Miller, Evans Tabbed Men's Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Citadel's Brunson Miller and Western Carolina's Matt Evans have been honored as the Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets March 19-20. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.

A freshman from Murrell's Inlet, S.C., Miller was the fourth overall finisher and the third collegian in the 400m at the CCU Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. His time of 48.05 set a new freshman record at The Citadel and currently leads the league. Miller also split 47.9 in the 4x400 relay as the Bulldogs posted a time of 3:18.94, which ranks second in the conference.

Evans, a senior from Old Fort, N.C., posted two top-four finishes at the CCU Shamrock Invitational. He took second in the high jump with a leap of 6' 10.75". His toss of 208' 4" in the javelin was good for fourth place. Both marks currently lead the league rankings.

The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they travel to Lexington, Va., for the Military Track & Field Championships. Western Carolina hosts the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic on Saturday.

Other top track performers included:

Appalachian State's Phil Mitchell, a senior from Glastonbury, Conn., who placed second in the 5K at the Wake Forest Invitational. His time of 14:48.12 currently leads the league by 10 seconds.

Western Carolina's Stephen Hammond, a senior from Midlothian, Va., who recorded a personal best time of 14:58.55 in the 5K to finish fourth out of 40 competitors at the CCU Shamrock Invitational. The next day he placed third out of 46 in the 1500m with a time of 3:59.23.

Other top field performers included:

Appalachian State's Tim Daly, a junior from Saunderstown, R.I., who took second in the hammer throw at the Wake Forest Invitational. His toss of 180' 4" currently leads the conference and ranks 37th in the nation.
