HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - In just its third year of competition and behind the strength of two top-four finishes, the Chattanooga women's golf team clinched its first Southern Conference title Tuesday at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The Lady Mocs fired 299 for the day and 902 for the tournament (+38), giving them an eight-stroke advantage over second place College of Charleston (+46).

Junior Emma de Groot shot an even-par 72 in round three to finish second (+4). Teammate Maria Juliana Loza, a sophomore, took fourth after firing a 76 on day three (+8). Both were named to the league's all-conference team.

Fellow Lady Mocs Christine Wolf, a junior, and Moa Duf, a sophomore, posted top-15 finishes.

UTC head coach Colette Murray was named the league's coach of the year.

Earning the league's individual medalist award was Appalachian State freshman Yue Xu who shot a 76 in the final round and finished at one over to take the top spot on the leader board by three strokes. Xu also picked up all-freshman team honors.

After heading into round three with the lead, College of Charleston finished second. Freshman Ainhoa Nogales led the Cougars and shot a four-over 76 to finish third overall at five over.

UNC Greensboro came in third (+54), eight strokes back of CofC. SoCon Freshman of the Year Courtney Taylor was the top Spartan and rounded out the top five at 10 over.

Coming in at No. 4 was Samford (+66), followed by Furman at No. 5 (+67). Junior Stefanie Kenoyer and freshman teammate Alexa Rancourt finished tied for sixth (+11) to lead the way for the Paladins. Kenoyer was honored as the league's golfer of the year.

Elon and Western Carolina finished tied for sixth with a 945 (+81). Following them was Appalachian State at eighth (946, +82), Wofford (963, +99) at ninth and The Citadel (1058, +194) at 10th. 

With the win, Chattanooga will advance to its second consecutive NCAA regional when it travels to Greenville, N.C., May 6-8 to compete in the East Regionals at the Ironwood Country Club.

The 2010 postseason awards were handed out following the conclusion of the tournament. Furman, Chattanooga and Western Carolina each had three players selected to the all-conference team, while College of Charleston, Elon, UNC Greensboro and Samford each had one.
