UNC Greensboro 4, Elon 3
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Yaroslav Litus topped Alberto Rojas at No. 4 singles to break a 3-3 tie and lift UNC Greensboro past rival Elon, 4-3, in Southern Conference men's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Spartans (12-3, 4-0) defeated the Phoenix for the first time since 2005 and remained unbeaten at home this season. The Spartans are 9-0 at UNCG Tennis Courts this season and have now won 12 straight dating back to last season.
After Elon won a closely contested doubles point, the Spartans won four of the six singles matches to rally for the win. Timion Meijs, Arsel Kumdereli and Orcun Seyrek all won singles matches in straight sets. For Seyrek, it was his 13th straight win in singles play. Seyrek raised his mark to 22-4 overall this year, while Meijs won his 20th match of the year and moved his record to 20-6.
But it was Litus' win over Rojas that closed out the win. Litus won the opening set by a 6-1 score, but Rojas followed with a 6-2 win in the second set. Litus, a junior from Orel, Russia, closed out the match with a 6-2 win in the third to run his mark to 16-8 overall on the year.
College of Charleston 7, The Citadel 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The nationally ranked College of Charleston (13-3, 7-0) men's tennis team posted a dominating 7-0 victory over cross-town rival The Citadel (5-10, 2-4) in a Southern Conference men's tennis match at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Wednesday, March 31.
The Cougars charged out of the gate as the pairing of sophomore John Harden and freshman Kyle Parker opened with an impressive 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles before sophomore Mickael Trintignac and junior Mickael Boyer gave CofC the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 3. Junior Lukas Koncilia and sophomore Tom Delme rounded out the sweep with an 8-4 decision at the top spot.
In singles, competition, Boyer wasted no time as he handled the Bulldogs Josh Cook by scores of 6-1, 6-2 to be the first one off the courts while doubles partner Mickael Trintignac also notched a 6-1, 6-2 decision as he defeated Alberto Diaz in short order at No. 2. Delme sealed the match with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of David Orces at No. 3 while Harden delivered a 6-1, 6-4 win at the sixth position to make it 5-0.
Koncilia and Parker each went three sets to earn their victories, with Koncilia downing Yufo Sutantio 3-6, 6-3, 10-1 at the first position. Parker earned his first singles victory in dual competition with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Derek Dickey to round out the match.
The Cougars continue to solidify their place atop the Southern Conference standings as they have now won their first seven league matches. UNC Greensboro and Furman also remain undefeated with matches yet to be played against CofC.
Davidson 7, Wofford 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team fell to Southern Conference rival Davidson 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The loss drops the Terriers to 7-9 on the year and 3-3 in the Southern Conference. Davidson improves to 10-5 and 4-2 in the Southern Conference.
Davidson took an early lead by winning all three doubles matches to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles action Davidson won all six matches to win 7-0. The Terriers put up a tough fight sending four matches to a decisive third set.
Abilene Christian 4, Samford 3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men's tennis team dropped a nonconference match against the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Wednesday as the Bulldogs fell short by a score of 4-3 at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the loss, Samford (9-8) moved to 1-2 on its current five-match homestand and dropped to 6-4 when playing at the Samford Tennis Center this season.
The Bulldogs lost the doubles point, but then picked up singles victories from Zac Dunkle, Carl Abalos and Adam Witcher. With his 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the No. 2 singles position; Samford's Dunkle earned his third straight singles win and improved his record in dual-match play to 9-6.
Abilene Christian (13-7) tallied the critical doubles point and held on for singles victories on courts No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at noon as the Bulldogs welcome The Citadel Bulldogs to the Samford Tennis Center for a critical SoCon showdown.
