Elon 6, Chattanooga 1

ELON, N.C.
- The Elon women's tennis team remained undefeated at home with a decisive 6-1 victory over the visiting Chattanooga Lady Mocs in Elon's Southern Conference opener on Sunday afternoon at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Phoenix (9-3, 1-0) has won four straight matches and seven of its last eight. The victory was Elon's sixth straight regular-season win over Chattanooga (2-7, 0-3).
 
Elon came away with the doubles point after winning matches at number one and three. Briana Berne and Laura Graybill moved to 7-4 on the season with an 8-3 victory over Charlotte Bossy and Annie Green at position three. After falling behind 4-3, Anna Milian and Elisa Simonetti kept their seven-match winning streak alive by winning five of the next six games to defeat Emily Hangstefer and Grace Robinette, 8-5, at the top doubles spot. UTC's Jenna Nurik and Shaina Singh used a tiebreaker to take an 8-7 (7-5) decision against Paige Kensrue and Lauren Sessoms at number two.
 
Kensrue was impressive at number two singles, quickly winning her third consecutive match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Singh. Milian toughed out a 7-6 (5-3), 7-5 result over Nurik at number one singles. Milian is 9-2 on the season. Berne posted the match-clinching win for the Phoenix, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Robinette at number four.
 
Sessoms put Elon on top 5-0, topping Jennifer Taylor, 7-5, 6-4 at number five. Chattanooga got on the board when Bossy used a third-set tiebreaker to take a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) win against Graybill at position six. Simonetti finished the match for the Phoenix, rebounding for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision against Hangstefer at number three. Simonetti has won four straight singles matches and is 8-3 on the year.
 
The Phoenix will host a non-conference match against Presbyterian on Friday, March 12 at 2:30 p.m.


College of Charleston 7, Western Carolina 0
College of Charleston 7, Charlotte 0

MT. PLEASANT, S.C.
- College of Charleston women's tennis didn't drop a single set as the Cougars cruised to 7-0 victories over Western Carolina and Charlotte at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point on Sunday.

CofC (7-4, 3-0 SoCon) swept the Catamounts (1-2, 0-1 SoCon) for the seventh consecutive year as the team claimed its third conference win of the season.

Southern Conference Player of the Week sophomore Caroline Newman stretched her singles win streak to five at the second and third spots, respectively. After edging WCU's Izabella Glinska 7-6 in the first set, Newman dominated the second set 6-0 for the win. She followed up with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Charlotte's Kimber Redfern in the afternoon match.

Newman also paired with senior Laura Borza to pick up an 8-2 victory over the 49ers at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Returning from a one-match hiatus, senior Holly Dowse earned an easy 6-0, 3-0 victory in her first singles match of the day before moving on to defeat Charlotte's Alexandra Zinn 6-1, 6-2 at the top spot. Dowse also picked up two victories in doubles action, teaming up with junior Emma Hayman for a pair of 8-3 wins at the No. 1 doubles spot.

Juniors Hayman and Kinsey Casey each brought their singles win streaks to four matches. Hayman defeated WCU's Amanda Massey 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Casey picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win against Catamount Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz at the No. 4 spot before moving to the second spot to defeat 49ers' Andrea Rivera, 6-4, 6-2 in the afternoon match.

Charlotte dropped to 3-6 on the year after the loss.

College of Charleston will play another doubleheader at Patriots Point on Wednesday. After meeting Case Western Reserve in a 9:30 a.m. match, the Cougars will host 53rd-ranked Wake Forest at 2 p.m.


Samford 4, Air Force 3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University women's tennis team picked up its biggest win of the 2010 campaign Sunday as the Bulldogs handed the Air Force Falcons their third loss of the season in a thrilling 4-3 non-conference match held at the Samford Tennis Center.

With the victory, Samford (7-4) improved its record at home to 6-2 and snapped the Falcons' five-match winning streak. Air Force (12-3) entered Sunday's contest having won its previous five contests by a combined score of 34-1. On Saturday, the Falcons swept the Bulldogs' Southern Conference-foe Wofford 7-0.

Prior to Sunday's defeat, Air Force's previous two losses this season came against Colorado and Nebraska.

Samford won all three doubles matches Sunday to take an early 1-0 lead in the contest. The Bulldogs then received a trio of critical victories in singles play to claim the hard-fought 4-3 triumph.

During the singles competition, Samford's Taylor Morgan cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 win against Air Force's Christen Monreal on court No. 1. Morgan, who is the 14th-ranked player in the ITA's Southern Region, improved her singles record to 7-3 this season.

The Bulldogs' second and third victories in singles play occurred on courts No. 3 and No. 4. Samford's Madelie Janse van Rensburg tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win on court No. 3, while Parkison earned the match-clinching triumph in the No. 4 singles contest 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. With Parkison's deciding victory, she improved her singles record to 7-3 this season.

The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs resume play in their SoCon schedule against the Davidson Wildcats at the Samford Tennis Center.

Davidson 5, Richmond 2

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The senior trio of Virginia Berry, Teresa Wang and Ali Gores led Davidson to their second 5-2 win over the weekend as the Wildcats defeated Richmond in a neutral site women's tennis match on Sunday afternoon.

Berry clinched the Wildcats' (7-2) seventh win of the year when she came back from dropping her first set, 6-4, to score 6-2 and 6-1 wins in the next two sets to run her singles mark to 5-3 on the year.

The senior also teamed with Wang at No. 1 doubles to lead Davidson to capturing the doubles point after they scored a 9-8 win. They have a team-best record of 6-2 in doubles play.

Alison Rauh and Stephani Synn helped clinch the point with their fourth win as a pair by earning an 8-6 win over the Spiders' (2-3) Kelly Tidwell and Isabel Arana at No. 2.

Wang and Gores scored the Wildcats' fifth and third points of the match with their wins at No. 3 an 4 positions in singles. Wang needed an extra set after dropping her first set, 7-5, but she came back strong to take a pair of 6-2 sets over Alexandra Smyth. The senior is second on the team with a 6-2 singles record.

Gores earned a straight set decision, 6-2, 6-3, over Sydney Grant at No. 4.

Rounding out the Wildcats final point was Synn, who ran her overall singles mark to 7-0 on the season after she earned a 6-2, 6-2 win to capture the 'Cats first point of the match.

Davidson next plays at Winthrop, Mar. 11, at 3 p.m.


UAB 6, Wofford 1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Wofford women's tennis team lost its match to the University of Alabama Birmingham on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-1. The loss drops the Terriers to 1-10 on the year while UAB improves to 7-3.

UAB jumped out to an early lead by winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. In singles action Wofford won the number five singles match when Stephanie Cox defeated Brittany DeFelice 7-5 in the first set. DeFelice retired in the second.

The Terriers will return to action on Saturday, March 13 when they travel to Statesboro, Georgia to take on Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern at 11:00 am.
