Davidson Sets SoCon Record to Highlight Sunday Baseball

Davidson 29 Mount St. Mary’s 7

Davidson 11, Presbyterian 5

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats extended their winning streak to six games with a sweep of a double-header Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. Behind a 17-run first inning, the Wildcats defeated Mount St. Mary's, 29-7, in the opening game and downed Presbyterian, 11-5, in the nightcap.

Davidson improves to 6-2 after winning all four of its games this weekend. The Wildcats exploded for a school-record 17 runs in the opening frame of the first game. The previous all-time best was 14 runs in an inning, also against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 17, 2001 in the second inning. Davidson was just a run off the all-time runs record (30 against N.C. A&T on March 17, 1992), but tied the record for hits in an inning (9) and hit batsmen in a game (8).

The Wildcats batted around twice in the opening frame, with the top three Davidson batters each getting three at-bats. Davidson took an 8-0 lead and chased starter Vincent Molesky (0-1) before he recorded an out as junior right fielder Sam Payne (single), sophomore second baseman James Cerbie (walk), sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire (walk), junior first baseman Danny Weiss (two-RBI single), junior designated hitter Will General (error), freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (three-RBI triple), sophomore catcher Seth Freeman (RBI-single) and sophomore left fielder Jake Berman (single) all scored.

Mountaineer reliever Colin Stuver surrendered an RBI-double to freshman Michael Zeblo before finally striking out Payne for the first out of the inning. Cerbie was hit by a pitch in his second at-bat of the frame, and Gadaire cleared the bases with a triple into the gap in right center to push Davidson's lead to 11-0. Weiss was hit by a pitch, and General drove in Gadaire with a double into left in the next at-bat. Barna was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Berman picked up an RBI by becoming the second straight hit batsman. Zeblo reached on an error by the third baseman Joe Kavanagh, allowing Barna and General to score, and Payne was the fifth Wildcat to get hit with a pitch to load the bases for Cerbie, who drove in the 'Cats' final runs with a three-RBI double into center field. Reliever Peter DeCandia took over and got Gadaire to fly out in his third at-bat to end the record-breaking frame.

With plenty of run support, sophomore Ryan Overcash earned his second win of the season, allowing just three runs on five hits and striking out five in five innings. With 23 total hits in the contest, every Davidson starter finished with at least a pair of hits, led by a three-hit game from lead off hitter Payne, who scored three runs and drove in a pair. Cerbie and Gadaire each drove in four runs on two hits, while Barna finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

The nightcap was much more routine, with the Wildcats outscoring the Presbyterian Blue Hose 7-1 over the final five and a half innings to clinch the 11-5 win. Davidson scored a pair of runs to open the contest as Weiss and then General drove in a run, but the Blue Hose took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the second and another in the third.

General doubled in a pair of runs, as Gadaire (single) and Weiss (walk) scored in the third to knot the score, and Payne's two-run home run in the fourth gave Davidson a 6-4 advantage. After junior Mike Frongello worked a no-hit fifth, Barna's first collegiate round-tripper in the home-half gave Davidson an 8-4 lead. Frongello (2-0) allowed just one run (in the sixth on an RBI base hit by Gabe Grammer) in three innings of relief to earn his second win of the weekend.

Davidson added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, as Zeblo's hit his first collegiate home run and Weiss drove in two more on his second hit of the game for the final 11-5 margin.

Gadaire (3-for-5) and General (3-for-4, 3 RBI) each finished with three hits to lead the Wildcats in the nightcap, while Weiss also drove in three runs.

Davidson will travel to Auburn for a pair of midweek games before returning to Wilson Field to host Bryant and UNC Asheville next weekend. The Wildcats face Auburn Tuesday at 3 CST and Wednesday at 6:30 CST.

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel mashed five home runs on Sunday afternoon at Riley Park, including three in the first inning, in a 15-4 drubbing of Radford.

The Bulldogs (5-1) swept the Charleston Crab House Shootout and are off to their best start since 1990, when they also started off the year 5-1. It didn't take long for The Citadel to move ahead on Sunday as they posted seven runs in the first inning, powered by three two-run homers.

