Wofford 4, Chattanooga 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Chattanooga men's tennis lost a closely contested match Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Wofford Terriers.  The Mocs dropped to 2-11 on the season, and 0-5 in Southern Conference play. Wofford is now 7-7 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Chattanooga earned the doubles point when freshmen Ryan Pool and Roberto Viera closed out the No. 1 spot with a 7-2 tiebreaker win. Freshmen Chris Smith and Stephen Crofford jumped out to a lead early at No. 2 but could not hold on, dropping the first doubles match 8-5.

Freshman William Disterdick and sophomore Sam Parfitt were strong throughout in claiming an 8-4 win in their doubles match.

In singles play, the Terriers got right back into the contest with a 6-2, 6-3 win from Tom Wood over Parfitt at No. 5. Roberto Viera took No. 1 shortly after, with just as dominating of a win, defeating Tinus Van Wyk 6-2, 6-1.  It was just Viera's third match of the season at the No. 1 position, and he improved to 2-1 at the top spot. He also moved to .500, 6-6, in dual match action this year.

Wofford took the next two matches - each in straight sets - to move within one of the decisive fourth point. Stuart Robinson defeated Pool at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2.  Manoli Lakis followed that with a win over Disterdick at No. 6, 6-3, 6-4.

The two remaining matches went back and forth before Mocs freshman Jackson Tresnan finally relented in a long two set match. Michael Schecter took the No. 4 spot and earned the deciding point in the match, 6-3, 6-3, although it was much more hard-fought than the scores indicate.

To close out the afternoon, Smith defeated Paul Bartholomy to make the final score 4-3 in favor of the Terriers. The win for Smith improved his team-best singles record to 10-11.


Furman 4, Samford 3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Furman men's tennis team won four singles matches to take a 4-3 win over Samford Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.  With the win, the Paladins improve to 4-0 in Southern Conference play.

Samford opened the match by winning the doubles point after taking victories at number one and number two doubles.  Michael Browder and Carson Kadi combined for an 8-3 win over freshman Carl Lundberg and senior Jordan Walters at number one, while Zac Dunkle and Oliver Reynolds posted an 8-5 victory over seniors Chris Rhyne and Chris Motes at number two doubles.  Furman's team of junior Sawyer Duncan and freshman Andrew Mellow picked up a win in the number three spot, recording an 8-3 victory over Carl Abalos and Scott Foster.

In singles action, Furman won out in singles spots three through six for the team victory.  Lundberg defeated Foster 6-2, 6-2 at number three singles, and Walters beat Reynolds 6-4, 6-2 in the number four singles spot.  Mellow posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Abalos at number five, and freshman Tyler Droll beat Adam Witcher 6-4, 6-4 in the sixth singles match.

The Bulldogs picked up wins at number one and number two singles.  Kadi defeated Duncan 5-7, 6-2, 10-5, and Dunkle beat Motes 6-0, 6-3.


College of Charleston 4, Appalachian State 3

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis posted a quite impressive performance Saturday afternoon, but the Mountaineers could not hang on for a win, as the Apps suffered a tough 4-3 loss to No. 69 College of Charleston. With the loss, ASU drops to 7-6 on the season and 0-3 in conference action, while CofC improves to 11-3 overall and a spotless 5-0 in Southern Conference play.

Continuing with its doubles dominance, the Black and Gold captured two of three wins in doubles play.

The team of Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs easily defeated Lukas Koncilia and Tom Delme 8-2 at the number one spot. Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc followed suit, as the duo rallied a comeback after falling behind 0-3 to hand John Harden and Kyle Parker an 8-6 loss at the two spot, and secure the doubles point.

The freshman team of Andrew McKinnonn and Ezekiel Sansing gave a solid effort, but could not come away with a win, as they fell at the three position to their competitors 8-6.

Humblet's strong singles play pushed ASU out to a 2-0 match lead, as the Canada native downed Mickael Boyer 6-4, 6-3 at the four singles spot.

After falling 6-3 in the first set, Sansing was victorious in the next set winning 7-5, but Harden was able to eek, out the victory at the six spot, winning the third set by a 7-5 margin.

Kloc also lost in three sets at the three position to Delme, and CofC evened the match at two all.

However, McKinnonn came up big for the Mountaineers, as the freshman came back after losing the first set to Parker 7-5, to win 6-3, 6-4 in the next set and put ASU back on top 3-2.

At the two spot, Constance was unsuccessful against Mickael Trintignac losing in two sets and in the match-winner, Jacobs won the first set by fell in the next two by a score of 6-4, 6-4 and CofC came away with the heartbreaking victory.


Davidson 4, Georgia Southern 3

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Georgia Southern picked up singles wins from the top three positions, but Davidson claimed the double point which would prove to be the deciding difference Saturday afternoon. The Eagles dropped a hard fought 4-3 decision at Davidson (March 27) after the Wildcats swept doubles for the sixth time this season.

Georgia Southern fell to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in league play, while Davidson improved to 9-3, 3-1.

Davidson claimed the lead beginning with doubles play as Chris Mark and Sam Burns first took an 8-5 decision over Edio Castanhel and Gregory Bekkers at No. 3 for the first win. Eric Noble and freshman Joe Schafer secured the doubles point with a victory at No. 2. The Wildcat duo defeated Justin Flynn and Jayraj Jadeja, 8-2, to hand Davidson the early lead, 1-0. Davidson closed out doubles competition with an 8-4 win coming at the two seed.

Two quick singles wins at the five and four courts put Davidson up 3-0. Calum Gee edged Bekkers, 6-0, 6-4, before Noble put the Wildcats on the brink of a conference win with a 7-6, 7-6 decision at No. 4.

But the Eagles pulled to within one point with decisions at two and three. Matthijs Verdam put the Eagles on the scoreboard first defeating Mark, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3. Juan Manuel Melian Puigventos followed with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 over Walker Lyons.

With the match at 3-2, Davidson finalized the win as Sam Burns pulled out a three-set victory at the six seed over Flynn. Burns dropped the first set, 6-2, but rebounded in the second, 6-4, and dropped only one game in the third, 6-1, for the Wildcats' fifth straight win.

Georgia Southern closed out the match with a Jadeja three-set win at the top seed. Senior Jadeja and Schafer battled to the last point as all three sets came in tiebreakers. The Eagle dropped the first, 7-6, but responded with consecutive 7-6 sets for the win.
