SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State's Donald Sims has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games February 2-8 the league office announced Tuesday (Feb. 9). Sims averaged 22.5 points and shot 50 percent from the field last week as the Mountaineers picked up road wins over Western Carolina (89-77) and UNC Greensboro (75-69). The player of the week is selected by the conference office.
Sims opened the week with 19 second-half points at Western Carolina. He finished the game with 29 points as the Mountaineers earned a season sweep over the Catamounts. Sims led ASU with 16 points at UNC Greensboro Monday night as the Mountaineers moved into first place in the North Division. The Gaffney, S.C., native connected on 12-of-24 field goal attempts for the week, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. Sims added six rebounds, three assists and three steals over the two games last week.
The junior guard is second in the conference in scoring with 19.2 points per game. He leads the nation in free throw shooting, having connected on 95 percent of his attempts from the charity stripe. Sims leads the league with 3.0 made three-pointers per game and is 12th in the conference in field goal percentage (.463). He joins College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock and Wofford's Noah Dahlman as the only two-time winners of the weekly award this season.
Appalachian State (14-10, 8-4 SoCon) will host Davidson Thursday night.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock, The Citadel's Zach Urbanus, Davidson's JP Kuhlman, Elon's TJ Douglas, Georgia Southern's Colby Wohlleb, and Wofford's Jamar Diggs.
