BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State men and Western Carolina women won the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The title was the seventh for the Mountaineer men since 2000. The Catamount women claimed their sixth championship in program history and first since 2008.
On the men's side, ASU tallied 263.5 points to take the top spot, while Western Carolina notched 242 for second. Samford rounded out the top three with 132.5. The Catamount women finished with 221.5 points followed by the Mountaineers in second with 144. Elon's 123.5 points were good for third.
In Saturday's final event, Western Carolina senior Matt Evans claimed his second consecutive men's javelin title with a toss of 217-01 (66.18m). Elon junior Justine Robertson took the top podium spot for the women with a mark of 130-04 (39.74m).
Sunday began with the conclusion of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon.
Samford senior Chas Keithan took the men's decathlon title as the Bulldogs swept the final five events. Keithan tallied 6,355 points after taking first place in both the javelin and the 1,500m. He recorded a toss of 164-09 (50.22m) in the javelin and ran 4:19.14 in the 1,500m.
Teammate Bo Ackerson-Gilroy won the remaining events. In the 110m hurdles he posted a time of 15.76, while he registered a toss of 115-02 (35.11m) in the discus and a mark of 14-5.25 (4.40m) in the pole vault.
Georgia Southern senior Shaunta Hamilton won the women's heptathlon with 4,573 points. Hamilton took first place in the long jump with a leap of 18-2.50 (5.55m). Samford sophomore Christian McGuire finished first in the final two heptathlon events. She recorded a toss of 117-00 (35.66m) in the javelin and a time of 2:31.37 in the 800m.
Appalachian State snapped Western Carolina's five-year winning streak in the men's 4x100m with a first-place time of 40.50. Running for the Mountaineers were Justin Thomas, John Svoboda, Dennis Moore and Landon Powell.
The Western Carolina women claimed their fourth-consecutive title in the 4x100m and set a conference record with a time of 45.45. The Catamounts were led by Sherelle Fronberger, Felicia Paulding, Jane't Carothers and Felisha Garren.
In the men's 1500m, Appalachian State graduate student Brandon Hudgins earned the top podium spot with a time of 3:53.51. On the women's side defending champion Anneli Uys, a senior from Chattanooga, won her second title in the event recording a time of 4:29.92.
Malcolm Styers, a junior at Appalachian State, won his second event of the weekend with a 165-10 (50.54m) toss in the men's discus. He also took the top podium spot in the shot put with a toss of 55-8.5 (16.98m).
Elon senior Urysla Cotton was the top finisher in the women's shot put with a mark of 43-11.25 (13.39m). The Phoenix also claimed the top spot in the discus as sophomore Alyssa Girvin registered a toss of 145-2 (44.26m).
In the women's pole vault, freshman Laura Bedsole claimed the top podium spot with a mark of 11-5.75 (3.50m).
Claiming the title in the men's 110m hurdles was Western Carolina freshman Cordell Livingston with a time of 14.42. His teammate, sophomore Nicole Okolo, took the top spot in the women's 100m hurdles posting a time of 13.85.
The Citadel freshman Brunson Miller won the men's 400m dash posting a time of 47.25. Western Carolina junior Jane't Carothers repeated as the champion in the women's 400m dash with a time of 54.28.
Appalachian State freshman Landon Powell clinched the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.50. On the women's side, Western Carolina junior Felicia Paulding posted a time of 11.80 to win the event.
Powell and Paulding also claimed the top spots in the 200m dash in their respective events. Powell recorded a time of 21.51 while Paulding ran a 23.99.
In the men's triple jump, Western Carolina sophomore Cornelius Williams took the top podium spot with a leap of 48-4.75 (14.75m). On the women's side Appalachian State senior Danielle Thorpe claimed her third consecutive title with a leap of 43-2.25 (13.16m).
Drew Tucker, a junior at Western Carolina, took first place in the men's 800m with a time of 1:15.57. Chattanooga senior Anneli Uys, the defending champion in the 800m, won her second title in the event and second event of the day registering a time of 2:11.36.
The Catamounts swept the men's and women's 400m hurdles as senior Jestin Jennings posted a time of 54.26. Senior Tierra Johnson claimed her second consecutive title with a time of 1:02.39.
Appalachian State senior Phil Mitchell earned his second title, this time in the 5,000m with a time of 14:53.82. On the women's side Furman freshman Brooke Mosteller registered a time of 17:56.55 to take first place.
The Citadel men ended Western Carolina's five-year run in the 4x400m relay taking first place with a time of 3:15.97. The Catamount women clinched their third consecutive title in the 4x400m relay posting a time of 3:46.74.
