SPARTANBURG, S.C. - College of Charleston's Caroline Newman has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches February 22-28 the league office announced Tuesday (March 2).  Newman went undefeated last week, winning both of her matches in singles play and doubles competition last week.  The Player of the Week is awarded by the conference office. 

Newman moved up to the No. 3 singles position last week and downed Samford's Madelie van Rensburg 6-2, 7-5, as the Cougars posted a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs.  Newman then improved her record in singles play to 6-2 on the year with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Chattanooga's Shaina Singh in a 6-1 victory for College of Charleston.      

Competing at No. 3 doubles with Irene Viana, Newman helped the Cougars earn doubles victories in both matches.  Newman and Viana topped Samford's Madelie van Rensburg and Stephanie Parkinson, 8-4 Saturday afternoon.  CofC's No. 3 doubles team earned an 8-0 win over Chattanooga's Annie Green and Brianna Wishing on Sunday.

College of Charleston (5-4, 2-0 SoCon) hosts Western Carolina March 7.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Furman's Monica Arguello, Samford's Rebecca Kirven, Chattanooga's Jenna Nurik and Wofford's Stephanie Cox.
