Western Carolina 1, West Virginia 0
Greenville, N.C. – Right-hander Jason Sullivan pitched a three-hit complete game shutout to give Western Carolina the 1-0 victory over Big East foe West Virginia in game one of the seventh annual Keith LeClair Classic at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Friday’s victory continued the Catamounts’ best start in school history as WCU improved to 7-1. West Virginia dropped to 2-6 with the loss.
Sullivan (3-0) allowed only three hits in the contest as he inked his first complete game shutout of his career. The right-hander fanned eight Mountaineers in the victory, just one shy of his previous career-mark set against Gardner-Webb on Feb. 19.
Senior Tyler Kirkpatrick scored the lone run in the contest with his solo home run to left field in the third inning.
With Sullivan’s complete game, Catamount starters have recorded two consecutive complete games. Last Sunday against Eastern Kentucky, left-hander Vance Chavis went the full nine innings as WCU defeated EKU, 5-4.
“That game was all about Jason Sullivan commanding the strike zone with three pitches,” noted Catamounts coach Bobby Moranda. “He was outstanding. He made some huge pitches with runners in scoring position.”
Kirkpatrick, a native of Charlotte, N.C., anchored his fourth roundtripper of the season to lead the Catamounts. On the year, the senior infielder has notched a team-high 14 hits and is tied for the team lead in RBI with eight. Kirkpatrick has recorded a hit in all eight contests this season.
Western Carolina notched two of their three hits in the ninth as Ross Heffley and Tyler White both hit singles off of West Virginia reliever Chris Enourato. The righty settled down to retire Austin Schultz with a fly out to right field.
“I thought we played great defense,” said Moranda. “We made some good plays. Tyler Kirkpatrick had a big hit. It was great to get a win over a solid power-six program.”
Mountaineer starter Jarryd Summers threw eight complete innings, giving up just one hit with 11 strikeouts in the contest.
In total, WVU managed three hits in the game, including a pair hit by freshman Matt Frazer. Frazer led off with a single in the bottom of the second and advanced to second before Sullivan retired the next two Mountaineers. Later in the fourth, Frazer would hit a two-out single to right field before Matt Malloy would ground out to third to end the inning. The biggest WVU offensive threat came in the sixth when Grant Buckner doubled down the left field line. Buckner would again be stranded as Sullivan fanned another Mountaineer to retire the side.
Western Carolina will play Big Ten opponent Illinois on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium. Right-hander Kyle Stewart (0-0, 6.97 ERA) will be on the mound for the Catamounts. GameTracker will be available online at CatamountSports.com.
Appalachian State 7, Rider 5
HICKORY, N.C. - Appalachian State University baseball moved to 7-0 for only the second time in school history with a 7-5 victory over Rider on Friday afternoon at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Appalachian's only previous 7-0 start came in 1985 but included just two victories over NCAA Division I programs. This year's fast start has come exclusively against Division I competition, including Friday's win that knocked Rider (4-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten.
ASU trailed 2-1 after three innings on Friday but rebounded for single runs in the fourth and fifth stanzas and three in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. After the Apps tied the ballgame with an unearned run in the fourth, Jason Wallace (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) snapped the deadlock with a monstrous home run to left field on the first pitch of the fifth inning. The Mountaineers then banged out three hits and benefitted from two walks to tack on three runs in the sixth.
Rider cut the advantage to 6-5 with three runs in the top of the seventh but Appalachian added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame before turning it over to closer Chris Patterson (Laurinburg, N.C./Scotland County), who nailed down the ASU victory and his third save of the season with two innings of hitless relief. Patterson has more than adequately filled the closer role left behind by all-American Zach Quate, as the right-handed senior has yet to surrender a hit in 5.2 innings of work this season.
David Towarnicky (New Bern, N.C./New Bern), Ryan Stetson (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) and Hector Crespo (Miami, Fla./Florida Christian) had two hits apiece and Wallace, Stetson, Jerod Faggart (Concord, N.C./Northwest Cabarrus), Jeremy Dowdy (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield), Chris Alessandria (Ponte Vedra, Fla./Nease) and Doug Jones (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) all drove in runs to pace the Mountaineers' balanced offensive attack.
