Appalachian State 7, UNC Asheville 0
BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis earned its seventh win of the season Wednesday afternoon, as the Apps handed UNC Asheville a resounding 7-0 defeat to improve to 7-4 on the 2009-10 campaign.
UNCA made a statement early in doubles action, as the senior team of Peter Jacobs and Trent Constance fell 8-3 to their competitors at the number one spot. Despite the early loss, the duo of Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc continued with their strong play, squeaking out a 9-7 victory at the number two position.
In the final match deciding the doubles point, Andrew McKinnon and Ezekiel Sansing downed Thomas Rees and Alex Appelt 8-3 at the third spot, to take the early 1-0 match lead.
After suffering a dismal 6-0 first set loss, Constance rallied and defeated Nicolai Nonnenbroich 6-0, 7-6 two pick up a victory at the number one singles position.
Jacobs continued with ASU's impressive play as he was victorious at the two spot, winning 7-6, 6-2, while Humblet had no trouble with Jonas Brobeck at the three position, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 win.
Kloc downed Nathan White 6-3, 6-0 at the number four singles spot, while McKinnonn and Sansing grabbed decisive victories as well at the five and six positions, keeping ASU spotless on the day in singles action.
ASU will now have a week off to prepare for a monster match at Furman on Wednesday March 24. The match is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. in Greenville, S.C.
Drake 6, Samford 1
WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The Samford men's tennis team's road woes continued Wednesday as the Bulldogs dropped a 6-1 decision against the Drake Bulldogs at the 2010 Battle by the Beach Tournament hosted by UNC Wilmington.
With the loss, Samford (8-6) fell short in its fourth-consecutive match and dropped to 0-4 on its current five-match road swing. The Bulldogs will conclude their spring break trip Sunday with a key Southern Conference matchup against Georgia Southern.
Drake (9-5), which competed in its first outdoor dual match of the 2010 season Wednesday, extended its winning streak to four straight contests. Prior to defeating Samford, Drake rattled off consecutive home victories against Gustavus Adolphus 7-0, Graceland 6-1 and Missouri-Kansas City 7-0.
In Wednesday's match held at the UNCW Tennis Complex, Drake swept the doubles competition and then picked up singles victories on courts No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6.
Samford's lone win occurred in the No. 2 singles contest as sophomore Carson Kadi cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against James McKie. With the win, Kadi improved his record in singles play to 8-5 this season.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Sunday at noon as the Bulldogs conclude their five-match road trip with a SoCon showdown against the Georgia Southern Eagles in Statesboro, Ga.
Radford 6, Elon 1
RADFORD, Va. - The Elon men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision against an impressive Radford Highlanders squad on Wednesday afternoon at the RU Tennis Courts. Sophomore Eric Turner had a strong individual performance, picking up the lone singles victory for the Phoenix (4-9). Radford (3-8) extended its home winning streak to 35 straight matches.
The Highlanders got on top early, winning the doubles point to snap a stretch of four straight matches in which Elon had earned the doubles point. Elon's Philip Nemec and Cody Stauffer-MacDowell did win their fifth consecutive match, taking an 8-4 decision against Paul Boslet and Erik Finkenbrink at number two doubles. The duo is now 5-3 on the season. At the top spot, Chase Helpingstine and Alberto Rojas battled back from a 5-1 deficit, but couldn't finish out the match. The tandem fell 8-6 to Ivan Salec and Thomas Dehaen. Radford clinched the point when Zack Watson and Igor Ogrizek took an 8-4 result against Turner and Clark Howell.
Watson extended the home team's lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Stauffer-MacDowell at number five singles. Turner managed to cut the deficit to 2-1, defeating Boslet, 7-5, 6-0 at number four. Finkenbrink cushioned Radford's lead, posting a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Thomas Darling at number six.
The top three singles matches were very tight. Salec, currently ranked 79th in the country, narrowly pulled out a 7-6, 7-5 win over Nemec at number one to clinch the victory for the Highlanders. Dehaen ended Helpingstine's five-match winning streak with a 7-6, 6-3 result at number two. Rojas rebounded to force a tiebreaker after losing the first set, but Ogrizek took the 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) victory.
Elon will return to Southern Conference action when it challenges The Citadel on Sunday, March 21 at noon in Charleston, S.C.
