SPARTANBURG, S.C. - College of Charleston's Jelain McArthur and Appalachian State's Danielle Thorpe have been honored as the Southern Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for all meets March 19-20. This marks McArthur's second consecutive honor. The selections are made by the league's track & field coaches.
A freshman from Laurens, S.C., McArthur broke the school record in both the 100m hurdles and the long jump at the CCU Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. She claimed second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.20. Her leap of 18' 4.75" in the long jump also took second. McArthur posted a time of 25.51 in the 200m.
Thorpe, a senior from Durham, N.C., won the triple jump at the Wake Forest Invitational with a leap of 39' 2.5", which currently ranks 33rd nationally. She also took fifth place in the long jump with a mark of 18' 5.25".
The Cougars and the Mountaineers both return to action Friday when they compete at the Raleigh Relays.
Other top track performers included:
Appalachian State's Ashley McKiver, a senior from High Point, N.C., who placed fifth in the 100m at the Wake Forest Invitational with a time of 12.30. She also finished 17th out of 139 competitors in the 200m, posting a time of 25.24.
The Citadel's Micah Wessinger, a freshman from Chester, S.C., who took fifth place in the 800m at the CCU Shamrock Invitational with a school record time of 2:13.26. She ran a leg in the 4x800 relay, which set a school record. Her leg in the 4x400 relay was good for fourth best in school history.
Davidson's Natalie Atabek, a freshman from Bethesda, Md., who finished third in the 5K at the UNC Charlotte 49er Classic with a personal best time of 17:42.49 which currently leads the league.
Other top field performers included:
The Citadel's Monique Edwards, a graduate student from Kingston, Jamaica, who took eighth in the hammer throw at the CCU Shamrock Invitational. Her toss of 161' 3" moved her into first place in the league rankings.
