WCU Women’s Golf Slips into Tie for Fifth; Sundh Back to Three-Way Tie for Sixth at Kiawah Island Classic
Sundh follows up her opening round three-under 69 with four-over 76 on Monday
Kiawah Island, S.C. ? Western Carolina slipped two spots in the overall standings after Monday’s second round, following up its opening round 293 with a 309 on the second 18 holes to slide into a tie for fifth at the Kiawah Island Classic at the Cougar and Oak Point Golf Courses.
Junior Josefine Sundh, who led WCU after the opening 18 holes in second place, slipped into a three-way sixth after a four-over 76 for a two-day total of 145. Sundh ranks tied for second with eight birdies, including five on the opening day.
Malin Jansson carded 79 on Monday to stand tied for 27th at 151, followed by Desiree Karlsson who posted her second-consecutive round of four-over, 76, to advance into a tie for 30th one-stroke back at 152. Blaire Minter enters Tuesday’s final round tied for 47th at 154, while Rachel Nelson is tied for 94th at 160 through two rounds.
The Oak Point Course in which WCU played on Monday continues to be the tougher of the two being used in competition in the tournament. Oak Point has an average stroke average of 80.7, while Cougar Point is averaging 79.12 per round.
First-round leading Augusta State shot just 307 on Monday to see its six-stroke lead trimmed to four by a two-way tie for second between East Carolina and East Tennessee State. Augusta State is 15 over par at 591, while ECU and ETSU are four strokes back at 595. Minnesota is nine strokes in arrears in fourth, followed by the two-way tie between WCU and Middle Tennessee State with identical scores of 602, 11 strokes off the pace.
Jansson continues to rank tied for the tournament lead with 28 pars through the first 36 holes, while Karlsson has scored 25 pars through the first two rounds.
The third and final round will begin Tuesday morning at 9:00 am with a shotgun start. The Catamounts will be spread over the fourth through seventh holes on the Cougar Point course in which the squad recorded a five-over, 293, as a team in Sunday’s opening round.
Cougars 12th after Second Round of Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
Kiawah Island, S.C. - Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) recorded three birdies and 10 pars, shooting a 75, to lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to 12th after the second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic being held at Cougar and Oak Point in Kiawah Island, S.C. Augusta State carded a 307 today and held on to a four-stroke lead over East Tennessee State and East Carolina, who are both tied for second. The Cougars shot a 613 and are just out of the top 10 by six strokes.
Crystal Reeves, from Oral Roberts, shot a 68 today and a 72 in the first round and leads the tournament with a four-under 140. East Tennessee State's Nina Muehl and Sinead O'Sullivan are tied for second with a 142 each.
The Cougars are among the top 20 teams and will play the third and final round at Cougar Point. Akron fired a 634 and just missed the cut by one stroke. The Zips will lead the remaining 13 teams at Oak Point competing for the Flight Championship.
Following Rapp with her 150 and her tie for 22nd was Leigh Whitaker (Baden-Baden, Germany), who had four birdies on the day to shoot a 74 today. She totaled a 151 to move to a tie for 27th. Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) who fired another 76 to total a 152, tied for 30th. Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) shot an 81 to finish the day with a 161 and tied for 107th. Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) competed for the Cougars as an individual and tied for 144th with a 169.
Charleston tees off at Cougar Point from holes eight, nine, 10 and 11 in a shotgun format beginning at 9 a.m. in third round action Tuesday.

McFadden Shoots One-Under, Elon Slips to 16th
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Despite a one-under 71 from Tara McFadden, the Elon women's golf team dropped to 16th place following the second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic hosted by Southern Conference rival College of Charleston. Augusta State leads the tournament with a two-day score of 591 (284-307) while the Phoenix has shot a 622 (304-318).
McFadden's two-round total of 145 (74-71) has her sitting in tie for seventh place individually with one round to go. Sitting in a tie for 42nd place after shooting a 77 on day two is Lauren Lebak who carded a 76 on day one.
The rest of the Phoenix field struggled during round two. Kelsey Johnson has posted a two-round total of 160 (77-83) and sits in a tie for 94th. Dani Mullin's 165 (77-88) puts her in a 127th-place tie while Shannon Prunty's 169 (82-87) puts her in a tie for 144th in the field of 172 golfers.
Leading the individual field is Crystal Reeves of Oral Roberts who has shot a 140 (72-68). She is two strokes ahead of East Tennessee State's duo of Nina Muehl and Sinead O'Sullivan.
The rest of the top-four teams on the leaderboard are 49th-rated East Tennessee State (296-299--595), East Carolina (290-305--595) and Minnesota (303-297--600). Western Carolina (293-309--602) and Middle Tennessee State (303-299--602) are tied for fifth.
Elon currently sits ahead of foes such as William & Mary (17th; 308-316--624), Richmond (25th; 326-317--643), Winthrop (T28th; 327-327--654) and The Citadel (32nd; 344-360--704) in the 33-team field.
The third and final round is scheduled to be played on Tuesday.
