Samford 6, Appalachian State 1
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis was unable to keep pace with a very good Samford squad Saturday afternoon, as the Apps suffered a 6-1 loss to the Bulldogs. With the defeat, the Mountaineers end the 2010 campaign with a 9-13 record and 2-8 league mark, while the Bulldogs improve to 16-5 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
The match began on a tough note for ASU, as the Black and Gold lost in all three doubles matches.
At the three spot, Christina Calott saw match action for the first time this season, playing with Caroline Mauch, but the two lost 8-1.
Unfortunately, Ellie Linsell and Laura Janke were also unsuccessful at the number one slot, losing 8-3 to their opponents and Samford clinched the doubles point.
The duo of Jennifer Ansari and Gisela Fernandez posted a solid effort, but fell short dropping an 8-4 decision to Rebecca Kirven and Andrie Meiring at the two spot.
Things did not get much easier in singles action for Appalachian as the Mountaineers one just one match.
Janke was defeated in two sets at the five spot to Kirven, while Ansari was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Meiring.
Heather Prior lost at the six spot as well, falling 6-0, 6-0 to give Samford the match victory.
Both Fernandez and Mauch suffered losses at the four and three positions, while Linsell had the most impressive performance of the match, beating Morgan at the number one slot, winning 6-2, 3-6 and 13-11 in the tiebreaker.
Furman 6, Davidson 1
GREENVILLE, S.C -- Senior Jessica Preeg recorded wins in both singles and doubles in her final match at the Mickel Tennis Center to lead the Furman women's tennis team to a 6-1 win over Davidson Saturday afternoon in Greenville, S.C. Preeg teamed with junior Jennifer Betts to defeat Alison Rauh and Stephani Synn 8-7(6) in the second doubles match, then beat Rauh 6-0, 6-4 at number three singles.
The Paladins jumped out to an early lead by sweeping the doubles matches to win the doubles point. Junior Monica Arguello teamed with freshman Lauren Kline for an 8-5 win over Virginia Berry and Romina Clemente in the number one doubles match, while freshmen Olivia Maurice and Michele Stanford posted an 8-5 win over Ali Gores and Samantha Galainena in the third doubles match.
Furman won five out of the six singles matches, all in straight sets, for the team victory. Arguello beat Berry 7-5, 6-0 at number one singles, and Kline defeated Synn 7-6, 7-5 in the second singles match. Stanford posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Gores at number four singles, then Betts defeated Clemente 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth singles match.
The Wildcats' lone win came at number five singles, where Galainena recorded a 2-6, 6-4, (10-7) victory over Paladin sophomore Susan Bitetti.
Elon 6, Gardner-Webb 1
ELON, N.C. - The Elon women's tennis team won its 16th match of the season, breaking the school record for victories during the Division I era, with a 6-1 defeat of the visiting Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Senior Day at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. Elon (16-7) bid farewell to four impressive seniors as Anna Milian, Paige Kensrue, Laura Graybill and Hayley Wahl played their final collegiate matches. Gardner-Webb dropped to 12-11 with the loss.
Elon opened the match by winning the doubles point with victories at number one and number three. On court three, Graybill and Briana Berne won their first five games en route to an 8-1 victory over Ronia Hutterli and Tavenner Black. The point would come down to the result on court one after GWU's Rita Gouveia and Ioana Opera defeated Kensrue and Wahl, 8-3, at number two. On court one, Milian and teammate Elisa Simonetti played their final doubles match as partners, improving to 16-5 on the year with an 8-3 win over Erica White and Kasey Ellis.
In singles, Kensrue won her sixth consecutive match, dropping only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 result over Opera at number two. Graybill followed suit, finishing her career with 6-1, 6-3 decision over Hutterli at number five.
Gardner-Webb got its lone point of the match after White took a 6-2, 6-3 win over Milian on court one. Simonetti clinched the match for the Phoenix with her dominating 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Gouveia at number three. Wahl improved to 5-0 in her final season, claiming her last match with a 6-1, 6-4 result over Black at number six. Berne produced the final 6-1 score as she rallied for a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ellis on court four.
Elon's senior class will be greatly missed. Milian finished her collegiate tennis career as one of the most storied players at Elon. She amassed a 51-16 singles record and owns the best career winning percentage of any Phoenix women's tennis player during the Division I era. Kensrue had an outstanding senior season and career, putting together 15 wins in 2010, including a 9-1 conference mark. One of the most determined players on the squad, Graybill helped Elon advance to the semifinals of the 2008 SoCon Tournament with the match-clinching singles victory. Wahl earned 29 singles victories during her time in the maroon and gold.
Marshall 7, UNC Greensboro 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. - No. 57-ranked Marshall swept all six singles matches and two of the three doubles match on its way to a 7-0 win over UNC Greensboro in women's tennis action Saturday afternoon.
UNCG's lone victory of the day came in doubles action when Alex Whitehead and Mikayla Rogers topped Kristina Koppricina and Thaddea Lock, 8-6, at the third slot.
Annette Rios had her eight-match winning streak snapped when she dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Deanna Bailey at No. 5 singles. Rios, a freshman, finished the season at 23-8, including a 16-5 mark in the spring slate.
UNCG finished the season at 10-11 overall.
