UNC Greensboro 4, Coastal Carolina 3
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro's Yaroslav Litus rallied from down a set to defeat Alex Funkhouser in a three-set thriller to clinch a 4-3 win over Coastal Carolina in men's tennis action Thursday afternoon at UNCG Tennis Courts.
Playing at No. 3 singles, Litus lost the first set by a 6-4 score then rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-2, and then won the third 6-4 to give the Spartans a 10-2 mark on the season and raise their mark at home to 8-0 on the spring season.
Orcun Seyrek, Timion Mejis and William John recorded straight-set wins in singles play to set the stage for Litus' thrilling clincher.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they visit Wofford for a Southern Conference match at 1:00 p.m.
Tulsa 4, Furman 0
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Furman men's tennis team opened play at the Blue Gray National Classic on Thursday morning in Montgomery, Ala., with a 4-0 loss to #39 Tulsa.
The Hurricane's Philip Stephens and Ashley Watling defeated Paladin seniors Chris Motes and Chris Rhyne 8-2 at number one doubles, before Marcelo Arevalo and Ive Grant beat seniors Jordan Walters and Robert Bruner 8-2 at number three doubles to clinch the doubles point. Play was suspended at number two doubles.
In singles action, Arevalo defeated Paladin junior Sawyer Duncan 6-1, 6-3 at number one singles, while Alastair Barnes beat Walters 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth singles match. Grant posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over freshman Tyler Droll at number six singles. With four points for Tulsa to clinch the win, the rest of the singles matches were unfinished.
Furman (5-7, 2-0 SoCon) will face William and Mary at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning in the second round of the tournament.
