Appalachian State - The Carolina's Cup
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Appalachian State women's track and field took home first-place finishes in 12 of 19 events en route to a dominating win at the Carolina's Cup on the campus of Winthrop University.
The Mountaineers tallied 246 points on the day to easily outdistance the host Winthop Eagles. Gardner-Webb registered 91 points to earn a third-place finish overall, and SoCon foe Davidson finished fourth with 48 points.
Senior Danielle Thorpe took home first place in the triple jump and long jump for the Mountaineers Friday. The Durham, N.C. native posted a career-best mark of 42-4 in the triple jump to out-distance teammate Bianca Harvey (2nd overall, 38-7.50). Thorpe's effort currently ranks 12th nationally. Thorpe also established a new season-best in the long jump with a mark of 19-1.50 to take the top spot, while Harvey earned another second-place finish with a personal-best mark of 19-0.
Senior Whitney Smyre claimed two first-place finishes for the Apps Friday. The Stony Point, N.C. native won the shot put with a personal-best toss of 43-11.25 that ranks fifth in ASU history. Smyre also took home top honors in the hammer throw with a 158-7 effort and added a second-place finish in the discus with a personal-best throw of 131-3, which ranks 10th in school history. Freshman Deanne Tiplady earned a first-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 109-11 and classmate Gayshawna Watkins added third place finishes in the hammer throw (147-8, season-best) and javelin (107-3.50, season-best).
Sophomore Christina Parker took home first and second place finishes in the sprints for the Mountaineers. The Rockingham, N.C. native posted a 25.56 in the 200m dash to claim first place overall, and established a new personal-best time of 12.19 in the 100m dash to earn a second place finish. Junior Nadia Liriano added a second-place finish in the 200m with a time of 26.16 to go along with a fifth-place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 12.70.
Freshman D'Shawrna McLucas led the Mountaineers in the 400m dash with a time of 59.59 to earn a third-place finish. Sophomore Linnea Howie and junior Michelle Brutus added fifth and sixth place finishes with times of 61.98 and 62.77, respectively.
Sophomore Asia Dunlap and freshman Trinity Foreman posted third and fourth place finishes in the 800m run for the Apps Friday. Dunlap's time of 2:19.51 marked the fastest 800m recorded by a Mountaineer this season, while Foreman's 2:20.79 was just .04 seconds off her season-best.
Foreman led a trio of Mountaineers in the 1500m run with a 4:46.97 time on her way to a first-place finish. Junior Dani Reese (2nd overall, 4:51.70), sophomore Kelsey Hanger (5th overall, 5:03.45) and senior Hannah Parks (6th overall, 5:05.28) posted strong showings in the 1500m as well.
Junior Amy Neilson established a new career-best mark of 10:17.59 to earn a second-place finish in the 3000m run. Neilson was followed closely by freshman Sarah Williamson, who posted a new season-best mark of 10:17.92 to take home third place.
Michelle Brutus and Kiara Crutchfield both established new season-best marks in the 100m hurdles Friday. Brutus earned a second-place finish with a time of 14.66, while Crutchfield turned in a career-best 14.91 to finish third overall.
Sophomore Stephanie Chapman moved into fourth place in school history in the 3000m steeplechase with a new personal-best time of 11:31.72 to take first place Friday. Classmate Hannah Orders followed just behind in second place with a career-best effort of 11:38.19 that ranks seventh in ASU history. Freshman Amanda Hamilton added a third-place finish with a time of 12:40.69.
In the relays, the 4x100m squad of Kiara Crutchfield, Lynda Hiller, Christina Parker and Danielle Thorpe claimed a first-place finish with a time of 48.61, while the 4x400 team of Lynda Hiller, Shenita Martin, Nadia Liriano and D'Shawrna McLucas earned a second-place finish with a time of 4:08.81.
The Mountaineers took the top-three spots in the high jump with junior Rebecca Hazeltine leading the way. Hazeltine cleared 5-5 to earn a first-place finish, while Charlotte Walsh and Bridgette Hills each cleared 5-3 to tie for second.
