GREENVILLE, S.C. - Lana Mackey plated Katie Michaels with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to lift Furman to a 6-5 victory and doubleheader split with Oakland University on Thursday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium. The Golden Grizzlies scored an unearned run to top Furman 1-0 in game one.
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Furman's Stephanie Field reached base on a one-out walk and moved to second when Michaels reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Jessie Homesley's grounder to short skipped through the legs of the shortstop allowing Field to score from second to tie the game at 5-5. After Oakland intentionally walked Morgan Hughey, Mackey dribbled a bases loaded single out of the reach of the catcher and third baseman to score Michaels with the winning run.
Furman (2-3) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of Hughey's two-run blast to centerfield. The Paladins increased their lead to 4-0 on an RBI single by Homesley in the second, but Oakland plated five unearned runs in the top half of the third against Furman starter Kayla Suskauer.
Stephanie Mihaly (1-1) earned the win for Furman tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless relief while surrendering just two hits and fanning eight batters. Hughey and Homesley each batted in two runs while Field scored a pair of runs for the Paladins.
Oakland's (4-7) Marissa Everitt (0-2) allowed three earned runs, six total, on five hits in 6.1 innings to suffer the loss. Leah DiCristafaro went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI to pace the Grizzlies at the plate.
In game one, Brittany Doyle (3-3) tossed a complete-game, seven-hit shutout to down Furman 1-0. She struck out four batters without issuing a walk.
The Grizzlies plated an unearned run in the fifth inning on a pair of Furman errors for the only tally of the game. Kelsey Krych went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Oakland.
Morgan Hughey and Megan Schonhar each collected two hits for Furman. The Paladins lost despite Mackey's (1-1) career-high 15 strikeouts. The senior scattered five hits and did not allow an earned run while walking two.
Furman returns to action on March 2, when it travels to face the Charlotte 49ers. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
