UNC Greensboro 7, Wofford 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team lost its match with Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon 7-0. Before the match Wofford honored its lone senior co-captain Sabrina Smyers in a pre match ceremony. The loss drops the Terrier record to 1-19 and 0-8 in the Southern Conference. The Spartans improve to 10-8 on the year and 4-4 in the Southern Conference.
Greensboro took an early lead by winning all three doubles points to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. In doubles play Wofford was led by Guinn Garcia and Haley Baird who lost a hard fought number one doubles match to Valerie Behr and Stephanie Macfarlane. The back and forth match was tied at seven to force a decisive tie break. Behr and Macfarlane pulled out a tough 8-6 victory in the tie break to win the match 8-7.
In singles play UNC Greensboro swept all the singles matches on their way to a 7-0 victory. The Terriers were led by Haley Baird and Sonia Anand. Baird won the first set of her number two singles match against Stephanie Macfarlane 6-4 but Macfarlane battled back to tie the match, winning the second set 6-0. The final set was decided over a ten point tie break which Macfarlane won 10-7.
Sonia Anand was locked in a grueling three set battle with Sasha Skripkina at number six singles. Anand won the first set 6-4 but Skripkina came back to win the second set 7-6 with a 7-4 tie break victory. The final set was again decided over a ten point tie break which Skripkina won 10-7.
Furman 4, Elon 3
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- With the score tied at 3-3, Paladin junior Monica Arguello defeated Anna Milian 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4 in the number one singles match to lead the Furman women's tennis team to a 4-3 win over Elon Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead after taking the doubles point. Milian and Elisa Simonetti defeated Arguello and freshman Lauren Kline 8-5 at number one, but Furman junior Jennifer Betts and senior Jessica Preeg posted an 8-3 win over Paige Kensrue and Lauren Sessoms at second doubles to set up a deciding third doubles match. Elon's Briana Berne and Laura Graybill combined for a close 8-6 win over freshmen Olivia Maurice and Michele Stanford in the match for the point.
In singles action, Furman tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win by Betts at number six before Elon recorded wins at number two and three singles to take a 3-1 lead. Kensru defeated Kline 6-2, 6-2 at number two singles, and Simonetti beat Preeg 7-5, 6-2 at number three singles.
With the match on the line, Paladin sophomore Susan Bitetti rallied for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Sessoms in the fifth singles match before Stanford tied the match by defeating Berne 7-6(4), 6-2 at number four singles to set up Arguello's match-securing victory.
Samford 7, Georgia Southern 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- On a day in which lone senior women's tennis player Stephanie Parkison was honored in Samford's home finale, the Bulldogs' native of Clarkston, Mich., proved to be victorious in both doubles and singles play as Samford breezed to a 7-0 Southern Conference win against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Senior Day.
With the shutout victory, Samford (15-5, 7-1 SoCon) extended its season-best winning streak to seven-consecutive matches and closed out its 2010 home schedule with a stellar 11-2 record. The Bulldogs ended their home slate with six straight victories at the Samford Tennis Center.
In the Bulldogs' dominant win Saturday, Samford swept all three doubles matches and cruised to straight-set triumphs in all six singles contests. The Bulldogs received singles victories from Taylor Morgan, Andrie Meiring, Madelie Janse van Rensburg, Parkison, Rebecca Kirven and Lindsey Mallory.
Mallory, Samford's fiery sophomore from Louisville, Ky., tallied her seventh-consecutive win in singles play and improved her record to 14-5 this season. She is 11-2 while playing on court No. 6 and has not been defeated since March 16.
Fellow sophomore Kirven was also victorious in both singles and doubles play Saturday. With her 7-5, 6-3 win against Georgia Southern's (10-8, 4-4 SoCon) Ashley Hungerford in the No. 5 singles match; she improved her team-best record on the season to 15-4.
Appalachian State 6, Western Carolina 1
BOONE, N.C. - Western Carolina dropped its match, 6-1, to rival Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Carolina Lainez picked up the lone win in singles action as the Mountaineers (9-11, 2-6 SoCon) snapped the Catamounts' (3-12, 1-7 SoCon) win streak in conference action.