Ashley Beale also earned a first-place finish with an 11-5.75 mark in the pole vault, while freshman Meredith Wilson claimed fourth with a vault of 10-6.
Appalachian State women's track and field will be return to action next Friday, when they host the Appalachian Invitational in their final tune-up before the SoCon Outdoor Championships April 24-25.

For the day, the Mountaineers tallied 237 points to easily outdistance Winthrop, who registered 135.5 points. SoCon foe Davidson took home third place with 103 points, and Gardner-Webb finished fourth with 79.5 points.
ASU claimed four of the top-five spots in the 100m dash Friday with sophomore Dennis Moore leading the way. Moore posted a season-best time of 10.75 to earn a first-place finish for the Apps. Senior John Svoboda claimed second place with a 10.82, and freshmen TJ Lockard and Justin Thomas came in fourth and fifth with times of 10.92 and 10.93, respectively.
Junior Phillip Bush took home first place in the 200m dash after posting a season-best time of 21.75. Bush was joined in the top-five by Svoboda, who finished second with a new personal-best time of 21.80, Landon Powell, who set a new season-best mark of 21.91 en route to a third-place finish, and Thomas, who finished fourth with a season-best time of 21.92. Bush also earned a first-place finish in the long jump with a season-best leap of 22-2.50, while freshman DeSean Pearce (2nd overall, season-best 21-10), sophomore Darius Purcell (3rd overall, 21-0.50) and freshman Andrew Hill (4th overall, 20-2.50) posted strong showings as well.
Junior Nick Zeller earned a first-place finish for the Mountaineers in the 400m dash Friday. The Taylorsville, N.C. native posted a time of 49.39 to claim the top spot while freshman Tyler Combs finished third with a season-best time of 50.08.
Freshman Alex Taylor claimed the top spot in the 800m run with a new season-best time of 1:51.98, which marks the fastest 800m time by a Mountaineer this season. Taylor was followed closely by senior Brandon Hudgins, who posted a 1:52.50 to finish second and senior Josh Houser, who finished fifth with a time of 1:56.28. Sophomore Jay Weaver added a ninth-place finish with a time of 2:05.05.
In the 1500m, it was Houser who led the charge with a time of 3:58.86 to earn a first-place finish for the Apps. Senior Phil Mitchell, the reigning SoCon Track Athlete of the Month, followed closely behind in second place with a time of 4:00.28. Junior Andrew Yarchin finished third after posting a new personal-best time of 4:02.52.
Freshman Will Raby led four Mountaineers with top-eight finishes in the 3000m run. The Charlotte native posted a time of 8:40.93 to earn a third-place finish, while senior Michael Walker finished fourth with a time of 8:43.10. Freshmen Burk Staub and Michael Lilley finished sixth and eighth with times of 8:50.03 and 8:58.95, respectively.
Freshman Trey Jones was the top ASU finisher in the 110m hurdles with a season-best time of 14.78, which was good for third overall. Senior Matt Boruff finished fourth with a season-best time of 14.89, and sophomore AJ Dohanic added a fifth-place finish witha time of 15.12. Jones' time marked the fastest 110m hurdle effort by a Mountaineer this season. Dohanic also chipped in with a third-place finish in the 400m hurdles with a new personal-best mark of 55.39, while junior Sean Thompson finished fifth with a season-best mark of 56.35.
Freshman James Howard-Smith earned a second-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a season-best effort of 9:48.10.
The Apps swept both relay events Friday, with the 4x100m squad of Phillip Bush, Dennis Moore, Landon Powell and John Svoboda taking the top spot with a time of 41.05. The 4x400 team of Tyler Combs, Brandon Hudgins, Alex Taylor and Nick Zeller edged Winthrop's sqaud with a time of 3:20.55.