ASU starter Matt Andress (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) scattered eight hits over six innings and allowed just two runs while striking out eight to move to 3-0 on the season. The three victories already equal his win total from a season ago and moves the senior into a tie for fourth on Appalachian's all-time victories list with 20. Friday's start was the 44th of Andress' career, which broke the school record of 43 previously held by Scott Clark (2003-06).
The Mountaineers and Broncs continue their three-game weekend series when they meet on Saturday at 2 p.m. at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Georgia Southern 9, Marshall 1
STATESBORO, GA - Jake Brown pitched Georgia Southern’s first complete of the season – and second of his career - as the Eagles defeated Marshall 9-1 on Friday night (March 5) at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Brown allowed one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk to lead Georgia Southern (4-6), which seized control of the game with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Arthur Owens (Fayetteville, Ga.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI as the Eagles collected eight hits and drew nine walks against four Thundering Herd
pitchers.
Brown (1-2), a native of Forest Hill, Md., sat Marshall down in order six times. He had just one three-ball count in the first six innings, and retired 13 straight batters beginning with the third inning. The senior threw his first collegiate complete game last season in game two against Furman, which was the first 9-inning complete game by an Eagle since 2007.
A crowd of 1,543 fans watched as the Thundering Herd (4-4) grabbed the early lead on Rhett Stafford’s RBI triple in the top of the second.
Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) and Owens had back-to-back RBI singles as Georgia Southern went ahead to stay with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Eagles added another run on a Kevin Bowles (Statesboro, Ga.) sacrifice fly in the third.
Leading 3-1, Georgia Southern sent 12 batters to the plate and chased Marshall starter Ian Kadish in the fourth. During the inning, the Eagles used hits from Owens, Kyle Blackburn (Marietta, Ga.) and Wirnsberger, four walks, one hit batter and one error to post six runs against Kadish and two Thundering Herd relievers.
Blackburn had an RBI single, Wirnsberger had a two-run single, and Steve Cochrane (Mooresville, N.C.) and Roman Grimaldi (Duluth, Ga.) drew bases-loaded walks as Georgia Southern increased its cushion to 9-1 with the six run inning that marked the last offensive output by either team.
That was more than enough support for Brown, who retired 21 of the last 24 batters he faced and picked up his first win of the season with the victory.
Kadish (0-2) was charged with the loss. He worked 3.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The three-game series will continue on Saturday (March 6) at 2:30 p.m.
Samford 9, Evansville 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford baseball team opened its three-game weekend series against Evansville with a 9-2 win Friday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 6-3 on the season. Evansville drops to 2-7 with the loss.
For Samford at the plate, Wayne Miller went 2-for-6 with a home run and one RBI. Michael Johnson hit a two-run homer in a 1-for-3 performance. Johnson’s home run was the first of his Samford career. Stephen Ballard and Bo Smith drove in two runs each for the Bulldogs.
Jonathan Stephens pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one run on eight hits to earn the win. Stephens struck out three batters while walking none. Grant Sides, Rumiko Forrester and Charles Terry also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.
Evansville was led at the plate by Eric Stamets, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Alex Acheson went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Purple Aces. Shawn Kuester also drove in a run for Evansville. Matt Netherton pitched 2.0 innings, giving up five runs on six hits to take the loss for the Purple Aces.
Samford grabbed the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Miller led the game off with a home run to left-center field for a 1-0 Samford lead.
The Bulldogs added five runs in the second inning to push their lead to 6-0. After Trey Hayes walked with one out, Johnson hit a two-run homer to center field for a three-run Samford lead. Brad Moss scored on an Evansville error to make the score 4-0. Smith later doubled to right-center field to drive in Mason Meredeth and Ballard for a six-run Samford lead.
Evansville got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third inning, Kuester singled to left field to drive in Acheson to make the score 6-1.
Samford plated another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 7-1. Tripp Swann singled to left field to drive in Meredeth for Samford’s seventh run of the contest.
Samford added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 9-1. Johnson scored the first run of the inning on an Evansville error. Meredeth singled up the middle to drive in Miller for an eight-run Samford lead.
Evansville added one run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 9-2. Stamets singled to center field to drive in Ryan Oesterle for the game’s final run.