Every Bulldog starter notched a hit on Sunday as the Cadets pounded out 20 of them. Brad Felder, Kyle Jordan and William Ladd all hit two-run homers in the first, coupled with an RBI double by Bryan Altman that knocked Radford starter Shane Pysh out of the game after only 0.1 innings pitched. The right-hander was charged with five hits and six earned runs.

In the seventh inning, the Bulldogs would get three more as Ladd scored on an RBI single by Orvin, followed by Felder's second two-run homer of the game that put the Bulldogs up 15-4. Ladd went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI while Orvin finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored and was hit by a pitch.

"We were pleased offensively that we swung the bats better and guys are starting to find their rhythm a little bit hopefully," said head coach Fred Jordan. "Michael Clevinger pitched well today, better than a week ago and he will continue to develop for us. We have pitched consistently, we have made the routine play and we have executed under pressure. When you do those things, a lot of times you are going to be successful. We are pleased to be 5-1, but have a tough road trip at Hawaii coming up, they are a very good ballclub and hopefully we can continue to build off what we have done in these first two tournaments."

Clevinger picked up his first collegiate win in his second start as he went 5.0 innings, giving up six hits, three runs and two walks to go along with seven punch-outs. Matt Reifsnider pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up one run, while striking out four. Austin Pritcher and Chris Boyce combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning, while TJ Clarkson saw his first action of the year in the ninth as he struck out two batters. Jeffrey Spillane made his collegiate debut as he earned the final out of the ball game on a groundout to third.

Radford was able to get on the board in the fourth inning when Carl Travers doubled in two to get the Highlanders (1-5) on the board. Brett Mollenhauer knocked in Matt Hillsinger in the fifth, while Mollenahuer reached on an error in the sixth that scored Tyren Rivers to round out the scoring for Radford.

The Bulldogs return to action next weekend as they head out west to take on Hawaii in a four-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 p.m. (ET) on Thursday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 8:35 p.m. (ET) and conclude Saturday at 5:05 p.m. (ET).

Appalachian State 13, Niagara 2

FOREST CITY, N.C. - Appalachian State University baseball moved to 6-0 for the first time in 19 years with a convincing 13-2 win over Niagara on the final day of the inaugural North-South Challenge on Sunday at McNair Field.

Appalachian (6-0) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by David Towarnicky (New Bern, N.C./New Bern) then opened the floodgates with a nine-run fifth to take an insurmountable 11-0 lead.

The Mountaineers sent 12 batters to the plate in the nine-run fifth. Each of the first nine ASU hitters in the inning scored and nine of the first 10 recorded base hits. Jeremy Dowdy's (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) two-run double and Jason Wallace's (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) three-run homer highlighted the fifth-inning onslaught.

In all, ASU banged out a season-best 15 hits while its 13 runs matched a season high also recorded versus Niagara on Friday. Towarnicky and Wes Hobson (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) paced the 15-hit attack with three apiece while Towarnicky and Wallace drove in three runs each.

On the mound, Mountaineer starter Ryan Arrowood (Rutherfordton, N.C./Central) tossed six shutout innings near his hometown to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the young season. Dating back to a loss in his first collegiate start over a year ago, Arrowood has won 15-straight decisions, including a 12-0 stint with the Coastal Plain League's Forest City Owls last summer. Arrowood has not allowed a run while striking out 16 and walking only two in 11 innings this season.

Sunday's performance on the mound was indicative of the pitching prowess that has ASU standing at 6-0 for the first time since 1991. Through six games, the Mountaineer pitching staff boasts a miniscule 1.83 ERA and .202 opposing batting average. The Apps have also been impressive at the plate, averaging over nine runs per game. Overall, Appalachian has outscored its opponents by a combined 56-12.

The Mountaineers close out a string of seven-straight games away from home to open the season when they travel to North Carolina A&T on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro.

STATESBORO, GA - Georgia Southern scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on through a late Holy Cross rally for a 13-10 win over the Crusaders on Sunday (Feb. 28) at J.I. Clements Stadium. For the second straight day, Holy Cross struck first with single runs in the first two innings, but GS erased that deficit quickly with its offensive output in the fourth.

Kevin Bowles (Statesboro, Ga.) went 3-for-3 and Victor Roache (Ypsilanti, Mich.) hit a two-run homer to pace the Eagles (3-4), who led 13-5 after six innings. After the Crusaders (0-2) battled back and had the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth, reliever Dexter Bobo (Cumming, Ga.) recorded the final out for Georgia Southern’s first save of the season.

