UNC Greensboro 5, Wofford 2
Spartanburg, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team fell to Southern Conference foe UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center by a score of 5-2. With the loss the Terriers fall to 6-7 on the year and 2-1 in the Southern Conference. UNC Greensboro improves to 11-2 on the year and 3-0 in the Southern Conference.
The Spartans took an early lead by winning two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 advantage. Stuart Robertson and Tom Wood were victorious for the Terriers defeating Kyle Eddins and William Johns 8-2 at number two doubles.
In singles action UNC Greensboro won four of six singles matches to win the match 5-2. The Terriers were led by Paul Bartholomy who defeated Yaroslav Litus 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 in number four singles. In the final match of the day Tom Wood defeated William Johns at number six singles. Johns won the first set 6-3 but Wood rallied to win the second set 6-2. The final set was decided over a ten point tie break which Wood won 10-4.
College of Charleston 7, Charlotte 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston (9-3, 3-0) rebounded strongly after their six-match win streak was snapped by No. 14 Mississippi a day earlier as they swept Charlotte (4-11, 3-2 C-USA) 7-0 in a non-conference men's tennis match at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
"It was a good battle" said head coach Jay Bruner. "We played from behind in doubles until the end but kept fighting and competed well".
The Cougars had to play well as Charlotte did not surrender any easy victories despite the 7-0 score. CofC swept the doubles point but junior Lukas Koncilia and sophomore Tom Delme had to fight their way to a 10-8 victory at the No. 1 spot to clinch it while senior Steven Myers and freshman Billy Kenny posted a 9-7 decision. Junior Mickael Boyer and sophomore Mickael Trintignac completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, sophomore John Harden notched a hard fought 7-5, 7-5 decision at the No. 6 position while Boyer had the easiest victory at No. 4 by a 6-0, 6-4 score. Delme posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 and was followed by Trintignac with a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 2.
Senior Joe Nicolazzi took No. 5 singles 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 while Koncilia clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 (2) decision.
The College of Charleston has now won seven of its last eight matches heading into Monday's key Southern Conference match against Elon. That battle will take place at 2 p.m. on March 22 at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
San Diego State 4, Furman 3
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Furman head coach Paul Scarpa was inducted into the Blue Gray Hall of Fame and the Paladins brought home the tournament's individual and team sportsmanship awards to highlight the final day of competition at the Blue Gray National Classic in Montgomery, Ala., as San Diego State pulled out a 4-3 win over the Paladins.
Scarpa, the winningest head coach in the history of Division I tennis, was honored as the 2010 Blue Gray Hall of Fame Inductee. He joins a Hall of Fame group of 43 members for the tournament that has highlighted college tennis for over 60 years.
Paladin freshman Carl Lundberg was awarded the tournament's individual sportsmanship award.
In the team's match against San Diego State, the Aztecs won the doubles point with victories at number one and two doubles. Vladimirschii and Giovanni Vaglietti defeated Paladin seniors Chris Motes and Chris Rhyne 8-5 at number one, while Andre Feliz and Schulz van Endert beat junior Sawyer Duncan and freshman Andrew Mellow 8-5 in the second doubles match. Furman posted a victory at number three doubles, as senior Jordan Walters and Lundberg combined for an 8-1 win over Matthew Tosches and Luis Rattenbuger.
The Paladins picked up wins in three singles matches, with Walters defeating Feliz 6-1, 6-2 at number three, and Mellow defeating Schulz van Endert 6-3, 6-3 at number five. Paladin freshman Tyler Droll recorded a 7-5, 6-2 win at number six singles.
San Diego State also picked up three singles wins for the team victory. Vladimirschii defeated Duncan 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the number one singles match, and Vaglietti beat Motes 6-3, 6-3 at number two. Rattenhuber defeated Lundberg 6-2, 6-4 at number four to seal the win.
"Although we had three tough matches in this tournament, we are excited that we won the Sportsmanship Award," said Scarpa. "We pride ourselves on our sportsmanship at Furman, and as long as we compete hard and do it the right way, we come out a winner. It was a great honor to be inducted into the hall of fame and for our team to be invited to this prestigious tournament."
Furman (5-9, 2-0 SoCon) will play host to Appalachian State Wednesday at 3 p.m.