Darius Purcell took home second place in the high jump with a height of 6-6.75. The Fayetteville, N.C. native was joined in the top-five by senior Matt Boruff (4th overall, season-best 6-4.75) and freshmen Brad Triplett and Collin Reber (t-5th overall, 6-0.75). Boruff also claimed the top spot in the pole vault after posting a season-best mark of 15-9, while freshman Evan Sandling earned a fifth-place finish with a season-best vault of 13-5.25.
Junior Jerod Gardner earned first-place finishes in both the shot put and the discus for the Apps Friday. Gardner moved into fifth place in ASU history with a personal-best mark of 53-11.25 in the shot, and also set a new season-best mark of 154-5.50 in the discus. Classmate Malcolm Styers finished second in both events, posting marks of 53-1 in the shot and 150-5 in the discus. Sophomore Jared Stalling added a third place finish in the discus with a 149-5.50 and a fourth-place finish in the shot with a 46-9.25 toss. Styers also added a first-place finish in the hammer throw with a 183-9 effort, while junior Tim Daly and sophomore Zane Lail chipped in with second and third place finishes with throws of 169-3 and 139-4.50, respectively.
Andrew Hill finished second in the javelin with a 160-11.50 toss, while sophomore Caleb Poplin came in fourth with a 137-8 mark.
Appalachian State men's track and field will return to action next Friday in Boone, as they host the Appalachian Invitational in the final tune-up before the SoCon Outdoor Championships April 24-25.
Davidson - The Carolina's Cup
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Wildcat women's track and field team finished fourth as competition concluded at the Asics/Winthrop Carolina's Cup on the campus' Irwin Belk Track Friday.
Freshman Natalie Atabek finished fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:18.06, followed immediately by junior Heather Conarroe with a time of 10:18.41.
In the 800 meters, sophomore Jane Gay finished 11th in 2:31.99, ahead of freshman Caroline Gecker with a 12th-place time of 2:35.18. Gay also finished eighth in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:11.72, while junior Sarah Cline was fourth in the event with a time of 5:01.31.
Freshman Shelby Wagenseller was fourth in the 200 meters (27.75) and eighth in the 400 meters (1:04.36). Classmate Rosie Lewis placed fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.93 and was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.43. Freshman Cara Wilck placed fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:41.92.
The Wildcats continue their weekend of competition at the JCSU Invitational in Charlotte Saturday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Three runner-up finishes led the Davidson men's track & field team to a third-place finish in the Carolina's Cup hosted by Winthrop University Friday night at the Irwin Belk Track.
Appalachian State (237 points) won the quad meet, which also featured host Winthrop (second place, 135.5 points) and Gardner-Webb (fourth, 79.5). The Wildcats took third with 103 points.
Freshman Demetrios Pagonis ran the fifth-best 3000-meters in Davidson history, clocking a personal-best 8 minutes, 35.19 seconds en route to a second place finish.
Junior Jin-Han Justin Song and freshman Shane Lakes also earned second-place finishes. Song led four Wildcat entries in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.62. Melaku Teka (50.79) followed in fourth. Lakes' mark of 38 feet, 4 ¾ inches (11.70m) in the triple jump was good for second.
Sophomore Taylor Martin continued to impress in the 400-meter hurdles, almost shaving a full second off his personal-best set last week, with a time of 55.96 to place fourth and move up Davidson's top-10 performers list.
Martin, James Tolleson, Teka and Song combined for a Davidson top-10 performance in the 4x400-meter relsay, placing third in 3:20.92.
Junior Bryce Jones also placed fourth with a personal-best and Davidson top-10 performance in the pole vault. Jones topped 13-11 ½ (4.25m) and also led the Wildcats in the 100-meter dash in 11.10.
Juniors Peter Bruton and Charlie Schmitt led the 'Cats in the 800- (fourth, 1:54.88) and 1500-meter (fourth, 4:03.93) runs, respectively.
Davidson will compete again Saturday at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational in Charlotte.
