Western Carolina Tied for Lead at Low Country Intercollegiate

Western Carolina Leads over a Four-Way Tie for Second at Low Country Intercollegiate after Saturday's Opening Round

WCU's Blaire Minter is amidst four-way tie for individual lead; final round begins Sunday morning at 9:30 am

 

Hilton Head, S.C. - Defending tournament team champion Western Carolina collectively carded 304 as a team on Saturday to lead by five strokes over a three-way tie for second place the Low Country Intercollegiate being held on the par 72, 5,814-yard South Course at the Moss Creek Golf Club. WCU's Blaire Minter was among four to shoot two-over 74 on Saturday, battling both the tough layout and windy conditions, to stand tied atop the individual leader board.

 

The second and final round will begin with a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 am.

 

WCU is followed by a three-way tie between Augusta State, Jacksonville and James Madison five strokes in arrears at 309. Richmond is 11 strokes off the pace at 315 to round out the top five teams after the opening round.

 

Minter, the defending medalist of the event, shot par on 15 of her first 18 holes to lead the field in conjunction with Yue Xu of Appalachian State; Natalie Wille of Augusta State; and Richmond's Jillian Fraccola. Minter, a native of Marietta, Ga., also was the only player to shoot under par on the par 4 holes (3.90). Xu and Bree Baumgartner of The Citadel each recorded Eagles in the first round.

 

Also for the Catamounts, junior Josefine Sundh is in the clubhouse in a three-way tie for fifth while senior Desiree Karlsson is tied for eighth giving WCU three inside the top 10. Sundh shot a three-over, 75, while Karlsson was one-stroke back after shooting four-over, 76.

 

Rounding out Western Carolina's lineup was freshman Malin Jansson in a tie for 20th after shooting 79 with senior Tiffany Schisler firing 87 to stand tied for 57th.

 

Western Carolina led the 14-team field by scoring par on 56 holes combined - including Minter's 15 - which was one more than Jacksonville at 55. The Catamounts carded five birdies, while Augusta State and Wofford each recorded eight apiece to pace the field.

Xu Leads Low Country Intercollegiate After Round One

 

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Freshman Yue Xu fired a first-round 74 (+2) to earn a share of the individual lead at the Low Country Intercollegiate on Saturday. Appalachian State University women's golf stands in eight place with 18 holes to play.

 

Xu was one of just two players to record an eagle in the round and is tied at two-over with three other players, including Western Carolina's Blair Minter, who won the tournament in 2009.

 

Kristina Boo shot an 80 (+8) to tie for 26th place while Mimi Burke shot an 84 (+12) for 48th place with Sunday's round remaining.

 

Kerri Dice shot an 88 for 60th place and Brooke DeHart was one stroke back in 64th.

 

The Mountaineers shot a 326 (+38) to stand four strokes behind seventh-place Wofford. The hosting WCU Catamounts lead the event at 304 (+16).

 

Also competing from the Southern Conference, Elon stands tied for 10th place at 329 (+41) while The Citadel is 13th at 337 (+49).

 

Dice was the only one of the group to compete in the event last season, when the Mountaineers finished 12th of 12 teams.

 

Sunday's final round begins with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. as Xu looks to become ASU's first tournament champion since 2001.

 

 

 

 

Furman Struggles In Second Round At Tiger/Wave Golf Classic

 

New Orleans, La. -- The Furman women’s golf team fell to 20th place after shooting a second round 334 on Saturday at the Tiger/Wave Golf Classic at the par-72 English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, La.

 

Playing in windy conditions that included gusts of more than 30 m.p.h., junior Stefanie Kenoyer led the Paladins with a five-over 77 to hold a share of 27th place.  Kenoyer was the only Furman players to break 80.

 

Cydney Clanton (73-71=144) of Auburn and Megan McChrystal (72-72=144) of LSU are tied for the individual lead entering the final round in the 54-hole tournament.  Auburn and LSU are also tied for the team lead at 25-over par.  TCU is two strokes back in third place with first round leaders Alabama and Virginia rounding out the top five.

 

The Tiger/Wave Classic field features 16 of the top 50 teams in the country.

 

Final round play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning with a shotgun start.

Elon Tied for 10th at Low Country Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Western Carolina fired a +16 score of 304 in Saturday's first round of the Low Country Intercollegiate to lead the 14-team field after day one.  The Elon Phoenix women's golf team shot a 329 and is tied for 10th with one round to play.
 
Diana Davis was Elon's top performer, shooting an 81 to sit in a 29th-place tie with one round in the books.  Virginia Mayer is one stroke back in a tie for 38th.
 
Kelsey Johnson and Lauren Lebak each carded a first round score of 83 and are tied for 44th.  Rounding out Elon's field was Tara McFadden who sits in a tie for 54th after shooting an 85 on Saturday.  The field is made up of 75 participants.
 
Four players carded a 74 to sit atop the leaderboard ? Yue Xu of Appalachian State, Natalie Wille of Augusta State, Blaire Minter of Western Carolina and Jillian Fraccola of Richmond.
 
Augusta State, Jacksonville and James Madison are all tied for second, five strokes back of Western Carolina.  Richmond's round of 315 has the Spiders sitting fifth.
 
Elon is tied with Radford in 10th place.  The Phoenix currently leads Bucknell (333), The Citadel (337) and Gardner-Webb (352).
 
The final round of the Low Country Intercollegiate will be played on Sunday.
 

 

 

Cougars 17th at Tiger/Wave Golf Classic

New Orleans, La. - Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) braved gusty wind conditions and fired a 76 to tie for 21st and lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to 17th after the second round of the Tiger/Wave Golf Classic being held Mar. 12-14 at the English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans, La.  #2-Ranked Auburn and #20 LSU lead the tournament with a two-round total of 601 each.  #27 TCU is two strokes back in third.  The Cougars finished 36 holes with a 631, just seven strokes out of the top 10.

Weather conditions in the second round were windy with gusts reaching upwards of 30 mph.  Scores today averaged 80.75.

Auburn's Cydney Clanton and LSU's Megan McChrystal are tied for first for individual medalist honors with a 144 each.

Following Rapp, who totaled a 153 in two rounds, was Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) who tied for 40th with a 156.  Ainhoa Nogales shot a 161 to tie for 74th and tied for 100th was Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) with her 165.  Katharina Boehm (Poing, Germany) was 121st with a 175.

The third and final round is a shotgun format and begins at 8:30 a.m.
