GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Five Spartans recently represented UNC Greensboro and the Y.E.S. wrestling club by earning All-American status at the 2010 University Nationals and the 2010 FILA Junior Nationals.
This past weekend, Eric Chandler, Michael Gregory and Caylor Williams were named All-American in Greco-Roman at the 2010 FILA Junior Nationals, while Jamel Johnson was named All-American in freestyle at the event. By being named All-American, these wrestlers will now have the right to compete at the FILA Junior World Team Trials May 20-23.
Also recently, Williams and Johnson were named All-American in Greco-Roman at the University Nationals and Byron Sigmon also earned All-American status in freestyle. These wrestlers will have the right to compete at the University World Team Trials on May 20-23 as well.
By wrestling to fourth-place finishes at the FILA Junior Nationals, Chandler and Williams earned one full year of funded access to the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"Having guys place at both of these tournaments and earning funded access to the OTC is great for UNCG Wrestling,” said head coach Jason Loukides. “This is just another step in the right direction for our program. I am really happy for the guyps to be able to earn this All-American status and funded access. The kids that are coming to UNCG have Olympic aspirations and this is just the start of their Olympic journey."
Angel Garcia also competed at the FILA Junior Nationals, while Chandler, Ivan Lopouchanski, Travis Sheehy, Brett Miller, Marc Bryan, Peter Sturgeon and Mike Gregory competed at the University Nationals as well.
