SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston third baseman Matt Leeds has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Elon’s Jimmy Reyes has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from April 12-18.

 

Leeds batted .556 (10-for-18) on the week with three home runs, three doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs. Leeds had at least two hits in all four games last week and reached the five-RBI plateau twice. In the midweek clash at USC Upstate, his three-run blast to straightaway center cleared the backdrop at approximately 440 feet, as he went 3-for-4 adding a single and a triple. During the week, Leeds drove in 13 of the Cougars’ 38 runs while slugging 1.333.

 

Reyes threw the first nine-inning complete game of his career, earning the shutout victory over Western Carolina on Friday evening. It was the first complete game shutout for Elon in four years, and it moved Reyes’ season record to 5-3. Against the Catamounts, the junior left-hander scattered three hits while fanning nine and walking just two. Elon took two of three games against WCU to improve to 11-7 in the SoCon this season.

 

Other hitters receiving consideration were Jeremy Dowdy (Appalachian State), Bryan Altman (The Citadel), Seth Freeman (Davidson), Mike Melillo (Elon), Eric Phillips (Georgia Southern), David Schulze (Samford), Ross Heffley (Western Carolina) and Kyle Behrendt (Wofford).

 

Other top performers among pitchers were Matt Andress (Appalachian State), David Peterson (College of Charleston), Asher Wojciechowski (The Citadel), Chris Lamb (Davidson), Dexter Bobo (Georgia Southern), Lex Rutledge (Samford) and Cash Collins (Wofford).
