Furman's Arguello Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Furman's Monica Arguello has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches April 12-18 the league office announced Tuesday (April 20).  Arguello went 2-0 in both singles and doubles competition last week as the Paladins posted victories over Western Carolina (6-1) and Davidson (6-1).  The Player of the Week is awarded by the conference office.

Arguello ran her singles record to 15-6 this spring with the two victories last week.  She downed Western Carolina's Izabella Glinska, 6-1, 6-1 last Tuesday before defeating Davidson's Virginia Berry (7-5, 6-0) at No. 1 singles on Saturday. 

A native of Lakeland, Fla., Arguello paired with Lauren Kline at No. 1 doubles as the Paladins defeated Western Carolina's tandem of Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz and Carolina Lainez, 8-5.  Furman's top doubles team then defeated Davidson's Berry and Romina Clemente, 8-5.

With 15 victories, Arguello has the second highest win total at No. 1 singles in the conference this season.

The Paladins (15-7, 8-2 SoCon) earned the No. 3 seed in this weekend's Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship.  Furman will take on No. 2-seeded Samford Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Emma Hayman, Elon's Elisa Simonetti, Samford's Andrie Meiring and Western Carolina's Carolina Lainez.
