Boyd, Suskauer Garner Weekly Softball Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State's Katie Boyd has been named the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, while Furman's Kayla Suskauer has been honored as Pitcher of the Week for all games March 15-21. The selections are made by the league office.

A junior third baseman from Walkertown, N.C., Boyd hit .625 and did not register a strikeout in Appalachian State's three-game series with Elon last weekend. She recorded two multi-hit games in the series.

In Appalachian State's 5-2 win, Boyd was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. With the two teams tied in the top of the eighth, Boyd hit a single to bring in a run that proved to be the game winner.

Boyd hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season Sunday, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Elon came back to tie the game, but after Boyd reached first base on a walk, she stole second and eventually scored to put ASU ahead again. The Phoenix came back a second time and won the game 3-2.

Suskauer, a freshman right-handed pitcher from Tampa. Fla., earned her first career victory Saturday as the Paladins topped Samford 5-2. For the week, she allowed just two hits in 5.2 scoreless innings pitched.

In the victory against the Bulldogs, Suskauer pitched five innings, allowing just one hit while striking out two batters. She also saw action against No. 6 Georgia on Wednesday, registering one hit and tallying a strikeout.

So far this season, Suskauer has registered just two hits and allowed no earned runs in 8.2 innings of work against league opponents.

Appalachian State returns to action Thursday when it hosts Gardner-Webb. Furman welcomes Mercer on Tuesday.

Also receiving nominations for player of the week were College of Charleston's Amber Shifflett, Elon's Tomeka Watson, Furman's Lana Mackey, Georgia Southern's Jenny Side, UNC Greensboro's Alex Emeterio, Samford's Aaren Fisher and Chattanooga's Nikki Waters.