College of Charleston - Johnson C. Smith University Invitational
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - College of Charleston women's track & field competed in the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational on Saturday as one last test before the Southern Conference Championships. CofC went head to head against athletes from 12 other schools, including Southern Conference member Georgia Southern.
Five members of Charleston's squad participated in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Kristen Wolfe (Midlothian, Va./James River) recorded the fastest time of any Cougar this season, crossing the finish line in 2:18.57 for fourth place. Senior Emily Nagle (Annapolis, Md./Richmond) finished four spots behind Wolfe with a time of 2:21.37, her fastest time at College of Charleston.
Sophomore Callen Powers (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) also recorded a personal record in the 800 meters, placing 10th with a time of 2:22.28. Sophomore Grace Loba (Orean, Va./Fauquier) and redshirt-freshman Tierney Willard (Midlothian, Va./NC State) rounded out the field for CofC with 17th and 19th place finishes, respectively.
Loba and Nagle came in seventh and eighth in the 1,500 meters with times of 4:56.88 and 4:58.27. Powers and Willard placed 14th and 15th and junior Kirstin Jenkins (Cheyenne, Wyo./Cheyenne Central) finished 22nd.
Southern Conference Track Athlete of the Month Jelain McArthur continued to perform well in the 100-meter hurdles, coming in fourth with a time of 14.17 seconds. Junior Isabel Boersma (Franklin, Tenn./Ravenwood) ran a season-best time of 15.12 seconds to finish eighth. Junior Mary Zolga (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.18 for second-place finish while junior Saskia Kalmeijer (Brussels, Belgium/Pope) recorded a personal-best time of 1:07.39 to place fifth.
Boersma, Zolga, Kalmeijer and McArthur teamed up run a season-best time of 48.92 in the 4x100 meter relay to come in sixth.
On the men's side, senior Tim Faugl (Aiken, S.C./South Aiken) finished his collegiate career on a high note with a new school record in the 800 meters. His time of 1:57.94 placed him 14th and broke his old school record by just over two seconds.
Classmate David Thomas (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Academic Magnet) also broke his own school record in his final meet as a Cougar. Thomas shaved 10 full seconds off school record in the 1,500 meters, which he set on the same weekend last year at Furman. His new time of 4:04.00 put him seventh place.
The Cougars claimed the top three spots in the men's 5,000 meters.Junior Trevor Sprague (Dunwoody, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) won the event with a time of 15:25.52 while sophomore Eric Robertson (Dalzell, S.C./Thomas Sumter Academy) finished second in 15:41.08. Coming in third was sophomore David Lamberson (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge), who crossed the finish line 10 seconds behind Robertson.
Freshman Manning Miller (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) became the first male to compete in a field event in CofC history when he competed in the javelin at the Invitational. Miller launched the javelin a distance of 66'0" to finish ninth.
College of Charleston takes the next two weeks to prepare for the Southern Conference Championships on Apr. 24-25 in Boone, N.C.
Georgia Southern - Johnson C. Smith University Invitational
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Georgia Southern 4X100 Relay team took first-place at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational Saturday, April 10, while senior Shaunta Hamilton (Macon, Ga.) won the Triple Jump and Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) the Javelin for the Eagles. Senior Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.), Jasmine Billings (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Morgan Jefferson ( Villa Rica, Ga.) and Courtney Ware (Indianapolis, Ind.) ran in the team's 47.93 relay performance. Robillard had her best attempt in her third throw at 28.62 meters (93-11). Hamilton 's 12.21-meter (40-00.75, 0.8) mark in the Triple Jump will rank second in the Southern Conference.
A time of 12.17 for Anthony put her second among the competitors in the 100 meter dash. Ebony Carter (Rome, Ga.) was 12th in the event with her time of 12.67. Carter placed 11th in the 200 meter dash (26.02) with Billings at 13th with her time of 26.33. Billings had a top-five finish in the 100 meter Hurdles (14.49), which will also place her among the top five in the SoCon rankings in this event. Hamilton tied for 10th at 15.31.
