SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Samford's Taylor Morgan has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches April 5-11 the league office announced Tuesday (April 13). Morgan finished the week 2-0 in singles play and was 2-0 in doubles competition for the Bulldogs as Samford earned wins over Chattanooga (6-1) and Georgia Southern (7-0). The Player of the Week is awarded by the conference office.
A junior from Jacksonville, Fla., Morgan won two matches at No. 1 singles for Samford last week, posting a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Chattanooga's Jenna Nurik on Thursday. Morgan then topped Georgia Southen's Ali Beavers in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Teaming with Lindsey Mallory at No. 1 doubles, the Samford pair topped Chattanooga's Nurik and Shaina Singh, 8-3. Morgan and Mallory also recorded an 8-1 victory over Ashley Hungerford and Melanie Rolle of GSU.
Morgan is now 12-6 in singles play this spring and also boasts a 12-6 mark in doubles competition with Mallory. Morgan's 12 victories at No. 1 singles is tied for the third best mark in the conference this spring.
The Bulldogs (15-4, 7-1 SoCon) return to action Saturday (April 17) when they visit Appalachian State at noon.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State's Ellie Linsell, College of Charleston's Holly Dowse, Davidson's Samantha Galainena, Furman's Monica Arguello, Georgia Southern's Ashley Hungerford, Chattanooga's Emily Hangstefer and Western Carolina's Carolina Lainez.
