SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Elon's Kaitlyn Piazzolla has been honored as the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, while UNC Greensboro's Amber Harrell has been named Pitcher of the Week for all games April 12-18. This marks the second time Harrell has won the award this season. The selections are made by the league office.
A sophomore catcher from South Bound Brook, N.J., Piazzolla hit .467 over five games, including four home runs. She registered a hit in four of Elon's five games as the Phoenix went 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Piazzolla tallied a team-best nine RBIs while slugging 1.333. In 15 appearances at the plate last week, she only struck out twice.
In Elon's 7-6 game two win at league foe Chattanooga, Piazzolla hit three round-trippers and brought in five runs. With the Phoenix trailing 5-3 in the seventh inning, she hit a grand slam that gave Elon a 7-5 lead en route to the victory. Elon handed the Lady Mocs their first two conference losses of the season.
Harrell, a senior right-handed pitcher from McDonough, Ga., went 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA in the Spartans' weekend series with Western Carolina. She fanned 15 batters in 12 innings of work while allowing just six hits and one earned run. The Catamounts hit .140 against her.
In the Spartans' 15-1 win in game one Harrell struck out nine batters. Coming into the contest she needed four strikeouts to set the school's career record, and Harrell retired four of the first five batters. She was three outs away from her first career no-hitter before allowing a single in the top of the fifth.
Her second win of the series and eighth of the season came Sunday as she fanned six batters and tallied just five hits. With Sunday's win, UNCG clinched its second consecutive series victory.
Both teams return to action Thursday as Elon hosts Charlotte and UNC Greensboro welcomes North Carolina A&T.
Also receiving nominations for player of the week were Appalachian State's McKenzie Phillips, College of Charleston's Katie Forbes, Furman's Katie Michaels, UNC Greensboro's Kaitlin Merkt, Samford's Kayla Shaffer and Chattanooga's Tiffany Baker.
