McFadden Leads Elon to Fourth at UNCW Event
WALLACE, N.C. -- Tara McFadden finished in third place individually to lead the Elon Phoenix women's golf team to a fourth place showing at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic on Tuesday. It was her fifth top-five finish in eight events this season.
UNC Wilmington, the host school, shot a tournament-low 299 in its final round to claim the team title with a 915 (310-306-299). Penn (300-305-323--928) placed second while Jacksonville State (310-306-315--931) was third.
The Phoenix finished with a 933 following Tuesday's round of 317. Elon shot rounds of 301 and 315 on Monday. Elon placed ahead of Appalachian State, the only other Southern Conference program in the field. The Mountaineers finished seventh with a score of 964 (324-311-329).
McFadden's third round score of 73, coupled with Monday's rounds of 74 and 78, gave her a tournament total of 225 and placed her third out of the 51 golfers in the field. UNCW's Carmen Perez-Narbon claimed the individual title, finishing with a 215.
Diana Davis earned a tie for 11th with a final score of 234 (75-80-79) while Dani Mullin placed 22nd with a 240 (83-77-80). Lauren Lebak was one stroke back at 241 (75-80-86) to finish in a tie for 23rd. Finally, Kelsey Johnson tied for 27th with a 242 (77-80-85).
Playing as an individual, Shannon Prunty placed 19th with a final score of 238 (83-80-75).
Elon will next play April 5-6 at the Mimosa Hills Invitational in Morganton, N.C.
Cougars Finish Tied for Ninth at Pinehurst Spring Challenge
Pinehurst, N.C. ? The College of Charleston women’s golf team fired a 305 in the third round to total a 919 and finish tied for ninth at the Pinehurst Spring Challenge held Mar. 22-23 at Pinehurst #6 in Pinehurst, N.C. Florida State won the tournament with a three-round total of 863, with Maryland in second with an 896. Charleston tied with UNC Greensboro and was just one stroke from Eight-place East Carolina.
Seminole Lacey Agnew took home medalist honors with a 212, while Terrapin Christine Shimel was second with a 214.
Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) led the Cougar effort, finishing tied for 25th with a 228. Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) and Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo del Alarcon, Spain) tied for 28th with a 229 each, while Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) tied for 44th with a 233. Katharina Boehm (Poing, Germany) shot a 242 to tie for 73rd.
Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.), competing as an individual for the Cougars, tied for 76th with a 244.
The Cougars next compete at the Bryan National Intercollegiate April 2-4 at Bryan Park Golf Club in Brown Summitt, N.C.

UNCG finishes tied for ninth at Pinehurst Challenge FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PINEHURST, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro’s Erica Creed shot a team-best 76 on Tuesday in the final round at the Pinehurst Challenge women’s golf tournament as the Spartans finished tied for ninth in the 18-team field at Pinehurst No. 8.
Creed’s 76 gave her a 54-hole total of 227 and put her in a tie for 23rd in the individual standings. The Spartans shot a final round score of 314 to close out the event with a team total of 919, tying for ninth place alongside SoCon foe and tournament host College of Charleston.
Florida State won the team title, coasting to the victory. After beginning the day with a 17-shot lead, the Seminoles nearly doubled the cushion by shooting a final round 286 to finish 33 shots ahead of Maryland, thanks in large part to having three of the best five individual scores. Campbell was third, one shot back of Maryland.
Lacey Agnew won the individual honors, shooting a final round 70 to come back for the win with a 54-hole total of 212. Second-round leader Christine Shimel of Maryland was second, two shots back.
The Spartans return to action April 2 when they co-host the Bryan National at the Champions Course at Bryan Park. UNCG and Wake Forest host the event that will feature the nation’s top teams in women’s collegiate golf.

Chattanooga Women’s Golf Finishes Tied for Third in Atlanta
Christine Wolf records her first top 10 of 2010 tying for seventh
STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team finished tied for third at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate at Eagle’s Landing Country Club in suburban Atlanta. Chattanooga shot a final round 312 tying Augusta State at 934.
Host Georgia State captured the title as its final round 304 completed the Panthers’ 54 holes at 905. Arkansas-Little Rock ended up second at 919.
GSU’s Cathrine Madsen, the second round leader, won medalist honors carding a 221, five-over par. Mitsuki Katahira of Daytona State was second at 224 (+8) followed by her teammate Jennifer Gartin at 225 (+9).
The Mocs were led by junior Christine Wolf at 228 (+12). Her final round 74 (+2) was tied for the third-best round of the day and is her lowest 18 of the Spring.
Two more Mocs joined Wolf in the top 15. Sophomore Maria Juliana Loza and junior Emma de Groot shot twin rounds of 78 on the day to end up tied for 15th at 232 (+16) along with Wolf’s sister Claudia who competes for South Alabama.
Loza and de Groot have finished in the top 15 of the last two events. de Groot has not finished outside of the 20 since the opening event of the season in September (Hooters Collegiate Match Play), which was just a 36-hole medal event to qualify teams for the match play round.
Sophomore Moa Duf shot an 82 for her final 18 today to wind up tied for 40th at 242. Senior Katie Taylor rounded out the Mocs’ lineup in 66th shooting 257.
Chattanooga swings back into action this weekend at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. The three-day event starts Friday, March 26, and wraps up on Sunday, March 28.

