College of Charleston 6, Chattanooga 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - College of Charleston women's tennis captured its second straight conference win with a 6-1 victory over Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Center.
One day after snapping Samford's five-game win streak, the Cougars (5-4, 2-0 SoCon) handed the Lady Mocs (2-4, 0-1 SoCon) their first loss at home. Charleston swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars shuffled partners as junior Kinsey Casey paired up with Emma Hayman for the first time at the No. 1 spot. The duo earned an 8-3 win over Emily Hangstefer and Shaina Singh.
Senior Laura Borza moved up one spot to pair with Anna Lee Evans as the pair took down Jenna Nurik and Grace Robinette, 8-2. Sophomore Caroline Newman and freshman Irene Viana moved to 4-3 as the third doubles team, defeating their opponents 8-0 at the No. 3 spot.
CofC won singles matches from the second through the sixth spots. Casey won her first match at the No. 2 spot with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hangstefer. Viana and Borza also jumped up to the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, to earn wins at their new positions. After claiming the first set with a 6-1 victory, Borza dropped the second set to Beata Knizat of Chattanooga, 6-3. She rebounded to beat her opponent with a decisive 6-0 mark in the third set.
Newman continued to perform well as the fourth seed, boosting her season record to 4-1 from that position after winning her match 7-5, 6-1. Evans picked up her second singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Lady Mocs' Jennifer Taylor.
UNC Greensboro 6, Longwood 1
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro cruised through five wins in singles play to defeat Longwood, 6-1, in nonconference women's tennis Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans raised their spring dual record to 3-1 on the year. Alex Whitehead, playing ahead in the lineup due to an injury to Lucy Dougherty, cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win over Zsofia Jakab at No. 1 singles to lead the way. Whitehead also teamed up with Stephanie Macfarlane for an easy doubles win over Jakab and Allison Shulman, 8-2.
Valerie Behr, Anettie Rios and Jessica Eblen also won in straight sets, while Macfarlane won her match by retirement.
The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they host a rescheduled match against East Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
