Elon Tops Georgia Southern, 5-2

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Elon women's tennis team pulled out a competitive 5-2 victory over the host Georgia Southern Eagles at Hanner Tennis Complex on Monday afternoon. The Phoenix rebounded after losing the doubles point to win five of the six singles matches and moved to 13-3 overall, 4-0 in Southern Conference action. Elon has won eight straight matches and with the win today equaled its total number of wins from all of last year.
 
With the Phoenix holding a slight 3-2 advantage, Elisa Simonetti and Lauren Sessoms were the final two singles players on the courts for Elon. Both matches were very close and extremely competitive, needing three sets to determine a winner. Simonetti closed the deal first, sealing the Elon victory with a 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (6) win over Melanie Rolle. Sessoms followed with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 defeat of Jessica Fuller to make it a 5-2 final in favor of the Phoenix. 
 
The Phoenix's top doubles tandem of Simonetti and Anna Milian won its 11th consecutive match, cruising to an 8-1 win over Ali Beavers and Natalie Maffett. The duo has not lost since January 27. Despite dropping the match at number one, Georgia Southern took the early lead with wins in the remaining two doubles matches.
 
Paige Kensrue shifted the momentum back in Elon's direction, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Maffett to begin singles play. 
 
Elon took the 2-1 advantage after freshman Briana Berne topped Kristi Kegerreis, 7-6 (4), 6-0, at number four. Milian helped extend the lead with her 6-3, 7-5 defeat of Beavers on court one. Milian is 13-2 on the season and has won eight consecutive matches.  
 
Georgia Southern's Allison Beeler managed to close the gap to 3-2, earning a 7-6 (6), 6-2 result against Laura Graybill at number six, before Elon pulled out the final singles matches to take the match.