Samford and Evansville will continue their series with a game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Furman 11, Ohio 9
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Will Owens went 4-for-4, recorded his second straight four-RBI performance, and tied a school record for consecutive hits in leading Furman to an 11-9 comeback win over visiting Ohio Friday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
The victory marked the 400th win for Furman head coach Ron Smith, now in his 17th season as mentor at his alma mater, and second straight decision for the Paladins (3-6). Smith’s 400 victories -- all of which have come at Furman -- are the most in the history of the program, which dates to 1891.
In helping the Paladins erase a 6-2, fourth inning deficit, Owens tied a Furman record for most consecutive base hits with seven set by Danny Rueckel in 2000. The Paladin sophomore right fielder, who collected hits in his final three at bats in Thursday’s 12-3 win over Dayton, singled in the second, belted a two-run home run in the fourth, tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth, and finished his performance in the seventh with a bunt single that Ohio (1-6) misplayed, allowing him and teammate Dylan Cole to come around and score on the play.
In his last two games the former standout at Greer’s Riverside High School has gone 7-for-8, with two home runs, a triple, four singles, eight RBI, and a stolen base.
Both teams banged out 15 hits in the contest, which was played in windy conditions and featured eight home runs, including two pinch hit round trippers. Six Ohio errors accounted for five unearned runs for the Paladins.
Furman took advantage of a Bobcat error to grab a 2-1 lead in the second inning before Ohio rallied to tie the game in the third and go ahead 6-2 with a four-run fourth that included three home runs off Furman starting pitcher Ian Parry. Sam Mahoney led off the frame with a blast to left center field, and Adam Gecewich followed with a shot that Paladin center fielder Will Miller gloved in a leap above the fence before his collision with the barrier dislodged the ball, which fell in the hedge for a home run. Four batters later Gauntlett Eldemire stroked a two-run shot to left field to cap the four-run Bobcat rally.
Furman began its comeback in the bottom of the inning after Cole led off with a double and came around to score on Owens’ two-run home run to left field off Ohio starting pitcher Bryce Butt (1-1).
The Paladins took the lead for good in the sixth, sending all nine hitters to the plate and scoring four runs for an 8-6 lead. Paul Nitto led off with an inside the park home run to right center field, and Owens and Will Muzika added RBI singles to highlight the decisive frame.
A pinch-hit home run by Furman’s Drake Brown in the eighth make it an 11-7 game.
Ohio didn’t go quietly in the ninth, getting a leadoff home run from Kris McDonnough and and one-out RBI single by Eldemire off Paladin closer Nick Karow to make it 11-9. Karow, however, rallied to retire Jerod Kubiak and Robert Maddox on fly balls to secure the game’s outcome.
Kevin Gottlieb (1-1) earned the win in relief after working allowing a run on two hits over three innings.
Butt absorbed the loss for Ohio, yielding eight runs, only five of which were earned, on 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Eldemire paced Ohio’s attack with a 3-for-5, 3-RBI performance.
The two teams play game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
The Citadel 9, Hawaii 5
Hawaii 7, The Citadel 0
Honolulu, Hawai'i - The Citadel Baseball split a doubleheader with Hawai'i on Saturday at the Rainbows' Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu. The Bulldogs claimed the victory in the first game, 9-5, with Asher Wojciechowski earning the win. However, the second game was all Hawai'i as the Rainbows shutout the Bulldogs for the first time since 2007, 9-0.
For the second day in a row, Nick Orvin opened the game with a double on the first pitch. Three batters later, Bryan Altman followed with a double to right field bringing Orvin home for the first run of the game. Wojciechowski walked the first two batters in the bottom of the first, but a strikeout looking by Rainbow catcher David Freitas followed with a ground out by Jeffrey Van Doornum left Hawai'i scoreless at the end of the first.
First baseman Justin Mackert opened the second inning for the Bulldogs with a single up the middle, followed by a stolen base that set him up to advance to third when Legare Jones grounded out. Outfielder William Ladd brought Mackert home with a single to third for the RBI, followed by an Orvin home run to extend the Bulldog lead, 4-0.
