SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Greensboro's Alex Emeterio has been tabbed the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, while her teammate Amber Harrell has been selected Pitcher of the Week for all games April 19-25. This marks the Harrell's second consecutive honor and third of the season. The selections are made by the league office.
A sophomore first baseman from Murrieta, Calif., Emeterio hit .600 over five games last week as the Spartans went 4-1, sweeping a doubleheader with North Carolina A&T and winning the series at league foe Furman. Four of her nine hits went for extra bases as she had three doubles and a home run to give her a 1.000 slugging percentage for the week. Emeterio tallied four RBI, scored six runs and registered an on-base percentage of .667. She hit safely in four of UNCG's five games, recording multiple hits in all four.
In the Spartans' 6-5 game one win against North Carolina A&T Emeterio was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. She came back in game two and went 2-for-3 while adding another double and a second RBI. Emeterio reached base four times in each game and scored three times.
In the first game at Furman, which stretched over two days due to rain, Emeterio went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a solo home run as UNCG won 5-0. She extended her hitting streak to a career-best nine games before failing to reach base in game two. Emeterio returned in the final game to hit 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
Harrell, a senior right-handed pitcher from McDonough, Ga., went 3-1 with a 0.70 ERA last week. Harrell struck out 28 batters while walking just nine in 20 innings of work. She allowed only two earned runs and 12 hits on the week as opponents hit .169 against her.
In the doubleheader against North Carolina A&T, Harrell picked up both wins. In game one she pitched one scoreless inning striking out two and allowing just one hit. She fanned 11 Aggies in the second game while permitting two hits and one earned run in six innings pitched. The Spartans won 9-1.
She earned her second shutout of the season at Furman as UNCG won the series opener 5-0. The game carried over to Sunday as rain forced play to end in the fourth inning Saturday. She held the Paladins to two hits and retired nine batters. Harrell took the loss in Furman's 4-3 win Sunday after pitching six innings. She tallied just one earned run while fanning six. Her first strikeout of the game gave her 600 for her career. After becoming the Spartans' career strikeout leader last week, she currently has 605 to her credit.
The Spartans return to action Tuesday when they travel to Charlotte to take on the 49ers.
Also receiving nominations for player of the week were College of Charleston's Kristie Shifflett, Elon's Tomeka Watson, Georgia Southern's Jenny Side and Western Carolina's Amber Steinhardt.
