Game 8: #2S College of Charleston 96, #3N Chattanooga 69

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Andrew Goudelock scored 24 first-half points and College of Charleston never looked back as the No. 2S Cougars cruised to a 96-69 victory over the No. 3N Chattanooga Mocs in the final quarterfinal contest of the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championships from Bojangles Coliseum on Saturday night. Tony White, Jr. also netted 22 points to help Charleston (21-10) to its fourth straight semifinals appearance.
 
The semifinals of the league tournament are set, as No. 2N Western Carolina and No. 1S Wofford will tangle in the first game at 6 p.m. followed by No. 2S College of Charleston against No. 1N Appalachian State at 9 p.m. at Time Warner Arena, home of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats. The semifinal games will be televised on SportSouth.
 
The Cougars scored a season-high 56 points in the opening half en route to a season-high 96 points. Goudelock had 17 of his game-high 27 points in the first eight minutes of play. The junior tied his career high with seven three-pointers, while also dishing off six assists. Donavan Monroe added 15 and Jeremy Simmons tacked on 10 for CofC. Casaan Breeden pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds.
 
Chattanooga (15-18) had two players in double figures, led by Ty Patterson's 16 on 6-of-9 field goals. DeAntre Jefferson came off the bench for 15 points, while Ridge McKeither led the Mocs on the glass with nine boards. Keegan Bell totaled eight assists.
 
UTC jumped on top 7-2 in the early going, before Goudelock scored 11 points in a 17-4 CofC run that gave the Cougars a 19-11 lead at 15:03. Charleston connected on 11 of its first 14 field goal attempts, stretching its advantage to 34-19 after ten and a half minutes of play.
 
Down 39-19 at the 7:28 mark, Bell drained back-to-back triples to cap a 17-6 UTC stretch that shaved the lead to nine, 45-36, with 2:40 to play before the break. The Cougar defense shutdown the Mocs over the final minutes and tacked on another 11 points to take a 56-36 lead into the locker room.
 
White, Jr. and Goudelock combined for 36 points and seven assists in the first half. Twelve of the Cougars 20 first-half buckets were from downtown as CofC finished the game shooting 16-of-31 (51.6) from beyond the arc.
 
The Mocs were unable to break into the lead in the second half as CofC led by 20 or more for most of the final minutes.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Donald Sims scored 30 points, 21 in the second half, as No. 1N-seed Appalachian State advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship with a 71-61 victory over No. 4S The Citadel on Saturday evening at Bojangles Coliseum. The Mountaineers shot 58.3 percent from the field and dominated the Bulldogs on the glass, 19-9, in the final period.  
 
Appalachian State (21-11) will face the winner of No. 3N Chattanooga and No. 2S College of Charleston in an 8:30 p.m. contest tomorrow evening from Time Warner Arena. The game will follow the first semifinal matchup that pits No. 2N Western Carolina against No. 1S Wofford. Both games can be seen on SportSouth.
 
Kellen Brand tallied 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting and added six boards for the Mountaineers. Isaac Butts scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Josh Hunter pulled down a game-high 10 boards.
 
ASU held Cameron Wells to only 11 points on 14 field goal attempts, well below his season average of 17.4 ppg. Zach Urbanus led the Bulldogs with 15 points on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Austin Dahn also added 11 points for The Citadel (16-16).
 
After a back-and-forth first half that saw Appalachian State with a 27-24 lead after 20 minutes, the Mountaineers struck quickly to open the final period. A Sims triple sparked an 11-4 run that gave ASU a 38-28 advantage at 15:29.
 
Wells finally got his first points of the evening, scoring on back-to-back plays as a 6-0 Citadel run cut it to 38-34 with 12:55 to go. Sims answered, scoring five of ASU's next 10 points to push the Mountaineers lead back to double digits, 47-37, with 10:26 showing on the clock.
 
Brand scored on consecutive trips down the floor and App opened up its biggest lead of the night, 56-42, with under five minutes to play. Urbanus made a last effort to keep The Citadel within striking distance, nailing three three-pointers in the final two minutes of the game, but App made good on 7-of-9 free throws to secure the win.
 
ASU grabbed 14 offensive rebounds compared to only three by The Citadel, holding a 14-4 advantage in second chance points. The Mountaineers controlled the glass, 42-25.
 
With The Citadel holding a 10-9 edge in the early going, Brand scored seven straight ASU points to put the Mountaineers ahead, 16-10, at 8:23. A 10-4 Bulldog run tied the game at 20 with just over three minutes to go before the half. The game would see two more ties before Sims drained a jumper at the halftime horn and ASU took a 27-24 lead into the break.
 
This was the third quarterfinal game of the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship. The final quarterfinal matchup will be No. 3N Chattanooga versus No. 2S College of Charleston. Western Carolina advanced with a 68-57 win over Elon and Wofford topped UNC Greensboro 59-47 to earn a spot in the semifinals.
