SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Furman outfielder Will Owens has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Western Carolina pitcher Jason Sullivan has been selected as the league’s Pitcher of the Week for all games from March 1-7.

 

In four games last week, Owens led Furman to a 4-0 record by going 11-for-14 (.786) with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and seven runs scored. The sophomore tallied 23 total bases and slugged 1.643 while tying a Furman record for most consecutive hits with seven. Owens also recorded an .800 on-base percentage and notched a steal and a sacrifice fly. After seeing limited action as a freshman in 2009, Owens is currently ranked in the top 10 in the conference in batting average, slugging percentage and RBIs.

 

Sullivan tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout over West Virginia as Western Carolina downed the Mountaineers in a 1-0 pitchers’ duel. It was the second consecutive complete game tossed by Catamount pitching as Vance Chavis worked all nine in a win the previous Sunday. Sullivan fanned eight in nine innings with just one walk and only one extra base hit, improving his record to 3-0 on the season in just his fourth career start.

 

Other hitters receiving consideration were Elon’s Seth Canipe, The Citadel’s Nick Orvin, Georgia Southern’s A.J. Wirnsberger, Appalachian State’s Jeremy Dowdy, College of Charleston’s Baker Knox, Davidson’s Sam Payne, Samford’s Mason Meredeth, Western Carolina’s Tyler Kirkpatrick and Wofford’s David Roney.

 

Other top performers among pitchers were Georgia Southern’s Jake Brown, College of Charleston’s Tom Schiller, Samford’s Jonathan Stephens, Appalachian State’s Will Helms, The Citadel’s Matt Reifsnider, Davidson’s Ian Horkley, Elon’s Jared Kernodle and Wofford’s J.D. Osborne.