Carter also ran the first leg of the 4X400 meter Relay with JoAnn Benson-Jaja (Savannah, Ga.), Jefferson and Ware. The team placed fifth with a time of 3:54.60. Benson-Jaja and Jefferson also competed in the 400 meter Dash with Benson-Jaja recording a time of 58.51 for 10th place. Jefferson finished 13th with a time of 58.97. Ware, a member of both relay teams, placed 10th in the 400 meter Hurdles, just .12 seconds off ninth place. Millicent Brooks-Millender (Douglasville, Ga.) was 14th in the same event with a time of 1:12.82.
In the Long Jump, five Eagles placed in the top 10 with Lynndsey Hyter (Dallas, Texas) leading the way with her 5.71 distance and second-place finish (18-09, 0.3). Hamilton was third at 5.47m (17-11.50) and Anthony fourth with a 5.43 distance (17-9.75, 0-7). Brooks-Millender tied for seventh at 5.12 meters (16-09.75, -0.3).
Georgia Southern was also well represented in the Shot Put where Ashley Thomas (Lawrenceville, Ga.) finished second with her best throw of the season at 12.43 m (40-09.50). Charnelle Wray (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Hyter finished ninth and 12th with throws of 10.49 m (34-05) and 10.10 m (33-01.75), respectively. Thomas finished fifth behind Amanda Spivy (Lawrencevile, Ga.), who captured second, in the Discus. Spivy's second throw was her best at 39.84 meters (130-08) with Thomas recording her best throw of the day in the second of her three good attempts (33.55m, 110-01).
Senior Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) earned two top-10 finishes in Charlotte with a time of 2:20.64 in the 800 m Run for sixth-place and a 4:59.12 mark for 10th in the 1500 m Run. Fuller lead the Eagles in both the 800 and 1500 meter events. In the 1500 meter Run, Sara Curry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was nudged out of 11th place by .11 seconds and finished 12th at 4:59.51. Leah Bradley (McDonough, Ga.) was 19th a 5:18.17. In the 800 meter Run, Robillard was behind Fuller in seventh place with a time of 2:21.26.
The 5000 meter Run also saw three Eagles place in the top 10 with Brittani Martin (Alpharetta, Ga.) taking 16 seconds off her previous best time for sixth place (19:05.52). Heather McAllister (Cartersville, Ga.) was eighth (19:54.94) and Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) ninth (20:19.71).
Sophomore Alex Cassagnol (Augusta, Ga.) posted a height of 1.62 m (5-03.75) in the High Jump for fourth place. Hamilton had an eighth-place finish in the Javelin behind Robillard (21.31 m, 69-11).
Elon - Lou Onesty Invitational & Sea Ray Relays
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Justine Robertson shattered the Elon record in the discus throw with a toss of 145-8 as the Elon track and field team wrapped up competition at the Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The heave, which was good enough for fifth place, bested the previous record, set in 2005 by Angela Carlberg, by over six feet.
Veronica Day took home Elon's only title of the meet with a first-place and school-record tying leap of 18-10.50 in the long jump. She went on to finish third in the triple jump with a mark of 38-7.50.
Alyssa Girvin finished just behind Robertson in the discus throw with a sixth-place finish and a distance of 137-9.
Robertson also had a good outing in the shot put, earning a seventh-place finish with a personal best mark of 43-3. Urysla Cotton notched a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 43-3.
Emily Tryon and Katy Burns each had a strong showing in the 3,000-meter run. Tryon was the runner-up in the event, crossing the finish line in 10:30.14, while Burns finished fourth with a time of 10:37.32.
Jennine Strange placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.55.
Courtney Whalen and Amy Salek rounded out the individual top-five finishes for the Phoenix. Whalen clocked a 4:44.62 in the 1,500-meter run to finish fifth, while Salek crossed the finish line in 57.52 seconds in the 400-meter dash to earn a fifth-place finish.