Once again, Hawai'i responded with a three-run rally of their own in the second as the next three batters all scored for the Rainbows. Macdonald opened the half inning with a home run, followed by a third baseman Pi'ikea Kitamura triple. Outfielder Matt Roquemore then singled to third base, advanced to second on a throwing error by David Greene that scored Kitamura and advanced Roquemore again to third. A sacrifice ground out to first base by outfielder Sean Montplaisir brought Roquemore in for the score and tied the game at 4-4.
Neither team scored in the third but alternated runs in the fourth and fifth innings to remain tied after five, 5-5. The Citadel's run came on a fourth inning home run by shortstop Kyle Jordan, his second of the season, while Hawaii recorded three consecutive hits and scored on a double-play. However, the Bulldogs continued to tally runs while holding the Rainbows scoreless for the last four innings, giving closer Matt Reifsnider the save and The Citadel the 9-5 victory.
However, nothing went right for the Bulldogs in game two on Saturday as the first batter to get on base for The Citadel came in the top of the fourth on a hit by pitch. Hawai'i scored a run in each of the first three innings and concluded the fourth inning with four runs, two of which were home runs. The Citadel freshmen pitcher Jeffrey Spillane and sophomore Jeremy Long both entered the game for one inning each, but neither could stop a Rainbow team who was capitalizing off Bulldog errors and continuing to add runs. Rainbow pitcher Josh Slaats went 5.3 innings with no hits before William Ladd singled to centerfield and Orvin singled up the middle in the top of the sixth inning. Unfortunately, neither Bulldog would score and Hawai'i claimed the 9-0 victory in seven innings.
Talley, who recorded three errors and walked four batters in four innings, earned the loss and drops to 1-1 on the season. Slaats earned the win for the Rainbows in this first start in 2010.
The Citadel will compete against Hawai'i in the fourth game of the weekend series on Saturday, March 6 at 12:05 p.m. A game recap and results will be available following Saturday's competition.
Alabama 6, College of Charleston 2
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Alabama’s Taylor Dugas went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Crimson Tide to a 6-2 win over College of Charleston Friday night at Patriots Point Stadium. The Tide improves to 7-0 with the Cougars dropping to 8-2.
Dugas started the scoring for the Tide in the second inning, driving in two runs on a single to right center field scoring Jon Kelton and Cody Trotter. Andrew Miller plated the final run of the inning as Dugas was caught in a rundown for the final out. Alabama added one at the top of the third with Ross Wilson driving in Josh Rutledge who knocked a triple down the right field line to reach base.
The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, starting with a double down the left field line from Kolby Epley (Yadkinville, N.C./Forbush). Junior Jose Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla./Broward College) picked up the RBI, driving in Epley on a single and cutting the lead to three.
Neither team scored again until the top of the seventh when Alabama scored two for a 6-1 lead. Rutledge scored his second run of the night on a Clay Jones single and Wilson also plated his second run, scoring on a Cougar error.
Charleston added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Epley added a run on a single to shortstop, scoring Baker Knox who reached base on a walk.
Mesa led the Cougars, going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple. Epley was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base for Charleston. Wilson and Jones added one RBI each for the Tide.
On the mound, Alabama’s Adam Morgan improved to 2-0 with the win, pitching five innings and tossing six strikeouts. Charleston’s David Peterson (Walnut Creek, Calif./Los Comas) pitched six and two-thirds innings in the loss with two strikeouts, dropping his record to 1-1.
The two teams will play the second game of series at 1 p.m. on Saturday with the final game slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Bucknell 18, Elon 3
ELON, N.C. -- Andrew Brouse homered and drove in six runs to lead the Bucknell Bison to an 18-3 victory over the Elon Phoenix in the first game of the 2010 Elon Invitational on Friday afternoon. The loss snapped Elon's home winning streak at 17 games, what had been the longest such streak in the country.
The last time the Phoenix dropped a tilt at Latham Park was April 7, 2009 – an 11-10 decision against 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina.
Bucknell (4-4) jumped on top with two runs in the first on a two-out single up the middle from Drew Constable that plated both Ben Yoder and B.J. LaRosa. Both Yoder and LaRosa had singled with one away.
