Appalachian State 4, Gardner-Webb 3
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis was able to bounce back, and pick up a 4-3 win over Gardner-Webb Wednesday afternoon on the Runnin' Bulldogs home courts. With the victory, ASU improves to a stout 5-2 on the season while GWU drops to 4-8 overall.
Appalachian started the match off on a strong note picking up wins in two of three doubles matches.
The duo of Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet defeated Roman Piftor and Andrew Veeder 8-4 at the number two doubles spot, while the freshman team of Ezekiel Sansing and Andrew McKinnnonn secured the doubles point, winning 8-6 at the number three position.
Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs came up just short at the number one position falling 8-6 to Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Atmayer.
In a tightly contested match, Appalachian earned three more wins in singles action to capture the 4-3 win.
Despite a solid effort, Constance lost to Slesarev 7-6, 6-2 at number one singles, but Jacobs was able to keep the Mountaineers on top 2-1 in the match, eeking out a two set victory over Veeder.
Kloc and Humblet led ASU to the exciting win, as Kloc grabbed a three set win at the number three spot, winning 5-7 6-3, 6-1 over Rafael Atmayer and Humblet downed Adam Knutsson-Sunblad 6-2, 6-1.
Both McKinnonn and Sansing suffered to tough losses to their competitors at the five and six spots to round out singles play.
Continuing with the 2009-10 season, the Apps head down to Florida to first take on Bethune-Cookman, Monday March 8 at 2 p.m.
Jacksonville State 4, Chattanooga 3
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match at Jacksonville State today. The Mocs scored three singles wins in the event, but were unable to log their second team win of the season. UTC falls to 1-7 on the year while the Gamecocks improve to 2-6.
Jacksonville State took the doubles point with a win in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. Freshman Roberto Vieira evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Axel Sundberg in the No. 1 match. It was Vieira's first win in the top spot for the Mocs as he improves to 6-4 on the year and 4-4 in dual match singles action.
Freshman Chris Smith gave the Mocs a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over Gustavo Holz at No. 2. Smith had a team-high seven singles wins on the year. Chattanooga was unable to hold on to the lead as JSU took the next three singles matches to secure the win. Freshman Stephen Crofford rounded out UTC's scoring with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 6.
Chattanooga remains on the road this week, traveling to UNC Greensboro on Friday, March 5. Match time with the Spartans is set for 1:00 p.m. (E.S.T.).