Dana Cataldo ran a 12.76 in the 100-meter dash, which was good for seventh place. She went on to earn an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.84 seconds.
Amanda Rice and Andrea March were Elon's top finishers in the hurdle events. Rice clocked a 15.95 in the 100-meter hurdles, which placed her eighth, while March crossed the 400-meter hurdles finish line in ninth place with a time of 1:05.47.
The 4x100-meter relay team, made up of Sarah Skogen, Cataldo, Day and Brittany Wilkins, finished third with a time of 48.71 seconds.
Melissa Turowski, Day, Strange and Salek made up the 4x400-meter relay team that finished fifth with a time of 4:00.23.
Elon will return to the track next weekend when it competes in North Carolina A&T's Friendship and Freedom Games in Greensboro, N.C.
ELON, N.C. - Emily Fournier and Justine Robertson each broke an Elon record at their respective track meets on Friday afternoon.
Fournier broke her own school record in the 3,000-meter run at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. with a sixth-place time of 10:07.50. The time was just over three seconds faster than the previous record, which she set last season.
Robertson's school record came in the javelin throw at the Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. Her mark of 125-9 bested the previous distance by over two feet and earned her a third-place finish.
Alyssa Girvin and Clara Martin each competed in the hammer throw, tossing a 122-6 and 114-2, respectively.
Courtney Weathers rounded out competition at the Lou Onesty Invitational with a height of 5-1.25 in the high jump.
Caitlin Beeler was the only other Phoenix trackster to compete on Friday at the Sea Rays Relay. She finished with a time of 17:39.08, good enough for fifth place, in the 5,000-meter run.
The team will be back in action tomorrow at the Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
Chattanooga - Sea Ray Relays
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's women's 4x1500 meter relay team took second in the Sea Ray Relays at the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium while several personal records fell over the weekend.
Senior Anneli Uys anchored the runner up team of classmate Tara Gietema and freshmen Mary Cumbee and Heather Stuive to a 19:16.87 finish behind Middle Tennessee.
Uys placed third in the 1500 meter run with a personal record time of 4:26.73. Junior Emmanuel Kirwa (Kapsabet, Kenya), running in his first outdoor meet, finished third in the 3000 meter Steeplechase Open event with a time of 9:19.11. His time was just less than seven seconds off the pace set by Alabama's Andrew Kirwa, also of Kapsabet, Kenya. The two are not directly related.
Cumbee and freshman Amanda Sumner improved upon their best times set earlier this season in the 1500 meter run. Cumbee finished the race in a time of 4:48.15, shaving more than a second off her best time set at the Yellow Jacket Invitational just two weeks ago while Sumner took more than four seconds off her time from the same meet.
Freshman Lucas Cotter was the fifth Chattanooga runner to improve his time from earlier this season. He ran the 1500 meter unseeded run in a time of 4:00.51, 1.32 seconds better than his PR from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational.
The Mocs will gear up for the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by the Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. The event will be held April 24 and 25.
Furman - Furman Invitational
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Sophomore Lee Gilmer set a new Furman record with a time of 4:04.40 in the Blue Shoes Elite Mile, which was held Saturday in conjunction with the 12th annual Furman Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track and Field and Kelsey-West Track in Greenville, S.C.
Derek Scott won the Blue Shoes Elite Mile event, turning in a time of 4:02.30, coming in just shy of the sub-four minute mile mark.
Five Paladin athletes turned in first-place finishes in the meet, including freshman Scott Des Marais, who won the shot put with a throw of 12.10m and the discus event with a mark of 40.16. Sophomore Brian Toney won the high jump with a mark of 6-4 to round out the field event winners. Junior Charlie McGoogan led the men's runners with a time of 15:12.75 for a win in the 5,000m.
For the women's team, sophomore Brooke Mosteller, who is also a member of the Paladin women's tennis team, set a new meet record with a first-place time of 17:43.16 in the 5,000m, and junior Monique Ositelu won the 800m with a time of 2:15.00.
