Honolulu, Hawai'i - The Citadel Baseball improved to 6-1 after claiming a 12-8 victory over the Hawai'i Rainbows in wet and windy conditions at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Thursday night. Senior Chris Boyce (2-0) claimed the win for the Bulldogs while junior lefty Drew Mahaffey was credited for this fourth save.

Sophomore outfielder Nick Orvin got things going early for the Bulldogs with a double to right center on the first pitch of the game and scoring his first of four runs on a Matt Simonelli sacrifice to take the 1-0 lead. Hawai'i quickly responded after their first batter got on base on a passed ball. Greg Garcia flied out to left field, but Kolten Wong was right behind him with a single, advancing Breland Almadova to third base. The next batter popped to first base, but a balk by T.J. Clarkson advanced Wong to second and brought Almadova home for the unearned score.

Both teams went scoreless in the second inning and remained tied at 1-1 going into the third. Orvin got the Bulldogs' momentum going again hitting a triple early in the third inning and recording a run on a Nick Felder sacrifice to first base. The Rainbows tied it up again when Garcia homered to right field at the bottom of the third.

The Citadel took a 4-2 lead at the top of the fifth when back-to-back singles by Felder and Simonelli brought Ladd and Orvin home, marking Orvin's third run of the game. But the Rainbows' sixth-inning rally saw Hawai'i take the lead for the first time of the night with four runs scored on back-to-back doubles by David Freitas and Jeffrey Van Doornum and a sacrifice fly to right field by Sean Montplaisir. Chris Boyce entered the game, replacing TJ Clarkson who pitched 5.1 innings, striking out five batters and walking three in his first start of the season.

Down 6-4, the Bulldogs bit back with a four-run inning of their own in the top of the seventh. Felder earned an RBI as Ladd scored on a single to left field. Felder stole second and scored on a Simonelli double before sophomore David Greene recorded his first home run of the season earning two RBI and regaining the lead, 8-6. Reifsnider entered the game in the bottom of the seventh, striking out three of the next five batters, allowing one hit and no runs.

Both teams scored two runs in the eighth before Drew Mahaffey entered the game for the last 1.1 innings to hold the Rainbows hitless for the remainder of the game. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the ninth after a couple of wild pitches by Harrison Kuroda, two singles and a walk advanced runners and brought Greene and Justin Mackert home to make the final score, 12-8. Alex Capaul took the loss for Hawai'i and drops to 2-1 for the season.

The two teams will meet again on Friday for a doubleheader starting at 8:35 p.m. eastern time. A game recap and results will be available following the second game on Friday.

Furman 12, Dayton 3

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Will Owens ?went 3-for-4 and drove in a career high four runs to power Furman to a 12-3 win over Dayton in baseball action Thursday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
?
Owens, a sophomore and product of nearby Riverside High School making his first career start in right field, delivered a RBI single in a four-run fourth inning, an RBI triple in the sixth, and capped his performance with a two-run home run in the eighth in pacing Furman (2-6) to the win.

Will Muzika and J.B. Jenkins also homered and drove in pair of runs for the Paladins, who banged out 12 hits in the contest. ?Dylan Cole went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Furman’s heavy lumber and second errorless game of the season backed up a solid start by senior right-hander Kevin Gaid (1-0), who worked five innings, allowing four hits, two runs, and two walks while striking out four.

Paladin reliever Daniel Stallsmith came on for Gaid in the sixth and continued his strong early season work, tossing three scoreless frames and surrendering two hits and a walk. ?He fanned three.

Bryce Lahrman (1-1) took the loss for Dayton (4-5) after yielding nine hits and nine run, including seven earned over six innings. ?He walked two and struck out three.

Furman used a Flyer error to plate a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, with Will Miller driving home Muzika on a single through the left side and Reese Wade scoring on a Jenkins sacrifice fly.

Dayton made it 2-1 in the fourth before ?the Paladins answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, two of which came on Dylan Cole’s line drive double off the left field fence. ?Owens followed with a single to right field that plated Cole, giving the Paladins a 5-1 lead.

The Paladins blew the game open with a four-run sixth that began with an Owens’ RBI triple to right center field that scored Nitto. ?Matt Bona followed with a run-scoring single, and Muzika capped the frame with a two-run blast to center field, giving Furman a 9-2 lead.

Jenkins’ solo home run in the seventh and Owens’ two-run shot to left field in the eighth accounted for the Paladins’ final three runs.

Jimmy Roesinger went 2-for-4 to lead Dayton.

Furman opens a three-game series against Ohio on Friday with a 3:00 p.m. game. ?Saturday’s contest is a 2:00 p.m. start, and Sunday’s finale is set for 1:00 p.m. at Latham Stadium. ??

UNC Asheville 16, Wofford 6

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? On a cold and windy Thursday night, the Wofford College baseball team was defeated 16-6 by UNC Asheville at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had eleven hits, but five unearned runs in the top of third by the Bulldogs broke the game open.

Wofford is 3-5 on the season, while UNC Asheville is 3-4. The Terriers were led by David Roney with three hits and Alex Lee with two hits. The Bulldogs had six innings of work by starter Ryan Dull and Danny Baatz, Robert McInthosh and Mike Vaughan each had three hits on the night.

The Terriers got on the board first when James Foster doubled, which was followed by an RBI double by Kyle Behrendt for a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, a single by Danny Baatz drove in two runs. A Wofford error allowed two more runs to score and the Bulldogs had a 4-1 lead.

Wofford left two on base in the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, Mike Vaughan hit a solo home run to right field. With two out, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two players hit by pitch and an error. A walk allowed one run to score and then Robert McInthosh hit a grand slam to center field to clear the bases for a 10-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs added a run on a sacrifice fly by Catlin Carter for an 11-1 advantage. UNC Asheville added two more runs in the top of the fifth. With two out, back-to-back doubles scored on run and a single by Beau Zinman drove in the second run for a 13-1 lead. Wofford was able to get one run back in the bottom of the fifth when a ground out by Konstantine Diamaduros allowed one run to score.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the sixth, one on an RBI double by Danny Baatz and another on a single by Justin Schumer, to take a 15-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Wofford opened with a double by Josh McKinney. David Roney singled, which was followed by a single from Alex Lee to score a run. A double by Landon Bennett drove in another run, while a sacrifice fly from James Foster made it a 15-5 game.

At the top of the seventh, Catlin Carter grounded out to score one run for the Bulldogs. Wofford added a run in the bottom of the inning when Neil Robinette was driven in by a ground our by Taylor Rozier. Neither team would add runs in the eighth or ninth innings for the 16-6 final score.

Wofford starter Pete Noordsy (0-2) lasted 2.2 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits with a strikeout. Bobby DeLuria allowed five runs (one earned) on one hit in a third of an inning. Tom Dolinak threw two innings with two runs on three hits with two strikeouts. Jordan Mickleberry went two-thirds of an inning with four hits, two runs and a strikeout. Brandon Yarusi went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and one run allowed, while Alex Wilson went the final two innings with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed.

UNC Asheville starter Ryan Dull (2-0) went six innings with ten hits and five runs allowed along with three strikeouts. Grieg Harrington went an inning with a strikeout and one run allowed. Tyler Coyle and Dan Weller each went an inning without allowing a hit or run.

Wofford returns to the diamond on Friday evening at 6:00 pm against Gardner-Webb at Russell C. King Field. On Saturday and Sunday, Wofford will host St. Peter’s in a pair of games.
