CLEMSON, S.C. - At the conclusion of day one of the 2010 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Western Carolina leads on the men's side with 62 points, while Appalachian State is first for the women with 53 points.
Thursday began with the women's pentathlon and four men's heptathlon events.
Georgia Southern junior Lynndsey Hyter won her second consecutive women's pentathlon with 3,494 points after taking first place in two events, including the long jump and shot put. She also tied for the top spot in the high jump. Hyter posted leaps of 5-2.25 (1.58m) in the high jump and 18-3.25 (5.57m) in the long jump, while setting a mark of 34-0 (10.36m) in the shot put.
Western Carolina junior Carlyn Wright won the women's pentathlon 60m hurdles with a time of 8.89. Isabel Boersma, a sophomore from College of Charleston, tied for first in the high jump. Winning the 800m run was The Citadel freshman Kelsi Billings with a time of 2:30.10.
In the men's heptathlon, Samford sophomore Donald Cooper's time of 7.15 in the 60m dash took first place. His teammate, freshman Brandon Bassett finished first in the men's heptathlon long jump with a leap of 22-5.25 (6.84m). Western Carolina senior Matt Evans won the men's heptathlon shot put with a toss of 44-9.0 (13.64m) as well as the high jump with a leap of 6-9.0 (2.06m).
Evans currently leads the heptathlon with 2,901 points. Samford's Bo Ackerson-Gilroy is second with 2,814 points.
Samford senior Cameron Bean won the men's 3000m run with a time of 8:15.74, while Appalachian State freshman Trinity Foreman's mark of 10:09.73 took first place in the women's 3000m.
Western Carolina sophomore Deirdra Morrison won the women's shot put with a toss of 42-7.0 (12.98m).
Claiming his second-straight men's shot put title, Appalachian State junior Malcolm Styers recorded a toss of 53-5.5 (16.29m).
The Catamounts' Matt Evans earned another victory on the day, this time in the high jump, posting a leap of 6-10.25 (2.09m). It marked his second consecutive award and third in his career in the event. On the women's side, Emily Smith, a sophomore at College of Charleston took first place with a leap of 5-8.0 (1.73m).
Kevin Hardy, a sophomore at The Citadel, finished first in the men's long jump with a leap of 23-8.75 (7.23m). Elon junior Veronica Day won the women's long jump with a mark of 18-9.25 (5.72m).
Samford sophomore Michael Seaman took top honors in the pole vault, setting a new league record with a mark of 16-7.5 (5.07m).
Appalachian State won the men's distance medley relay with a time of 10:09.92. Competing for the Mountaineers were Bud Galloway, Alex Taylor, Nick O'Keefe and Josh Houser.
Samford took the top spot in the women's distance relay posting a time of 11:24.73. Jessica Van Ausdall, Ashley Bridenbaugh, Lauren D'Alessio and Hillary Neal ran for the Bulldogs. The officials ended the race one lap short, so the teams only ran 3800 meters.
Preliminary trials were also held Thursday in the men's and women's 60, 200, 400 and 800m dash, as well as the 60m hurdles.
Western Carolina freshman Cordell Livingston qualified first and set a new SoCon record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.06. The Catamounts' Nicole Okolo, a junior, qualified first on the women's side with a time of 8.70.
Qualifying first in the men's 60m dash was Western Carolina senior Dominique Young with a time of 6.88. For the women, Appalachian State senior Ashley McKiver took first in the preliminaries with a time of 7.61.
The Citadel freshman Brunson Miller qualified first in the men's 400m dash with a time of 49.22. Qualifying first on the women's side was Western Carolina junior Jane't Carothers with a time of 55.71.
In the men's 800m run, Western Carolina junior Drew Tucker qualified first with a time of 1:54.11. Chattanooga senior Anneli Uys took first in the women's preliminaries with a time of 2:13.21.
WCU's Dominique Young earned his second top spot in the preliminaries, this time in the 200m dash, posting a time of 21.93. His teammate Jane't Carothers also picked up her second top qualifying finish with a time of 24.83 in the event.
Friday's events begin at 9:15 a.m. with the completion of the men's heptathlon including the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run.
