Mocs Claim Top 10 at Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational

Emma de Groot finishes tied for 16th and Maria Juliana Loza tied for 23rd against strong field

AUSTIN, Texas --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team battled to a top 10 finish at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational Sunday afternoon at the University of Texas Golf Club.  Chattanooga, which was in 15th after the first round, ended up 10th just two shots behind No. 23 New Mexico in ninth.

“I’m really pleased with our finish,” said head coach Colette Murray.  “The girls really played well in round two and kept it together in very difficult conditions today.”

No. 1 UCLA captured the team title with a 54-hole total of 884.  No. 7 Arizona finished second at 890, while No. 25 Texas A&M was third at 897.

Junior Emma de Groot was the Mocs’ top finisher tying for 16th at 225 (+9) following a final round 78.  Sophomore Maria Juliana Loza’s 74 was the best round of the day for UTC as she ended up tied for 23rd, two shots behind de Groot at 227.

Junior Christine Wolf matched de Groot’s 78 in blustery conditions today as her 237 placed her tied for 54.  Sophomore Moa Duf tied for 63rd with a score of 239, while senior Katie Taylor rounded out the lineup with a 252, tying for 85th.

The Mocs shot 612 over their last 36 holes which was seventh-best in the field.  It’s a field and course that is great preparation for NCAA Regionals.

“I think we showed what we are capable of over the last two days,” added Murray.  “It was great to see the way we fought after a tough first round.”

Texas A&M’s Sarah Zwartynski claimed medalist honors by six shots over Vandy’s Marina Alex, the No. 3 ranked player in the nation.  Zwartynski’s final round 71 gave her a three-under par effort of 213.  Alex ended up at 219 (+3) just ahead of the UCLA duo of Brianna Do and Stephanie Kono in third at 220 (+4).

The Mocs have a weekend off before heading to Gainesville, Fla., for the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational.  The tournament is a two-day event, April 10-11, at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at UF.

Kenoyer Posts Final Round 73, Finishes Ninth At Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

Athens, Ga. -- Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer posted a final round 73 to finish with a share of ninth place  at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course on Sunday.

A Lighthouse Point, Fla., native, Kenoyer (78-75-73=226) birdied two holes on both the front nine and back nine to total her best round of the tournament and move into the top 10 during the final round of the 54-hole event.  Freshman Laura Wearn (83-81-75=239) also finished strong with a final round two-over 75, but Furman struggled to a 19th place finish.

The Paladins (323-319-309=951) played with just four players due to Jackie Hilea withdrawing from the final round due to an injury.

Duke’s Lindy Duncan (70-72-71=213) cruised to individual medalist honors by an eight-stroke margin over teammate Stacy Kim (76-75-70=221) and helped the Blue Devils (300-300-289=889) claim the team title by finishing 21 strokes ahead of second place Alabama.  Arkansas, Purdue and Auburn rounded out the top five in a 23-team field that included 20 schools ranked in the top 50 nationally.

Furman returns to action April 10-11, at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