With one out in the bottom of the first, Alex Swim singled to center before heading to second on a wild pitch. Neal Pritchard then drove home Swim with a double down the left field line to pull Elon (4-4) within a run.
The Phoenix tied it at two when Ryan Adams led off the bottom of the second with a homer to right. It was his second home run of the season.
Elon moved on top when Matt Hinson belted his third homer of the year with two down in the third. The solo shot put the Phoenix up 3-2.
Constable led off the Bucknell fourth with a single. Doug Shribman drew a walk to follow before Scott Reed put down a sacrifice bunt. On the bunt, Justin Hilt's throw to first was high and all the runners were safe. With the bases loaded, David Duffett lifted a sac fly to center to drive home Constable to tie the game at three. The drive was also deep enough for Shribman to tag and advance to third. Gerald Runyan's single through the right side of the infield put the Bison back on top as Shribman crossed the plate with Bucknell's fourth run of the game.
Yoder singled to begin the fifth before LaRosa put down a sac bunt. The throw to first was off the mark and left runners on the corners before Brouse hit a three-run shot to left-center to put the Bison up 7-3. The lead stretched to 9-3 when Shribman belted a two-run homer to left that also scored Constable who had been hit by a pitch. With runners on the corners and two down, Duffett stole second and Elon tried to catch Yoder too far off of third, but the throw sailed into left field allowing Yoder to score as the Bison lead reached 10-3. Brouse added two more RBI with a bases loaded single to right, scoring both Duffett and Yoder.
Bucknell tacked on two more in the sixth on Reed's two-run homer to center that drove home Shribman. The 15th Bucknell run scored when Ben Allen singled home Duffett who had reached on the fourth Phoenix error of the game. Brouse drove in another with a single up the middle before the inning came to an end.
The Bison added another two in the eighth to increase its lead to 18-3.
Jimmy Reyes (1-2) suffered his second consecutive defeat. He allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in just 4.0 innings.
Trey Frahler (1-1) picked up the victory for Bucknell. Frahler fanned nine and scattered seven hits while giving up three runs in his 6.0 innings. Michael Dallanegra earned his first save of the year following his 3.0 innings of shutout ball.
For Elon, Pritchard and Adams both had two hits.
Along with Brouse, Bucknell's Yoder and Constable had three-hit outings. Every Bison starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run.
Elon will be back on the field at 11 a.m. on Saturday for the first game of a double-header against Princeton.
Army 6, UNC Greensboro 3
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Army exploded for five runs in the first inning and Matt Fouch and Kirk Porter made it stand as UNC Greensboro fell to the Black Knights, 6-3, on Friday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Fouch pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Black Knights (3-1) to pick up the win after allowing three runs on five hits. Porter came in to pitch the final 3 2/3 innings, while giving up only two hits to pick up his first save of the season.
UNCG (6-2) starter Matt Parish picked up his first loss of the season after giving up five runs, four earned, on three hits in just a third of an inning.
The Spartans were led at the plate by Ed Jayjack who went 1-3 with a solo home run and Ray Quinones who was 2-4 with a home run of his own.
Shaun Wixted and Kevin McKague each had two RBI for the Black Knights, while David Darnell and Zach Price added two hits apiece.
Price led off the game with a walk and Darnell followed with a single to put runners on first and second. After an infield fly, Joey Henshaw walked to load the bases before McKague delivered a two-RBI single up the middle. After an RBI on a fielding error, Wixted doubled off the left-field line to score McKague and Henshaw and put Army ahead 5-0.
The Spartans were able to get one run back in the second inning after Jayjack led off the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Zach Leach doubled to right center to move Jayjack to third. Jayjack then scored on a groundout to the third baseman.
UNCG showed a little power in the fourth inning as Jayjack hit a home run to right center that hit off the top of the wall and went over. Quinones made it back-to-back homers as his ball just narrowly stayed fair down the right field line to pull the Spartans within 5-3.
The Black Knights added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Henshaw to go ahead 6-3.
It appeared as if UNCG was going to get a run back in the bottom half of the inning after Drew Gehringer led off with a double off the left field wall. With two outs, Jayjack hit a blooper towards center, but second baseman Price made a diving grab in short center field to get the Black Knights out of the inning.
The two teams return on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the second game of the three-game series.
