CLEMSON, S.C. - The Appalachian State men and Western Carolina women won the 2010 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The title was the seventh for the Mountaineer men since 2000. The Catamount women claimed their sixth championship in program history.
On the men's side, ASU edged WCU by two points, 209-207, in the final standings. The WCU women tallied 174.5 points followed by ASU with 122 points.
Friday began with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon.
Western Carolina senior Matt Evans won the men's heptathlon with 4,998 points. Despite not taking first place in any of the heptathlon events Friday, Evans did finish second in the 1000m run. That, along with his two top finishes Thursday helped him earn the men's heptathlon title.
Three-time defending heptathlon champion Matt Boruff, a senior from Appalachian State, finished first in the heptathlon 60m hurdles with a time of 8.56. Taking first place in the heptathlon pole vault was Samford freshman Brandon Bassett with a mark of 14-7.25 (4.45m).
In the women's pole vault, Appalachian State senior Julie Ward claimed her second consecutive victory in the event with a mark of 11-7.75 (3.55m).
Western Carolina freshman took the top spot in the men's 60m hurdles posting a time of 8.10. On the women's side, Samford senior Morgan Tyler won her second consecutive 60m hurdles event with a time of 8.69.
Patrick Morgan, a graduate student at Appalachian State, placed first in the men's mile with a time of 4:13.70. For the women, Samford junior Hillary Neal won her second consecutive mile run with a time of 4:49.52.
In the men's 60m dash, Western Carolina senior Dominique Young took the top spot with a time of 6.84. Appalachian State senior Ashley McKiver's time of 7.62 earned first place in the women's 60m dash.
Brunson Miller, a freshman at The Citadel, won the men's 400m dash with a time of 48.65. Western Carolina junior Jane't Carothers repeated as the women's 400m dash winner recording a time of 56.05.
In the men's 800m, Appalachian State senior Brandon Hudgins took first place with a time of 1:54.14. On the women's side Micah Wessinger, a freshman at The Citadel, won the 800m posting a time of 2:16.10.
Western Carolina senior Alex Dollard finished first in the men's triple jump with a leap of 46-10.75 (14.29m). Danielle Thorpe, a senior at Appalachian State, earned her second-straight victory in the women's triple jump, posting a distance of 40-9.5 (12.43m).
Claiming his second consecutive title in the weight throw, Appalachian State junior Malcolm Styers recorded a mark of 60-0 (18.54m). For the women, Monique Edwards, a senior at The Citadel, took the top spot in the weight throw with a toss of 53-3.75 (16.25m).
In the men's 200m dash, Western Carolina senior Dominique Young took first place with a time of 21.84. On the women's side, the Catamounts' Jane't Carothers earned her second win of the day with a time of 24.94 in the 200m.
Samford senior Cameron Bean picked up his second victory in a distance event, this time in the 5000m with a time of 14:29.12. Bean took first in the 3000m Thursday. Furman sophomore Chloe Kowalski took first in the 3000m posting a time of 17:39.20.
The championships concluded with the men's and women's 4x400m. Western Carolina swept the men's and women's sides for the fourth consecutive year. The men won with a time of 3:18.18 and were represented by Brandon Hairston, Dominique Young, Drew Tucker and Benny Davis. Competing for the women were Shalyn McMichael, Felicia Paulding, Felisha Garren and Jane't Carothers who recorded a time of 3:49.92.
The top three finishers in each event were named to the all-conference team.
