Appalachian State 7, Bethune-Cookman 0
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.- Appalachian State University men's tennis began its roadtrip to the Sunshine State on a solid note as the Mountaineers earned a 7-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman Monday afternoon. With the victory Appalachian improves to a stout 6-2 on the season.
The Black and Gold started off the match by sweeping through doubles play, easily winning all three matches.
The duo of Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance ran past Marc Misanovic and Yannick Jackson at the number one spot winning 8-1, while Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet won by the same margin at the number two position.
Keeping ASU spotless on the afteroon, the freshmen team of Ezekiel Sansing and Andrew McKinnon downed their competitors as well, also winning 8-1.
ASU cruised through singles action as well, with every Mountaineer earning a victory.
Constance dominated Misanovic at the number one singles position winning 7-6, 6-3 while Jacobs defeated Greg Streat in three hard fought sets at the number two spot.
Humblet and Kloc were victorious as well at the three and four positions, while McKinnonn beat Kristofer Martin 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 at the five spot.
Seeing his first singles match action of the year, Britton Webb handily beat his opponent Jeff Smallwood, easily winning 6-2, 6-2.
Appalachian has a quick turnaround, as they take on North Florida tomorrow at 8 a.m.
College of Charleston 4, East Carolina 3
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Junior Lukas Koncilia notched key victories at the No. 1 spot in singles and doubles as the College of Charleston (6-2, 2-0) earned a hard-fought victory over Conference-USA member East Carolina (10-3, 0-0) in a non-conference men's tennis match at Patriots Point on Monday, March 8.
"I was pleased with the effort of the team today" said head coach Jay Bruner. "We made use of the team work we have been developing this season and we had some great leadership in both singles and doubles. This is a good win for us".
The pairing of sophomore Mickael Trintignac and junior Mickael Boyer earned a doubles victory for the Cougars with an 8-0 decision before a loss at the No. 2 spot evened the competition. With the doubles point resting on the outcome of their match at the No. 1 spot, Koncilia and sophomore Tom Delme, the College of Charleston's most successful doubles pairing, recorded a 10-8 decision in a tie breaker to run their record to 6-2 and give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
In singles action, the Pirates posted victories in the fourth, fifth and six spots to take a 3-1 advantage before Delme registered a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Henrik Skalmerud at the No 3 spot. Trintignac then posted an easy 6-0, 6-2 decision at his customary No. 2 spot to tie the match at 3-3 and once again put Koncilia in a position to earn a deciding point, this time for the match.
Once again, Koncilia did not disappoint as he earned a 6-3 decision in Set 1 before closing out his match, and the team competition, with a 6-1 victory in Set 2. That win gave the College of Charleston a 4-3 victory over a strong East Carolina squad as well as their fourth consecutive match victory.
The Cougars are back in action on Thursday, March 11 when they return to Southern Conference play with a 3 p.m. match vs. UNC Greensboro (7-2, 1-0) at Patriots Point.
The Citadel 7, Case Western 0
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel tennis team completed a 7-0 shutout over Case Western Reserve on Monday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs opened the match winning the doubles point. Alberto Diaz and Yufo Sutantio dominated at the doubles one position defeating Kyle Gerber and Alex Solove, 8-2. Then Derek Dickey and Luis Morett clinched the point in a close rally when they defeated Spartans Nicolas Howe and John Smetona, 8-6, at the doubles three spot. Josh Cook and David Orces lost, 8-5, to Case Western's Richard Brunsting and Rohan Patel while competing at the doubles two position.
In singles action Morett claimed The Citadel's second point in a 6-1, 6-0, defeat against Spartans' Solove at the number six position. Diaz followed in the victory column taking the Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead as he defeated Case Western's Patel 6-3, 6-2, at singles two. Clinching the match victory for The Citadel was Orces with a 6-0, 6-2, win over Case Western's Brunsting at the number four singles spot.
The Bulldogs rounded out the shutout with a win at the number one position as Sutantio defeated the Spartan's Smetona 6-1, 6-3, followed by Cook's 6-3, 6-4, win over Gerber at number three. After winning the first set 6-4, Dickey's opponent Case Western's Carr forced him to a tie breaker. Dickey won 7-6 (7-4) and sealed the victory for The Citadel.
The Bulldogs continue their home stretch against UNC Greensboro in their first conference match at the Earle Tennis Center at 1 pm Tuesday, March 9.
