Bulldogs Rally for Second Place Finish at Samford Intercollegiate

ONEONTA, Ala. --- The Samford University women’s golf team turned in its best round of the 2010 Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday as the Bulldogs rallied back from 14 shots down to finish tied for second place at the annual 54-hole event held at the Limestone Springs Golf Club.

 

Samford finished with a total team score of 910 (305-309-296) on Tuesday. The Bulldogs ended the competition deadlocked with South Alabama for second place, while Jacksonville State finished first with a final tally of 904 (306-303-295).

 

Jacksonville State earned its second straight Samford Intercollegiate title Tuesday. The Gamecocks were also victorious in the annual event a year ago.

 

South Alabama’s Fanny Eineren won the individual championship of the two-day competition with a three-round score of 3-under-par 213. After carding scores of 69 and 70 on Monday, Eineren was able to cruise to the individual title with a third-round mark of 74.

 

Samford seniors Heather Arnold, Katelyn Stanier and Sara Hunt all turned in low scores Tuesday. Arnold, the Bulldogs’ native of Lenior City, Tenn., earned a fourth-place finish in the individual standings as she closed out her tournament with a third-round mark of 71. The score was the Bulldogs’ best round of the tournament. Arnold concluded the event with a 54-hole total of 221 (76-74-71).

 

Stanier played her way to a fifth-place finish Tuesday with a third-round score of even-par 72. The Bulldogs’ native of Newnan, Ga., improved by two strokes in every round and finished with a 54-hole score of 222 (76-74-72). Samford’s Hunt also earned a top-10 finish as she placed 10th with a three-round total of 227 (73-80-74).

 

The Bulldogs’ junior Sarah Butts and true freshman Anna Heim rounded out the team’s scoring with final marks of 240 (80-81-79) and 244 (81-81-82), respectively. Samford freshman Kayla Turner also competed this week as an individual and tallied a 54-hole score of 246 (83-82-81).

 

The Samford women’s golf team will next be in action April 10-11 as the Bulldogs continue their 2010 spring schedule at the annual EKU Spring Invitational hosted by Eastern Kentucky University at the Arlington Golf Club in Richmond, Ky.
