SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Samford teammates Cameron Bean and Patrick Wells have been named the Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets March 26-27. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Bean, a redshirt senior from Soddy Daisy, Tenn., finished second in the 5K at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala. His time of 14:29.33 was an outdoor personal best and currently leads the conference. The mark also set a school record.
Wells, a junior from Hoover, Ala., took first place in the pole vault at the Alabama Relays with a vault of 16' 6.75". It marked the second consecutive time he won the event at the Alabama Relays. He is currently tied for the conference lead with teammate Michael Seaman.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they travel to Gainesville, Fla, for the Florida Relays.
Other top track performers included:
Appalachian State's Phil Mitchell, a senior from Glastonbury, Conn., who took ninth place at the Raleigh Relays in the 10K with a personal best time of 30:36. The mark ranks seventh all-time at Appalachian State and currently leads the league rankings.
Furman's Lee Gilmer, a sophomore from Mobile, Ala., who posted sixth-place finishes in both the 800m and the 1500m at the Alabama Relays. His time of 1:54.54 in the 800m ranks third in the league, while his mark of 3:53.21 in the 1500m is second.
The Citadel's Brendan Kight, a senior from Sumter, S.C., who finished fourth in the steeplechase at the Military Track & Field Championships in Lexington, Va., with a conference leading time of 9:25.50. He also broke a school record which had stood for 22 years.
Other top field performers included:
Appalachian State's Malcolm Styers, a junior from Newton, N.C., who set conference leading marks in both the shot put and hammer throw. His toss of 53' 3" in the shot put matched his outdoor personal best and ranks sixth all-time in school history. He improved his personal record in the hammer throw by 11' with a heave of 190' 4", which puts him at fifth all-time at ASU.
Samford's Michael Seaman, a sophomore from Bardstown, Ky., who took second place in the pole vault with a personal best vault of 16' 6.75". The mark ties him for the conference lead with teammate Patrick Wells.