The Eagles were out-hit 18-10, but drew 11 walks and were hit by two pitches. The Crusaders also committed four errors - although none of the miscues led to an unearned run.

Bowles was the only Georgia Southern player with more than one hit, while A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) and Roache each had two RBIs apiece.

Eagle starter Trent Franzago (1-0), a Bryon, Ga., native, pitched five innings for the win. The first of five Georgia Southern pitchers, he allowed five runs (all earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Michael Burruss (Marietta, Ga.) had an RBI double before Roache belted his second homer of the season, a line drive to left-center field with one man on that gave the Eagles a 13-5 advantage.

Holy Cross added two runs in the seventh and sliced the game to a three run margin in the next frame. Taking advantage of a Georgia Southern error that led to two unearned runs, the Crusaders added three runs in the eighth using Puentes and John Sills RBI singles to cut the score, 13-10. With runners on first and second, Georgia Southern third baseman Roman Grimaldi (Duluth, Ga.) made a diving stop and recorded the putout at first to end the inning and keep GS in the lead.

In the ninth, a pair of one-out singles put Holy Cross runners on first and second with one out. Reliever Andy Moye (Alpharetta, Ga.) got a strikeout before yielding to Bobo, who coaxed a fielder’s choice to Phillips at shortstop for the last out of the game.

Nebraska 5, Elon 3

HOUSTON, Texas -- For the second straight day a late Elon rally fell short.  On Sunday, the Phoenix headed to the ninth inning trailing the Nebraska Cornhuskers 5-1 before pushing across two runs in its final at bat and falling 5-3.  The Phoenix will return to North Carolina with a record of 4-3 while Nebraska is now 3-4.

Nebraska took the early lead when three consecutive two-out singles from Adam Bailey, Tyler Farst and Cade Thompson produced one run.

With one away in the bottom of the second, Cory Burleson singled up the middle and then headed to third on Bryan Peters' double down the left field line.  Burleson came home to score the second Cornhusker run on D.J. Belfonte's sacrifice fly to left.

The bottom of the fourth started with a walk to Josh Scheffert before a Kyle Bubak single to center put runners on the corners.  Nebraska loaded the bases when Bryan Peters was plunked by a pitch with one out.  A two-out single through the left side off the bat of Boomer Collins plated Scheffert and the Cornhuskers stretched their lead to 3-0.  Daniel Britt got out of the jam by fanning Bailey to end the inning.

Farst and Thompson started the Nebraska fifth with back-to-back singles before Scheffert greeted John Brebbia, the new Phoenix hurler, with a RBI single through the right side which left runners on the corners.  Elon did not allow another run in the frame though as Brebbia retired the next three hitters.

Seth Canipe led off Elon's half of the sixth with a walk and went to second when Justin Hilt was hit by a pitch with one away.  After a fielder's choice erased Hilt and left Canipe on third and Niko Fraser on first, Mike Melillo laced a double down the right field line to score Canipe with the first Phoenix run of the contest.  Following a pitching change, Neal Pritchard was hit by a pitch to load the bags.  After another change on the mound, pinch-hitter Alex Maruri flew out to right to end Elon's threat of a big inning.

After Phoenix pitchers had retired 10 straight Nebraska hitters, Burleson singled with one out in the ninth.  Peters then walked before Belfonte's single to right-center drove home Burleson to give the Cornhuskers a four-run cushion at 5-1.

Elon threatened in the ninth when Alex Swim was hit by a pitch and Canipe doubled down the left field line to put two aboard with one out.   Ben Scott was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Hilt who flared a single into shallow right-center to drive home Swim.  A Fraser ground out brought home Canipe and the Phoenix trailed by just two at 5-3 with two outs.  Mike Nesseth then fanned Melillo to end the game.

Britt (1-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings.  The Phoenix bullpen kept Elon in the game, allowing just one run on three hits in its 4.0 innings of work.

Tom Lemke (2-0) earned the win with a solid 5.2-inning outing.  He allowed just one run on four hits.

Melillo and Canipe each recorded two-hit games for Elon while Hilt, Fraser and Melillo each had one RBI.