Several meet records were set at the event. Besides Mosteller's record, USC Upstate's Camille Masanotti tied the pole vault record with a mark of 10-6. In the high school boys events, Carolina's Shacorey Jeter set new records in the 100m (10.99) and 200m (21.99). Aaron Ramerez of Woodmont broke the 1600m record with a time of 4:23.06, and Greenville's Calvin Bultz tied the pole vault record of 13-0. The Greenville 4x100m relay team set a new record with a time of 43.61, while Riverside's 4x800m relay team established a new record at 8:18.59.
For the high school girl's events, Riverside athlete Mary-Esther Gourdin broke her previous record with a mark of 37-1 in the triple jump and tied the long jump record of 17-3. Greenville's Sandi Morris set new records in the 100m Hurdles (14.94) and pole vault (12-0). Mauldin's 4x800m relay time of 9:49.09 also established a new meet record.
The Furman track and field teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championships on April 24 in Boone, N.C.
Wofford - Furman Invitational
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Wofford men's and women's track teams competed at the 2010 Furman Invitational, setting two new school records and earning 10 top-three finishes.
Senior Elias Conits paced the men's team with two first-place finishes. Conits recorded a time of 11.17 to finish first in the 100 meter dash and claimed the first-place spot in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.62.
Sophomore Joe Bailey also established a school record in the high jump, placing third with a jump of 1.84 meters.
Freshman Trey Parker and junior Andy Vess also earned top-three finishes for the Terriers. Parker turned in a time of 4:08.37 in the 1500 meter run to finish second in the event and Vess finished second in the javelin with a throw of 52.14 meters.
On the women's side, freshman Andrea Kelsey set a new school and freshman record in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:33.89, beating her previous record by more than 25 seconds.
Fellow freshman Shelby Harris also established a new school and freshman record, recording a time of 18:33.90 in the 5000 meter run.
The Terriers will close the outdoor season April 24-25 at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track Championship, hosted by Appalachian State University.
UNC Greensboro - Carolina Fast Times
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Three runners on the women's team set new personal-best times to lead UNC Greensboro at the Carolina Fast Times on Saturday evening.
Michelle Chewens set a new personal-best in the 800 meters by almost a second with a time of 2:20.77. Her time set a new time as the fourth-fastest in that event in school history.
Shaina and Chelsea Sumney also set personal-best times in the 1500 meters. Shaina's time of 4:47.37 was almost two seconds ahead of her previous personal-best and set the fourth-best time in school history. Chelsea's time of 4:54.63 was over seven seconds better than her personal-best.
On the men's side, TJ Wyatt set a new personal-best in the 800 meters for the second-straight week. His time of 1:52.37 was good enough for sixth place on the day. The time also broke his previous mark by .45 seconds to set the new second-best time in school history.
Andy Clyne also had a nice day as he nearly broke his personal-best in the 1,500 meters as he finished just .37 off his mark with a time of 3:57.62.
The Spartans will return to the track on April 24 as UNCG begins the 2010 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Boone, N.C.
Samford - Ole Miss Invitational
OXFORD, Miss. - Hillary Neal and Kyle Kirby highlighted Samford's action in the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday with school records in their respective events. Neal ran a time of 2:09.30 to win the women's 800 meters to pass the record she set as a freshman by eight-tenths of a second. Kirby broke his school record in the hammer throw for the third time this outdoor season with a toss of 175-00 to take ninth place in the event.
Kirby also took 24th place in the men's discus with a toss of 128-06 while Luke Davis posted a personal best of 112-09 to finish in 26th place. Also in the hammer throw, Chris Davis placed 17th with a toss of 132-03.
Holly Benson finished just behind Neal in the 800 meters with a personal best of 2:13.89 while Ashley Bridenbaugh grabbed 28th place with a personal best of 2:25.81. Elyse Rippe took 32nd place with a time of 2:27.44. Rippe also placed 41st in the long jump with a mark of 15-04.00.
