CofC Wins Women's Tennis Championship

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Top-seeded College of Charleston defeated third-seeded Furman 4-0 in the championship match of the 27th Annual Southern Conference Championships on Sunday morning at the tennis center at Patriots Point.

The win is the second consecutive Southern Conference tournament title for the Cougars who are 20-9 and earned the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

Due to impending weather, the match started with singles competition. Junior Kinsey Casey, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, topped Furman's Michele Stanford 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead.

After winning the first set 6-1, senior Laura Borza battled with sophomore Susan Bitetti in the second set before taking the set 6-3 and putting Charleston on top 2-0.Junior Emma Hayman increased the Cougars' lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over freshman Lauren Kline at the No. 2 spot.

CofC held a one-set advantage at No. 3 and 6.  Junior Keely Mulligan clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jennifer Betts at No. 6 for the Cougars. Furman's Monica Arguello edged senior Holly Dowse 7-5 in the first set at the top spot and Caroline Newman led Jessica Preeg 6-0, 5-4 at the third spot.

Furman ends its season 16-8 after playing in the championship match for the seventh straight year.
