SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Matt Evans, a senior on the Western Carolina men's track & field team, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for February 3.
The Old Fort, N.C., native is majoring in physical education and has a 3.5 GPA.
He set the school record in the heptathlon with a score of 5,034 points and went on to finish second in the event at the Clemson Games.
Evans earned first place finishes in the high jump, with a mark of 2.08m, and the shot put, with a distance of 13.47m. He also took second in the long jump and third in the pole vault.
The previous record was 4,776 points, set by Evans at the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Other nominees included College of Charleston women's tennis player Caroline Newman and Georgia Southern women's basketball player Krista Tate.
