MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - No. 67 College of Charleston won four of the six first sets in singles competition to put pressure on 42nd-ranked NC State, before eventually falling 7-0 in women's tennis on Monday afternoon at Patriots Point.

The Wolfpack (6-4, 2-1 ACC) won the doubles point despite yielding the top-seeded match. Senior Holly Dowse and junior Emma Hayman defeated Sanhya Nagaraj and Berkley Brock at the No. 1 spot, 8-5. The victory was the duo's second straight win at the top spot over a pair from a nationally-ranked team. Dowse and Hayman defeated the 31st-ranked pair in the country from Oklahoma, 8-3, yesterday.

Dowse also held her own against Nagaraj, who ranks 51st in the country, at the No.1 singles spot. She took the first set, 6-3, before yielding the final two sets 6-2, 6-1. Dowse was one of four Cougars who pushed their opponents to a third set in the match that lasted over four hours.

Hayman captured the first set 6-1 as a second seed against Lenka Hojckova before falling 6-0, 6-4 in straight sets. Junior Kinsey Casey claimed a 6-4 first-set victory at the No. 4 spot before her opponent, Daria Petrovic, returned to win the ensuing sets 6-3, 6-1. Rookie Irene Viana edged Diana Mortlock 7-6 in the first set before narrowly losing the following sets 7-6, 10-7.


Tennessee-Martin 4, Chattanooga 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 match to Tennessee-Martin at the UTC Tennis Courts today.  The Skyhawks scored a three-set win in the final singles match to seal the victory.  

The Lady Mocs fall to 3-8 on the year while UTM improves to 4-2 overall.  Chattanooga started off strong by sweeping the doubles point for the second straight match.  Freshman Jenna Nurik and sophomore Shaina Singh won their third straight match by defeating UT-Martin's Alice Laing and Jodie Tiley 8-5 at No. 2.  Sophomores Emily Hangstefer and Charlotte Bossy teamed up for the win at No. 1. 

The Skyhawks quickly took a 2-1 with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.  Freshman Jennifer Taylor evened the team total with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Anna Marie Herbold at No. 6.  Taylor improved to 12-5 on the year with her second straight win. 

Tennessee-Martin went back up 3-2 with a win at No. 3.  Nurik tied the score with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Jodie Tiley at No. 1.  It was Nurik's fifth win in her last seven matches as she improves to 13-6 overall.  Her 13 wins lead the Lady Mocs.   

Hangstefer's No. 2 bout with Johanie Van Zyl was the last match on the court and the deciding battle with the score tied 3-3.  Van Zyl won the first set 6-4 while Hangstefer took the second set by the same score.  The third set went all the way to a tiebreaker with the match knotted at six games each.  Van Zyl sealed the team win by taking the tiebreaker 7-5. 

Chattanooga will be back in action on Thursday, March 18 when they travel to Tennessee Tech.  Match time against the Golden Eagles is set for 3:00 p.m. (E.D.T.) in Cookeville, Tenn.  UTC will be back at home on Saturday, March 20, when they host UAB at the UTC Tennis Courts.  Live scoring will be available for Saturday's match with the Blazers.