Andrea Seccafien ran a personal best of 17:49.26 in the steeplechase to take third place. Deanna Zidar took 14th place with a personal best of 19:00.69 while Lauren Pilcher placed 17th with a time of 19:19.66 and Lillie Jackson placed 26th with a time of 20:10.56.
Lauren D'Alessio took third place in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:40.97. Alli Keithan (5:00.99) and Madison Davis (5:6.47) ran personal bests in the event to finish 23rd and 38th, respectively.
Christi Gaskill took 10th place in the steeplechase with a personal best of 12:12.27 on her first time running the event.
In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Christian McGuire and Julie McDonald took 26th and 27th places, respectively, with times of 16.14 and 16.15. Emily Allen placed 35th with a time of 17.23. In the 400-meter hurdles, Morgan Tyler came in 10th with a time of 1:02.83.
Ashley Dance placed 23rd in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 57.89. Dance also placed 40th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 25.89 while Tatum Moffett (26.33), McDonald (26.47), Leslie Graf (26.91) and Allen (26.99) all ran personal bests in the event.
Cameron Bean finished just three seconds shy of his third consecutive school record as he ran 14:47.44 to take second place in the men's 5000 meters.
Blaise Carie placed fourth in the men's 1500 meters with a time of 3:56.75 while Ramsey White took 20th place with a personal best of 4:02.44 and Dan Hall took 40th place with a personal best of 4:21.97.
In the men's 800 meters, Scott Cope took fifth place with a personal best of 1:53.24 while White ran a personal best of 1:56.55 to take 19th place. Will Denton grabbed 20th place with a time of 1:56.67.
Donald Cooper took 21st place in the 100-meter dash with a personal best of 11.03 while Bobby Ellison took 41st place with a time of 11.56. Cavan Corcoran ran a time of 15.11 to take sixth place in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Cooper also took 14th in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best of 55.13 followed by Corcoran in 15th place with a personal best of 55.55. Chas Keithan also placed 20th with a personal best of 56.21.
Zac Cordner placed 45th in the 200-meter dash with a personal best of 22.72.
In the women's field events, Chenelle Terry took fifth place in the women's high jump with a height of 5:03.25 while Allen placed 18th in the triple jump with a personal best of 36-00.00.
Jessica Lucas placed 16th in the women's javelin with a toss of 113-01 and 26th in the hammer throw with a mark of 111-06.
Laura Bedsole took ninth in the women's pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75 while Mary Barron tied for 10th with a mark of 10-11.75.
In the men's field events, Michael Seaman and Patrick Wells took second and third places, respectively in the pole vault. Seaman tied a personal best of 16-06.75 while Wells posted the same mark. Ryan Cook placed seventh in the event with a personal best of 15-05.00 while Ackerson-Gilroy tied for 11th place with five other competitors with a personal best of 14-11.00. Zac Epperson and Chas Keithan landed in a six-way tie for 17th place with a mark of 14-05.25 which was a personal best for Keithan. Brandon Bassett came in 23rd with a mark of 13-11.25.
In the men's javelin, Ryland Robbins took sixth place with a personal best of 180-05 while Ackerson-Gilroy tied his personal best of 168-08 to finish in 10th place. Keithan took 11th place with a toss of 166-00 while Bassett rounded out the Samford field with a personal best of 152-11 to take 16th place.
Bassett and Ackerson-Gilroy also placed 17th and 19th, respectively, in the long jump. Bassett posted a personal best of 21-04.25 while Ackerson-Gilroy recorded a mark of 20-10.00.
The Samford women finished 12th in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.57 while the Samford men took 12th with a time of 42.99. The women took ninth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:52.82 while the men also took ninth in the event with a time of 3:18.79.
Next Saturday, April 17, the Samford track and field team will compete in its final meet before the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships that will be held in Boone, N.C., April 23-24. The Bulldogs will head back to Auburn for the Auburn Invitational.
