SAMFORD WOMEN’S GOLF TAKES THIRD PLACE AT JU CLASSIC

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Samford University women’s golf team used outstanding performances from senior Katelyn Stanier and true freshman Anna Heim on Tuesday to earn a third-place finish at the 2010 Jacksonville University Classic held at the Hidden Hills Country Club.
Stanier, the Bulldogs’ native of Newnan, Ga., finished the two-day competition in a tie for 10th place. She fired a 77 on Tuesday en route to a 36-hole score of 155. Heim, Samford’s talented newcomer from Lafayette, La., posted her second straight 78 and concluded the tournament with a final score of 156. She finished the event ranked 12th in the individual standings.
As a team, Samford carded a 36-hole score of 631 (312-319) to finish third in the tournament. Stetson University defended its championship title with a final score of 610 (305-305), while Cincinnati finished second at 625 (310-315).
Daytona State College’s Mitsuki Katahira won the individual title with an even-par 144 (73-71).
Samford’s Sara Hunt finished tied for 16th place in the individual standings Tuesday. The Bulldogs’ native of Columbia, Tenn., carded a second-round score of 81 to finish with a 36-hole mark of 158. Samford’s Heather Arnold concluded the 2010 JU Classic with a final score of 162 (79-83), while Sarah Butts rounded out the event with a 36-hole total of 164 (81-83).
The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in action Monday as the Bulldogs head to Mobile, Ala., for the annual South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invite to be held at the Azalea City Golf Course.
Whittaker Leads Cougars to Ninth at Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic
Kiawah Island, S.C. ? Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) used four birdies and nine pars to fire a 69 in the third round and lead the College of Charleston women’s golf team to ninth at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic held Feb. 21-23 at Cougar and Oak Points on Kiawah Island, S.C. Miami, which started the day tied for seventh, shot a 289 to finish with an 892 and the one-stroke win over Minnesota. The Cougars, who also shot a 289 in the third round, jumped three spots to finish with a 902, just five strokes from the top five.
East Tennessee State’s Nina Muehle and Oral Roberts’ Crystal Reeves each shot a 213 in 54 holes to win individual medalist honors. Middle Tennessee State’s Morgan Hale finished third, just two strokes back.
Whittaker finished the tournament with a 220 for her ninth-place tie, while Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) tied for 18th with a 224 each. Rapp carded four birdies on the day, while Koechli added three. Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) tied for 75th with a 235 and Kathy Boehm (Pong, Germany) finished 172nd with her 78 on the day. Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) competed as an individual and shot a 79 today to end with a 248 and a tie for 134th.
Charleston next travels to Orlando, Fla., for the UCF Intercollegiate March 1-2.

McFadden Places in Tie for Fifth; Elon 17th
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Tara McFadden finished the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in a tie for fifth place in a field of 172 golfers after a three-round score of 219 (74-71-74). The Phoenix ended the tournament in 17th place in the 33-team field with a team score of 925 (304-318-303).
McFadden carded Elon's top round during all three days of the event. Lauren Lebak posted her top round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 75 to finish in a tie for 35th with a total score of 228 (76-77-75).
Kelsey Johnson was one of three Phoenix golfers to post a final-round 77. She placed in a tie for 81st overall with a 237 (77-83-77). Dani Mullin also fired a 77 and posted a 242 (77-88-77). Shannon Prunty's final-round 77 was her lowest of the tournament. Prunty totaled a 246 (82-87-77) to tie for 127th.

Miami took home the team title with a one-stroke victory over Minnesota. Miami carded a 289 on the final day to finish at 892. Augusta State (895) was third while Oral Roberts and East Carolina tied for fourth with an 897.

Catamount Women’s Golf Finishes 11th at Spring-Opening Kiawah Island Classic
Senior Desiree Karlsson paces WCU with 15th-place finish
Kiawah Island, S.C. ? Desiree Karlsson fired a one-under 71 on Tuesday in the final round of the spring season-opening Kiawah Island Classic at the Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Courses. Western Carolina finished 11th overall in the 33 team field after carding a three-day total of 912.
Junior Josefine Sundh slipped into a tie for 30th in the final standings after a final round 82, while Malin Jansson placed tied for 57th. Karlsson finished with 38 pars over the three-round tournament while Sundh finished with 10 birdies, tied for sixth overall.
Blaire Minter finished tied for 69th and Rachel Nelson was tied for 105th to round out WCU’s scorers.
Miami (Fla.) posted a final round score of 289 to finish at 892 to edge Minnesota by a stroke, 893, in the final team standings. First round leader Augusta State (895) finished third, three strokes in arrears, while Oral Roberts and East Carolina finished tied for fourth at 897.
East Tennessee State’s Nina Muehl and Crystal Reeves of Oral Roberts finished tied for the individual crown, each shooting a three-under 213 over the 54-hole event.

The Citadel Golf Finishes 32nd in Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Golf team wrapped up the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in 32nd place on Tuesday, finishing the three-day event ahead of USC Upstate with a team score of 1,057 (+193).
Leading the Bulldogs was sophomore Alanna-Jean Keith who tied for 131st place with a three-round total of 247 (+31) after shooting a team low of 81 in the first two rounds, followed by an 85 on Tuesday. Sophomore Bree Baumgartner shot a 260 after opening the first round with an 81 and struggling in the second with a 93. She improved seven strokes in the third, finishing the final round with an 86 for second among the Bulldog golfers. Christine Clark (272), Sheri Rockefeller (278) and Kate Hardina (326) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
The University of Miami claimed the tournament title with a combined score of 892 (+28), just one stroke ahead of University of Minnesota who finished second with an 893. Augusta State rounded out the top three with an 895 score. The tournament host College of Charleston finished ninth overall with a team score of 902 (+38), while SoCon opponent Elon came in 17th with a score of 925 (+61).
East Tennessee State's Nina Muehl and Oral Roberts' Crystal Reeves shared the individual title, firing three under par for a three-round total of 213 (-3). Morgan Hale, of Middle Tennessee State, finished third with 215 (-1). Elon's Tara McFadden led all SoCon golfers with a 219 (+3) to tie for fifth place overall, while College of Charleston golfer Leigh Whittaker finished tied for ninth with a three-day total of 220 (+4).
