Postgame Quotes: Game 1, Davidson vs. Elon

Davidson Wildcats

Head Coach Bob McKillop
Opening statement ... "Congratulations to Elon and Matt Matheny. He's done a fantastic job all year long and it hasn't surprised me. I've watched his team perform and they have gotten better and better as the year progressed. I'm very sad for our team and our program, particularly our seniors to have had the careers they have had, to have it end this way is disappointing. The four seniors have left an indelible mark on Davidson College and our basketball program and will be forever cherished as part of our Davidson basketball family. I'm thrilled with the effort our guys gave today and all year long."

On the offense and Elon's defense ... "It was a combination of Elon playing aggressive defense and very good team defense. I talk all the time about tournament play inviting home runs. Tournament play invites people to speed up because of the excitement and the adrenaline and we talked about that in the week leading up to the tournament. If there's one dramatic statistic that jumps out on the negative side is the points off turnovers, we had nine in the first half, part of that is the environment of the tournament and part was Elon's terrific team defense. This team has a lot of tournament experience."

On a timeout called at the 12-minute mark to go on to a 11-1 run to get back in the game ... "We referenced what happened last Saturday night when we had responded and kept fighting and how hard we had fought up to this point. We weren't ready to throw the towel in and there was plenty of time still on the clock."

Senior guard Will Archambault
On the team's performance ... "I thought everyone on our team played real hard like coach said. It was a tough year and we just gave it all we had."

Freshman guard JP Kuhlman
On his freshman season ending and the future ... "I know me and Jake (Cohen) and Nik (Cochran) weren't really thinking about next year we were really just focused on now. It's tough for these seniors to go out like this. You don't want this feeling every year so you are definitely going to keep working hard. It was really about the seniors."

Elon Phoenix

Head Coach Matt Matheny
Opening Statement ... "We're thrilled to advance in this great tournament. For those of you who haven't seen us play much, I am most pleased and impressed with the way our seniors continued to lead us. We have dubbed them the 'Slab Four,' and through a lot of adversity we have faced this year, they have remained steadfast. They have led our team from day one, and particularly in the past four, five, six weeks, we have become warriors. That was not the case early, but it is the case now. It was a hard-fought, difficult victory, but I relied heavily on these seniors, and this victory is particularly sweet for them."

How was it going against your old team and coach ... "It is very tough to go against Coach McKillop. One thing that he taught me is to compartmentalize, and things you can't control, you have to block them out. I didn't think much about who we were playing except for the X-and-O preparations. If I would have, it would have been a major distraction. I credit that in particular to learning that from him [Davidson coach McKillop, his mentor], one of the many things I learned from him. What we did well as a staff was focusing on our guys, because that's the only way we could have gotten through that situation. It was emotionally difficult, but I am just thrilled for our players and with the way they performed."

What will be your focus against Western Carolina ... "We have to get ready for a new challenge. We will rely heavily on our seniors. We've played them twice, so there won't be any secrets, and I think we will be prepared."

Senior Adam Constantine
Up 11 (51-40), were you worried about a Davidson run ... "Coach did a great job of telling us that this is tournament basketball, there are peaks and valleys, and we are just going to keep fighting through. Up 11, we keep fighting through. When we get down, we keep fighting through it. We weren't in shock. We knew this happened before, but this time we knew how to get out of it. Was there any extra motivation after last week's heartbreaking loss to Davidson ... "Personally, being a senior and this being the first time I've beaten Davidson, it is very good. Not just because we beat Davidson, but because this is the tournament. This is where it really matters. You know, you can go 20-0 in the regular season, but when the tournament comes around everyone is 0-0. And right now we're 1-0, and we want to keep going tomorrow."

Sophomore Drew Spradlin
Did the crowd affect you at all ... "We know they're Davidson, we know they're going to bring a good crowd. But it was a great atmosphere, and a lot of fun. It was a great win for our team and our program."