Western Carolina Women’s Golf Finishes 13th at Pinehurst Challenge
Josefine Sundh paced the Catamount squad with a 12th-place finish
Pinehurst, N.C. ? Led by junior Josefine Sundh, the Western Carolina women’s golf team finished 13th at the Pinehurst Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston at the par-72, 5,992-yard Pinehurst No. 6 course. The 54-hole, two-day event concluded on Tuesday afternoon.
With a combined 10 birdies, Sundh carded a three-round score of 225 after finishing with a five-over 77 on Tuesday to stand amidst a six-way tie for 12th. The Kumla, Sweden native was the highest finisher from the four Southern Conference schools entered in the event.
Behind the four-under par performance of individual medalist Lacey Agnew, first-round leader, Florida State (863), cruised to the team championship by 33 strokes over second place Maryland after the Terrapins fired 896 to edge third-place Campbell (897) by a stroke. Rounding out the top five teams were East Tennessee State in fourth at 903 with North Carolina State finishing fifth with a three-round score of 905.
Agnew, who posted consecutive rounds of two-under 70 after opening at even par 72 on Monday, won by two strokes over Maryland’s Christine Shimel who led through the first two rounds but faltered on Tuesday with a three-over 75 to slip into the runner-up position. Florida State’s Macarena Silva (217) finished third with ETSU’s Sinead O’Sullivan and Maria Salinas from FSU rounding out the top five in a tie four fourth at 218.
Behind Sundh, who ranked tied for first in par-5 scoring (4.58, 5-under), freshman Malin Jansson finished tied for 25th with a two-day total of 228, following up her consecutive rounds of 74 on Monday with an 80 on Tuesday’s final 18 holes.
Senior Desiree Karlsson shot even par on the par-3 holes and finished tied for 44th with a three-round score of 233. She was followed by Blaire Minter (67th-t, 242) and Rachel Nelson (90th-t, 251) to round out the Catamount side.
Western Carolina returns to action in two weeks, April 4-6, at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, an event it will host at the Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club in Morganton, N.C. The Catamounts finished third in the event a season ago, placing all five golfers inside the top 20 with Karlsson, Minter and Sundh recording top 10 finishes.
Rankin Leads Women’s Golf at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. ? Junior Alex Rankin led the Wofford women’s golf team at the 2010 Pinehurst Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston at Pinehurst #6 in Pinehurst, N.C.
The Terriers fired a 962 (314-318-330) over three rounds to finish 17th in the tournament.
Rankin, a junior from Anderson, S.C., led the team with a score of 229 (76-74-79) to finish tied for 28th out of 93 individuals competing in the tournament. She led the team for the second week in a row, after finishing tied for third at the Low Country Intercollegiate a week ago.
Sophomore Sarah Hurt carded a 238 (77-82-79), while junior Meredith Few and senior Sarah Herbert recorded scores of 248 and 249, respectively.
Florida State claimed the team championship with a score of 863 (287-290-286) on the Par-72, 5,992 yard course. Xu Paces Women’s Golf at Lady Seahawk Classic
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Freshman Yue Xu fired consecutive round of 75 at the Lady Seahawk Invitational, and finished tied for ninth at the event. Appalachian State University women’s golf placed seventh at 324-311-329=964 (+100).
Xu finished with a score of 75-75-83=233 (+17), just three strokes out of sixth place. Fellow freshman Rumbidzai Masaamvu shot an 81-74-81=236 (+20) to finish tied for 15th.
Kerri Dice placed 20th with an 81-78-80=239 (+23) while Kristina Boo finished in 42nd at 87-84-85=256 (+40). Brooke DeHart improved in the third round to card an 88-88-85=261 (+45) for the tournament.
Host UNC Wilmington won the tournament with a 310-306-299=915 (+51), led by overall winner Carmen Perez-Narbon’s 215 (-1).
Also competing from the Southern Conference, Elon placed fourth (933) as a team.
The Mountaineers host the University Cup on Thursday, March 25 at Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton, N.C.
