SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Citadel freshman Micah Wessinger and College of Charleston's Jelain McArthur have been honored as the Southern Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for all meets January 29-30. The selections are made by the league's track & field coaches.
Wessinger, a native of Chester, S.C., set a new school record in the 1,000m and finished third at the Dick Taylor Carolina Classic. Her time of 2:58.95 was 12 seconds faster than the previous mark.
McArthur, a freshman from Laurens, S.C., set new school records in both the long and triple jumps at the Clemson Games. She took first place in the triple jump with a leap of 39-1.75 and third in the long jump with a mark of 18-1.75. McArthur also ran a 9.17 in the hurdles to qualify for the finals.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday when they compete at the Christopher Newport Classic in Newport News, Va. The Cougars travel to the UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., on February 12.
Other top track performers included:
Appalachian State's Ashley McKiver, a senior from High Point, N.C, who won the 60m at the Liberty Open with a season-best time of 7.75. She also finished second in the 200m with a time of 25.76.
Davidson's Heather Conarroe, a junior from Greenwich, Conn., who won the 5K at the Liberty Open with a personal best time of 18:12.23.
Western Carolina's Olivia Jacobs, a freshman from Kannapolis, N.C., who finished second in the 3K at the Clemson Games. Her time of 10:22.40 improved upon her personal best by 34 seconds.
Other top field performers included:
The Citadel's Monique Edwards, a graduate student from Kingston, Jamaica, who finished fourth in the 20-pound weight at the Dick Taylor Carolina Classic. Her throw of 52-10.75 was a personal best and the second-longest throw in school history.
Elon's Veronica Day, a junior from Vienna, Va., won the long jump at the Liberty Open with a leap of 18-2.5. She also took second in the triple jump with a distance of 38-2.25, which broke the school record.
Western Carolina's Deirdra Morrison, a sophomore from Wilkesboro, N.C., who finished second in the 20-pound weight at the Clemson Games with a personal-best distance of 50-8.5. She also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 38-8.25, which was a season best.