ASU won the doubles point as Ellie Linsell and Olivia Stannard downed Amanda Massey and Layne Arnold, 8-1. WCU bounced back in the three spot for doubles as Emily Turke/Izabella Glinska defeated Jennifer Ansari/Carolina Mauch, 8-2. The win for Turke/Glinska was the second consecutive victory in doubles action for the duo.
In the number two doubles match, it was ASU's Laura Janke/Gisela Fernandez winning, 8-6, over Western's Lainez/Karen Jiménez Sarmiento.
Lainez claimed the lone WCU point and captured her second consecutive win by defeating Mauch, 6-1, 6-1 in the three spot. Massey, a senior for the Catamounts, battled in three sets, but fell, 1-6, 6-4, 7-10 to Ansari. In the top spot, Glinska was downed 0-6, 2-6, by Linsell.
Jiménez Sarmiento's three-match win streak was snapped by Appalachian State's Fernandez, 2-6, 3-6. Arnold dropped her match to Blakeley Bean, 3-6, 2-6, while Turke fell in straight-sets, 3-6, 0-6, to Heather Prior.
East Carolina 4, Davidson 3
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The doubles point proved to be the difference in a non-conference women's tennis battle between Davidson and East Carolina with the Pirates sweeping all three doubles matches to send the Wildcats to a 4-3 defeat on Saturday morning ECU Tennis Complex.
Davidson saw its four-match win streak come to an end as it fell to 12-6 overall. ECU ran its spring record to 15-7.
The Wildcats, coming off a 4-3 league win on Tuesday at Elon, could not duplicate their success in doubles as they did against the Phoenix when they swept all three matches. The Pirates took all three matches to grab the early 1-0 lead in team points, but the 'Cats did not go down without a fight. All three matches went an extra game and the No. 2 doubles team of Alison Rauh and Stephani Synn forced a tiebreaker to determine the winner.
Singles play was split down the middle with each team taking three of the six matches. Senior Virginia Berry got back on the winning side with her 11th singles win, a three-setter (6-4, 1-6, 7-6) against Jessica Cook at No. 1.
Fellow senior Ali Gores halted a personal four-math losing streak with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 for her seventh win of the season. It was also the senior¹s first win at the position.
Getting the Wildcats' third point was Samantha Galainena at No. 6. The junior ran her singles win streak to five straight, currently a team-best, with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Abby Richmond to improve to 12-5 on the season. She is tied with Synn for the team lead in wins.
Synn saw her win streak snapped at five after a 7-5, 6-4 defeat at No. 3 and Teresa Wang also battled to the end in her match vs. Petra Vogel at No. 2. Wang forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second set, but came up short in the final set at 6-4 after also dropping the first set, 6-4. Wang along with Rauh, who dropped a 6-1, 7-6 decision at No. 4, are both just one win away from reaching the 10-win plateau on the year.
Davidson wraps up the weekend with a trip to Boone, N.C. to face Appalachian State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Chattanooga 5, Mercer 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team grabbed a 5-2 win over Mercer on the UTC Tennis Courts today. The Lady Mocs won the doubles point and four singles matches on their way to the non-conference win. UTC is now 8-11 on the year while Mercer falls to 7-10 overall.
Junior Annie Green and senior Beata Knizat opened the day with an 8-5 win over Stephanie Cohen and Sarah Hanna at No. 3. Green and Knizat improved to 8-1 in doubles play on the year. Chattanooga closed out the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 2 by sophomores Charlotte Bossy and Emily Hangstefer.
Freshman Jenna Nurik pushed the lead to 2-0 when Jennifer Lada retired in the second set of the No. 1 match. Nurik leads the team with a 19-8 singles record at No. 1.
Hangstefer was next off the court with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Amalia Bugge at No. 3. It was her 15th singles win of the season. Sophomore Shaina Singh closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Anna Weislander at No. 2. She is now 17-11 in singles play on the season.
Bossy also posted a win today. She defeated Cohen 6-5, 7-5 at No. 5 for her eighth win of the season.
The Lady Mocs return to Southern Conference action on Sunday when they host Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon.
