Elon 6, Wofford 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Elon women's tennis team rebounded after a tough loss at Furman on Saturday to earn a dominating 6-1 win over the Wofford Terriers in Southern Conference action at the Reeves Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix (14-7, 5-4) won the doubles point and took four singles matches in straight sets en route to the victory. Wofford dropped to 1-20 on the season and 0-9 in the league. Elon will play its final SoCon match of the year on Wednesday afternoon against local rival UNC Greensboro.
 
The doubles point came down to the number two match after the squads split matches on courts one and three. Lauren Sessoms and Paige Kensrue rebounded after being down 4-1 to earn the 8-5 defeat of Lucy Schemerhorn and Sonia Anand and clinch the point for Elon. The Phoenix's Briana Berne and Laura Graybill went unbeaten on the weekend, rolling to an 8-2 result against Lindsay Larkin and Stephanie Cox at number three
 
Elisa Simonetti quickly put the visitors on top 2-0, dropping only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Cox at number three singles. Graybill wasn't far behind with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Larkin on court five. At number two, Kensrue clinched Elon's fifth SoCon win of the year as the senior topped Guinn Garcia, 6-2, 6-3.
 
Berne battled back from a set down to earn the 6-7 (5), 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) result over Schermerhorn on court four.  Wofford's lone point came from Anand's 6-0, 6-2 win over Jessica Margolis on court six..


Furman 4, UNC Greensboro 3

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team won the doubles point and the top three singles matches to take a 4-3 win over UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.  The Paladins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Spartans won out in the bottom half of the singles lineup.

Furman junior Monica Arguello and freshman Lauren Kline defeated Valerie Behr and Stephanie Macfarlane 8-3 at number one doubles, and junior Jennifer Betts teamed with senior Jessica Preeg for an 8-5 win over Jessica Eblen and Annette Rios at number two doubles to give the Paladins the doubles point.  UNCG's Alex Whitehead and Mikayla Rogers beat freshmen Olivia Maurice and Michele Stanford 8-3 in the third doubles match.

In singles action, Arguello recorded a victory over Alex Whitehead at number one, after winning the first set 6-0, then taking the decision when Whitehead retired with the score tied 2-2 in the second set.  Kline easily defeated Macfarlane 6-0, 6-1 at number two, and Preeg beat Behr 6-1, 6-2 at number three singles to clinch the win for the Paladins.

The Spartans rallied for three wins in the remaining singles matches.  Rogers beat Stanford 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth singles match, and Rios defeated sophomore Susan Bitetti 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at number five singles.  Sasha Skripkina posted a 6-4, 2-6, (17-15) win over Betts in the sixth singles match.


Davidson 5, Appalachian State 2

BOONE, N.C. - Davidson capped off a busy week with its second win of the week by scoring a 5-2 Southern Conference victory over host Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon in women's tennis.

The Wildcats went 2-1 for the week as they pushed their overall record to 13-6 and their league mark to 5-2, remaining in the top-four of the SoCon standings. ASU fell to 9-12 overall and 2-7 in SoCon matches.

For the second time during the week, Davidson swept all three doubles matches to start things off and grab an early 1-0 lead in team points. The No. 1 team of Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang registered their 11th doubles win with an easy 8-1 decision.

Scoring their ninth and fifth overall wins together, respectively, was the No. 2 team of Stephani Synn and Alison Rauh, and the No. 3 team of Samantha Galainena and Ali Gores with 8-6 and 8-4 decisions.

Four of those six Wildcats then went on to capture singles wins to seal up the 5-2 league victory. Galainena led the way with her team-leading sixth straight win after a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Laura Lanke at No. 6. The junior, who was perfect for the week at 3-0 in singles play, is 13-5 overall and 5-2 in league matches.

Her partner, Gores, made it two straight over the weekend with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-2 triumph at No. 5, while Synn equaled Galainena for the team lead in wins after a straight set 6-3, 6-0 win over Caroline Mauch at No. 3.

Senior Wang earned the last team point for Davidson with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 2, her 10th overall on the season. She became the fourth Wildcat to reach double digits in singles wins this year.


Georgia
Southern 4, Chattanooga 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - After taking a 3-0 lead, the Chattanooga women's tennis team was unable to hold on Sunday afternoon, as the Lady Mocs fell to Georgia Southern 4-3.

UTC took the doubles point and got two-set wins at one and three, before dropping the other four singles matches. It is the fifth 4-3 loss for the Lady Mocs this spring.

With the win, Georgia Southern improves to 11-8 and 5-4 in the Southern Conference. Chattanooga drops to 8-12 and 3-6 in the conference.

In doubles play, Jenna Nurik and Shaina Singh defeated Ali Beavers and Allison Beaver by a comfortable 8-3 margin at No. 1 while Emily Hangstefer and Charlotte Bossy did the same at No. 2, winning 8-1.

In the singles portion of the match, the top half of the lineup continued to play well for the Lady Mocs. Hangstefer did not drop a game in her match with Natalie Maffett at three, and Nurik controlled play at No. 1, winning 6-2, 6-0. That left four singles still to play, and the match undecided.

Ashley Hungerford was the first to put the Eagles on the board, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Beata Knizat at No. 5. But the first point for Georgia Southern was quickly followed by two more. Charlotte Bossy fell 6-3, 6-2 then Shaina Singh was defeated after a comeback attempt in the second set, 6-2, 7-5.

Tied at three apiece, the No. 6 singles would decide the match. Annie Green and Jessica Fuller went back and forth in a long first set. Fuller eventually pulled out the tiebreaker, 7-2, to take the first set and the momentum. She went on to win the second set 6-2 and claim the match for Georgia Southern.
