Furman 6, Western Carolina 1
CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team picked up its seventh Southern Conference victory with a 6-1 win over Western Carolina Tuesday afternoon in Cullowhee, N.C. The Paladins won the doubles point and five out of six singles matches for the victory.
Furman jumped out to an early lead, winning the doubles point with victories at number one and number three doubles. Junior Monica Arguello teamed with freshman Lauren Kline for an 8-5 win over Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz and Carolina Lainez at number one, while freshmen Olivia Maurice and Michele Stanford defeated Izabella Glinska and Emily Turke 8-2 in the third doubles match. The Catamounts' Amanda Massey and K. Jimenez Sarmiento posted an 8-5 win over junior Jennifer Betts and freshman Brooke Mosteller in the second doubles match.
In singles competition, the Paladins picked up wins in five out of six matches, all in straight sets. Arguello defeated Glinska 6-1, 6-1 at number one singles, and Kline beat Massey 6-3, 6-3 at number two singles. Sophomore Susan Bitetti beat Iglesias Diaz 6-3, 6-4 in the number four singles match, while Betts recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jimenez Sarmiento in the fifth singles match-up. At number six singles, freshman Jenny Porter beat Turke 6-0, 6-3.
The Catamounts' lone point came off a win at number three singles, as Lainez defeated Stanford, 6-2, 6-0.
Furman (14-7, 7-2 SoCon) will close out the regular season Saturday, when the Paladins face Davidson at 1 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.
Chattanooga 7, Tennessee Wesleyan 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team cruised to a 7-0 win on "Senior Day" over Tennessee Wesleyan on the UTC Tennis Courts this afternoon. Seniors Beata Knizat and Kate Ksiezopolski went out in style by winning both of their singles and doubles matches.
With the victory, the Lady Mocs surpass their 2009 win total with a 9-12 overall record. UTC is 3-6 in Southern Conference action with their final match of the season on Friday at Davidson. TWC falls to 2-10 on the season.
"It is always good to win the last home match of the year," stated head coach Jeff Clark. "I was glad to send out seniors out on such a high note in front of a great crowd."
The Lady Mocs swept the doubles matches for their eighth doubles point in the last 10 duals. UTC only dropped four games in doubles play.
Sophomore Shaina Singh was first off the singles court. She posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kayla Foster at No. 2. She improved to 18-12 in singles play on the season.
Freshman Jenna Nurik scored her team-high 21st win of the year with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Karolina Pierko at No. 1. Knizat secured the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Meghan Whaley at No. 4.
With the contest decided, the Lady Mocs swept through the final three matches with wins from junior Annie Green at No. 4, Ksiezopolski at No. 5 and sophomore Brianna Wishing at No. 6. Chattanooga only dropped two games in the last three matches.
"It was a good day all around," added Clark. "We had nine matches to play and swept all of them. Everyone had the opportunity to play and they all pulled out wins."
