ASU Leads Men, Women at Outdoor Championships

BOONE, N.C. - At the conclusion of day one of the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Appalachian State leads the men through six events with 70.5 points and the women have 43 through five events.

Samford is second on the men's side with 56.5 points, while Elon took No. 2 for the women with 36.5 points. Western Carolina rounds out the top three for both the men and women.

Saturday began with five events in the men's decathlon and four in the women's heptathlon.

Defending decathlon champion Sean Reardon, a senior at Western Carolina, currently leads the event with 3,423 points. He claimed the top spot in the 400m with a time of 50.14.

Appalachian State freshman Andrew Hill won three of the five events in the men's heptathlon. He won the 100m posting a time of 11.21, while taking the top spot in the long jump with a leap of 6.55m. Hill's toss of 11.98 in the shot put also took first place. Samford freshman Bo Ackerson-Gilroy registered a leap of 1.94m in the high jump.

Carlyn Wright, a junior at Western Carolina, took the top spot in the women's heptathlon 100m hurdles with a time of 14.57. Georgia Southern senior Shaunta Hamilton won the high jump of the women's heptathlon with a mark of 5-3.75 (1.62m). Hamilton also took the 200m dash with a time of 25.85. Samford sophomore Christian McGuire claimed the top spot in the shot put, recording a mark of 34-5.75 (10.51m)

Through four events, Lynndsey Hyter leads the women's heptathlon with 2,968 points.

Taking the top spot in the men's 10,000m was Appalachian State senior Phil Mitchell who posted a time of 31:32.42. On the women's side, Elon senior Caitlin Beeler registered a time of 37:27.42 to win the event.

Western Carolina senior Alex Dollard claimed the top spot in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-7.25 (7.19m). Georgia Southern senior Demetrise Anthony clinched her second consecutive long jump title with a leap of 19-4.25 (5.90m). It marks the sixth-straight year that the Eagles have taken the top spot in the event.

Malcolm Styers, a junior at Appalachian State, claimed first place in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 194-11 (59.41m). On the women's side, Western Carolina junior Zakiyyah Stewart took first place with a throw of 167-01 (50.92m).

Western Carolina senior Matt Evans won his fourth-straight high jump championship with a mark of 7-1.0 (2.16m), which ties the SoCon record set in 1984. Evans also becomes the first student-athlete since 1996 to claim the top spot in the event four consecutive years. For the women, Samford freshman Chenelle Terry took first place with a leap of 5-7.0 (1.70m).

Patrick Wells, a senior at Samford, clinched his second consecutive pole vault title with a mark of 16-10.75 (5.15m).

Samford teammates Cameron Bean and Hillary Neal led the Bulldogs to back-to-back sweeps of the men's and women's steeplechase. Bean posted a time of 9:10.00, while Neal claimed her second-straight steeplechase title registering a time of 10:42.61.

The last events of the day were the men's and women's javelin. Complete results will be available Sunday.

Several preliminaries were held Saturday. In the men's 110m hurdles, Western Carolina freshman Cordell Livingston qualified with a top time of 14.82. His teammate Nicole Okolo, a sophomore, took first in the prelims of the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 14.21.

The Citadel freshman Brunson Miller registered the top qualifying time in the men's 400m dash with a 47.83. Jane't Carothers, a junior at Western Carolina, was the top qualifier on the women's side with a time of 54.59.

In the men's 100m dash, freshman Landon Powell of Appalachian State posted a time of 10.68 en route to the top qualifying time. On the women's side Western Carolina junior Felicia Paulding posted a time of 11.85 to clinch the top spot.

Western Carolina junior Drew Tucker qualified first in the 800m preliminaries with a time of 1:52.47. For the women's side defending 800m champion Anneli Uys, a senior at Chattanooga, qualified first posting a time of 2:12.57.

The Catamounts' Cordell Livingston posted his second top qualifying time of the day, this time in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.44. Teammate Tierra Johnson, a senior, took the top spot on the women's side registering a time of 1:03.12.

Appalachian State sophomore Dennis Moore qualified first in the men's 200m preliminaries posting a time of 21.52. For the women Western Carolina Felicia Paulding earned her second top qualifying time of the day with a time of 24.08.

Sunday's events begin at 8 a.m. with the completion of the men's decathlon including the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. The women wrap up the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin and 800m.
