Wofford 4, Appalachian State 3
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team rallied to defeat Southern Conference foe Appalachian State 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center. The win improves the Terriers record to 6-6 on the year and 2-0 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State drops to 6-4 and 0-1 in the Southern Conference.
The Mountaineers took an early lead in the match by winning two out of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Alain Humblet and Philip Kolc defeated Stuart Robertson and Tom Wook 8-5 at number two doubles. Drew Superstein and Tinus Van Wyk won the lone doubles match for the Terriers when they defeated Andrew McKinnon and Ezekiel Sansing 8-4 at number three doubles. Trent Constanace and Peter Jacobs clinched the doubles point for the Mountaineers when they defeated Paul Bartholomy and Alan Donald, 8-6 at number one doubles.
In singles play the Terriers rallied to win four of six matches. Drew Superstein tied the score for Wofford when he defeated Britton Webb 7-5, 6-0 at number six singles. Appalachian State again took the lead 2-1 when Alain Humblet defeated Alan Donald 6-4, 6-3 at number three singles. Stuart Robertson tied the score at two when he defeated Peter Jacobs 6-4, 6-4 at number two singles. The Mountaineers took a 3-2 lead when Philip Kloc defeated Paul Bartholomy 6-4, 6-3 at number four singles.
Michael Schecter tied the score at three when he defeated Andrew Mckinnon at number five singles. Schecter won the first set 6-2 but lost the second 7-5. In the final set Schecter won 6-2.
The number one singles match was left to decide the winner. Tinus Van Wyk won in a three set back and forth battle over Trent Constance. Van Wyk won the first set 6-3 but lost the second set in a tie breaker 7-6. In the final set Van Wyk won 6-3 to give the Terriers the victory.
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday March 20th when they will take another Southern Conference foe UNC Greensboro at 1:00 at the Reeves Tennis Center
College of Charleston 5, Jacksonville State 2
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston (8-2, 3-0) has entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll at No. 60 following a 5-2 victory over Jacksonville State (5-8, 1-1) in a non-conference men's tennis match at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
"This is great for our program" said head coach Jay Bruner. "We have been building towards this all season and it is nice to see the team jump into the rankings after all their hard work".
The Cougars got off to a fast start against JSU as they swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead with the doubles point. The Gamecocks were able to earn a pair of singles victories as Nenad Marcec claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 while Chris Duke won a hard fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision at the fifth position.
That would be all they would get, though, as the College of Charleston took control of the match with convincing victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Junior Lukas Koncilia defeated Brian Kenyon at the one spot by a 6-3, 6-2 score before sophomore Mickael Trintignac won his fifth match in his last six with a 6-2, 6-2 win vs. Axel Sundberg.
Junior Mickael Boyer and sophomore John Harden wrapped up the match for the Cougars with a pair of victories at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively. Boyer posted a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Gustavo Holz at four while Harden defeated Igor Santos 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The College of Charleston improves to 8-2 overall on the season and runs its win streak to six matches dating back to February 27 at Chattanooga.
The Cougars will next be in action when they host No. 13 Mississippi in a non-conference match Friday, March 19 at the College of Charleston Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
UNC Wilmington 7, Samford 0
WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The Samford University men's tennis team suffered its third straight road defeat Tuesday as the Bulldogs dropped a 7-0 decision against the 71st-ranked UNC Wilmington Seahawks at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
With the loss, Samford (8-5) moved to 3-3 in road contests and fell to 0-3 on its current five-match road trip. Prior to Tuesday's defeat, the Bulldogs came up short in recent Southern Conference matchups against Elon and UNC Greensboro.
UNC Wilmington (8-4), Samford's first ranked opponent of the 2010 spring season, snapped its three-match losing streak Tuesday. Prior to defeating the Bulldogs, the Seahawks lost consecutive matches against Boston College 4-3, 29th-ranked Georgia Tech 6-1 and 59th-ranked East Tennessee State 4-3.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. as the Bulldogs face Drake in another non-conference matchup.
